cover the costs associated with the DOROTHY WEBER Y.E.S. Awards. This pre-Valentine’s Day event depends upon to elements: donations of tempting homemade and commercially prepared dessert items and bidders who will give no quarter in their quest to be successful in capturing those chewy chocolate chip cookies or Key lime pie!

Sign up to donate one or more items to be auctioned off during the silent auction conducted during our 8 February Friday meeting. Then invite a friend to join you for lunch that day and suggest that they bid so as not to go home empty handed.

During the silent auction we will be hearing about plans for a special recognition as our club approaches 100 years of community service.

FRIDAY 15 FEBRUARY 2019It will be our pleasure to welcome Knoxville Opera’s Executive and Artistic Director BRIAN SALESKY for lunch on Friday 15 February 2019. Believe it or not, the Rossini Festival is right around the corner. On April 13, 2019 downtown Knoxville will be transformed into a European-style pedestrian street mall appropriate for the entire family as the 18th annual festival takes center stage. Invite a friend to join you and the Maestro for lunch and an update about performing arts in general and the Knoxville Opera in particular.

OPTIMIST CLUB OF HEAVEN – RANDALL SUMNERWe just learned that RANDALL SUMNER transferred his membership from our club to the Optimist Club of Heaven on 15 January 2019. Randall joined this club in March of 1964 and was an active member. He served as President in 1974 and was named Optimist of the Year in 1977. He held Life Membership in Optimist International since 1983. After relocating to Florida RANDALL visited the club on a couple of occasions when we invited all Past Presidents to come to a meeting. He encouraged many of the newer Optimists in the club to up their game and increase their involvement. It was RANDALL who convinced the Board of Directors to retire dinner badges when a member transferred to the Optimist Club of Heaven. Identified as “Rich One” by his brother-in-law GLEN HAROLD MAYS who conversely called himself “Poor One”, RANDALL always supported our club’s activities. Counted among members he sponsored is HELEN HEWITT. Could it be that RANDALL is once again neighbors with PAT SUMMITT?

PICS CAROLYN BLIND served as Chairman of the Day last Friday. She introduced ANNETTE BRUN, Director of Engagement and Estate Management for Knox Heritage, seen here receiving a copy of The Optimist Creed from President CHRIS COX.

KELLY PRATT thanks you for dropping pesky pennies, nuisance nickels etc.… into the collection jars to benefit the Optimist International fight against Childhood Cancer.

ALEX FELDT, guest of KELLY PRATT is looking for volunteers. As one of the largest outreach programs of its kind in the country, The Ethics Bowl seeks to foster critical thinking and moral reasoning skills in local high school students. In addition to contributing to students’ academic and career performance, the program helps to instill key intellectual and civic virtues among future leaders of our democracy. At the event, students analyze a series of wide-ranging ethical issues and then present their ideas to judges and other teams in a fun and friendly atmosphere. See information in this issue and volunteer!

DAN GREEN is working on a trip to Keeneland Racecourse in Lexington, Kentucky. Contact DAN if you are interested in this day trip to Keeneland, an internationally renowned racecourse and the Thoroughbred industry's leading auction house.

TO be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.

TO talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet.

TO make all your friends feel that there is something in them.

TO look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.

TO think only of the best, to work only for the best and to expect only the best.

TO be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.

TO forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.

TO wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile.

TO give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others.

TO be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.

2019 Tennessee High School Ethics Bowl CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

We are pleased to announce a great opportunity for you to be involved with the tenth annual Tennessee High School Ethics Bowl (THSEB), which will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2019, 8:30am-6pm, at the Holiday Inn at World’s Fair Park in downtown Knoxville. Breakfast and lunch are provided for all volunteers! As one of the largest outreach programs of its kind in the country, our program seeks to foster critical thinking and moral reasoning skills in local high school students. In addition to contributing to students’ academic and career performance, the program helps to instill key intellectual and civic virtues among future leaders of our democracy. At the event, students analyze a series of wide-ranging ethical issues and then present their ideas to judges and other teams in a fun and friendly atmosphere. Topics for this year’s event include ethical dilemmas related to organ donation, privacy, gerrymandering, animal conservation, and many more. Additional information about the event can be found at the THSEB website: http://philosophy.utk.edu/ethics. There are a variety of ways that you can volunteer on the day of the event to help make the THSEB a success and provide a memorable experience for over 100 students who will join us from 18 schools across middle and east Tennessee: • As a JUDGE, you will listen to teams present their arguments and score

them based on their clarity, engagement with the central ethical dimensions of the case, deliberative thoughtfulness, and respectfulness. Again, no background in ethics or philosophy is required to be a judge. We will provide you with an informational packet and answer any questions you might have. A brief judges’ tutorial will be conducted the morning of the competition.

• As a MODERATOR, you will present the cases, read the questions to be answered, keep time, and control the room during matches. All materials will be provided for you on the day of the event, including a script to follow.

• As a GENERAL VOLUNTEER, you will assist on the day of the event with

setup, registration and other logistics, etc. To indicate your interest, as well as the capacity in which you’d

like to serve, please fill out our volunteer interest form:

http://tiny.utk.edu/thseb19vol Thanks in advance for your help, and we hope to hear from you soon! Feel free to contact Dr. Alex Feldt, THSEB Director, with any questions or concerns at [email protected].

The THSEB is co-sponsored by the Department of Philosophy and the UT Humanities Center, with financial support from Home Federal Bank
