USS ENTERPRISE, At sea - Sailors aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65) packed into the officer and chief petty officer barber shop to take part in the late-night grand opening of the ship’s brand-new, female-only WAVES Hair Cuttery March 28. The opening featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony with Capt. Dee L. Mewbourne, Enterprise’s commanding officer, which was immediately followed by doing exactly what’s supposed to happen there: a whole lot of hair cutting. The new salon, named after the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service), a World War II-era division of the U.S. Navy that consisted entirely of women, will offer all Enterprise females the opportunity to receive salon-quality hairstyling from certified cosmetologists while on deployment. The idea for a women’s hair salon began as a call-in question during “411,” the live ship-wide television broadcast featuring the commanders of Enterprise Strike Group, Enterprise and Carrier Air Wing One. The idea was immediately brought to the attention of Chief Ship’s Serviceman Krista A. Medina, the leading chief petty officer of Enterprise Supply

department’s S-3 division, which is in charge of retail operations. Medina, who said she routinely gave haircuts to fellow female Sailors in less than ideal haircutting environments, jumped at the opportunity to provide Big ‘E’ females with a luxury most deployed women are forced to live without. “As soon as I heard about the WAVES idea I thought it was a perfect,” said Medina. “We started planning it out about 45 days ago and took the time to make sure we found all of the right haircut accessories and the right personnel to do the job. This will be a great place for women to come relax and know their hair is in great hands.” The “great hands” Medina is referring to belong to Electrician’s Mate Fireman Kylie R. Pena, Ship’s

Serviceman Seaman Latoya Wilcox and Ship’s Serviceman 3rd Class Shiva Augustus, who are all volunteering their time and talents to provide quality haircuts after their normal 12-hour work days come to an end. The three volunteer Sailors have a combined 11 years of cosmetology experience and all aspire to work in the cosmetology field again after their naval careers are over. “I think this is a really cool thing to do,” said Pena, who received her cosmetology license after graduating high school. “It’s totally out of the ordinary compared to what I normally do during the day and will give me great experience so I can continue with cosmetology while still in the Navy.” “It feels good to help boost the ship’s morale while

doing something you enjoy,” said Wilcox, who practiced cosmetology for six years prior to joining the Navy. The first official haircut appointment in the new salon belonged to Lt. j.g. Tennille M. Hairston, the ship’s secretary. “I had a very pleasant time,” said Hairston. “It was refreshing to have my hair styled again, and the stylists were very friendly and professional. I would definitely recommend their services to anyone, and I know I’ll be back myself.” “There were many volunteers that put in a great deal of hard work to ensure we had the proper tools and training to open WAVES Hair Cuttery,” said Cmdr. Patrick O’Connor, Enterprise’s supply officer. “We are all very excited about the opportunity to now serve the needs of a significant and important customer base on board Big ‘E.’ I hope that all our female shipmates will come on by and give our great cosmetologists a chance to brighten their day.”WAVES Hair Cuttery will operate Monday through Friday from 2100 to 0100 in the officer and chief petty officer barber shop located at 02-171-2-Q. WAVES haircuts will be scheduled in hour-long appointment blocks only and appointments can be made by contacting Medina by e-mail or at j-dial 7559.

ET2 Lindgren, a reactor controls technician assigned to Reactor’s RC division, joined the Navy four years ago while looking for a new life. To Lindgren, the most rewarding aspect of his job is the satisfaction he gets from performing maintenance on RC equipment and “making things work the way they are supposed to.” Lindgren aspires to one day finish his college degree and enjoys hunting and fishing during his free time.

PR3 Reeves, assigned to the “Knighthawks” of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 136, has been in the Navy for one year and nine months. To Reeves, the most rewarding aspect of his job is ensuring that pilots’ gear is safe and in good working condition. Reeves plans to apply for the Blue to Green program so he can one day be a Ranger with the Army’s special forces. During his spare time, Reeves enjoys playing soccer, football and hanging out with his friends.
