To establish functional reporting system to monitor the safety of all medicine.

To learn more about the safety profile of new medicine in the early post marketing phase.

To learn more about the ADR profile of the specific medicine(s) in your population.

To estimate the incidence of known ADR to the specific medicine(s) in your population

To gather more information on the safety profile of the new chemical entity in the early post marketing phase.


Objective: To establish functional reporting system to monitor the safety of all medicine.

• It’s a system that relies entirely on the motivation of individuals to record and send information about something bad that has happened to a patient to the organization responsible for collecting reports of adverse effects (usually a local or national pharmacovigilance centre).

• Play an important role in post marketing drug regulation➢ primary method of collecting post marketing information on safety

of drug• The early detection of signals of new, rare and serious ADRs


Pros Cons

Effective and very wide spectrum of subjects➢ Cover the whole population, All marketed medicine

Under-reporting

Easiest method to implement Capture only suspected ADRs

Continuous monitoring throughout life-cycle of medicine

Strong biases in reporting e.g. seriousness, severity, new medicine, advertising of

product, publicity of specific ADRs

Relatively inexpensive Causal relationship in case report usually uncertain

Least labor intensive Denominator unknown

Detect signals of new, rare or serious ADRs

Difficult to detect ➢ delay ADRs and➢ high background incidence ADRs


A prospective, longitudinal, observational, cohort study of adverse events associated with one or more medicines

• Based on the principles of intensive monitoring schemes

An early warning system of problems with new medicines

A time- limited program to complement other PV activities; not intend to replace spontaneous reporting

Objective: To gather more information on the safety profile of the new chemical entity in the early post marketing phase.

Early detection of signals of unexpected ADRs More labor intensive than SR and TSR

Denominator information allows to incidence rate Most costly than SR

Produce a near-complete profile of the adverse events and/or ADRs for the medicines of interest

Much data collected most of which represent “ background noise”

Assessment risk factor;- Identification of risk factor between drug and

comparisons

Lost of follow-up may be substantial - difficult to reach the required cohort size- need to be active managed

Pregnancy outcome New to health care professionals and PV center- Training required Death recorded (death rate)

Signal at early stage; e.g. reduce or failure of therapeutic effect, medication error

Cannot detect very rare problems with medicines
