Olana is the most important artist’s home,studio and designed landscape in theUnited States. Frederic Church designedOlana as a holistic environment integratinghis advanced ideas about art, architecture,landscape design, and environmentalconservation. Olana’s 250-acre artist-designed landscape with a Persian-inspiredhouse at its summit embraces unrivaledpanoramic views of the Hudson Valley andCatskill Mountains and welcomes morethan 170,000 visitors annually.

The Olana Partnership, a private not-for-profit education corporation, workscooperatively with the New York StateOffice of Parks, Recreation and HistoricPreservation to support the conservationand interpretation of Olana State HistoricSite. Funds raised at the 2016 Gala willsupport our mission to inspire the public by creating the most widely recognizedartist’s home and studio in the world,vibrant with the activity of students, visitorsand scholars.

Frederic Edwin Church (1826–1900),Olana’s visionary creator, was thepreeminent American artist of the mid-19th century. In 2000, the centenary ofChurch’s death, The Olana Partnershipestablished the Frederic Church Award torecognize outstanding accomplishment inAmerican art, culture, landscape design and environmental conservation.

This year’s Gala will mark the 50thAnniversary of the preservation of Olana, aflagship New York Historic Site and majoreconomic engine for the Hudson Valley andCapital Region. In 1966, Olana facedimminent destruction. Local citizens andnational champions of culture andpreservation, including Jacqueline KennedyOnassis and Jimmy Biddle, rallied to thecause, raising awareness and substantialfunds. Public intervention was needed toensure Olana’s future, and GovernorRockefeller’s leadership led to the passingof the Lane-Newcombe Bill to acquireOlana as a New York State Historic Site.The Governor signed the bill on the stepsof the Main House at Olana on June 27,1966. A potent public-private partnershipwas born, and Olana was saved.
