HCoV-EMC (MERS) is the first human coronavirus in lineage C of the betacoronavirus genus. Its closest relatives are coronaviruses HKU4 and HKU5, isolated from Tylonycteris pachypus and Pipistrellus abramus bats, respectively.

Meningitis was diagnosed by clinical features of fever (>38°C), headache, nuchal rigidity, abnormal CSF profile (CSF protein >45 mg/dL and leukocyte >5/mL [reference 0–5/mL]), and/or meningeal involvement noted by brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Encephalitis was diagnosed when there was evidence of brain parenchyma involvement (e.g., paralysis or focal or generalized seizure) and when the finding of brain MRI or electroencephalogram (EEG) was compatible with encephalitis. Excluded: CSF samples from meningitis or encephalitis patients with noninfectious diagnosis, including traumatic, metabolic, malignant, vascular, surgical, hypoxic, and toxic causes,

….Making the “Unknown Known”
• There are ~500,000 viruses spanning 23 viral families in wildlife that have the potential to cause human infection
• This means, for every “known” Ebola virus there are likely 10-20,000 distinct “unknown” “Ebola-like” viruses of the same Filo-virus family circulating among an “unknown” pool of wild animals
• The same holds for HIV and retroviruses, SARS and coronaviruses etc.
111 viral families recognized to-date infecting all hosts around the globe
23 of these families likely contain species capable of infecting humans
~1.3 million viral species spanning the 23 viral families are estimated to be circulating in mammals and water fowl
Of these 500,000 - 700,000 viral species are likely to be of human pandemic /epidemic potential
To-date a total of 385 viruses are known to have infected humans
The Global Virome Projects presents a path to the identification all viruses in wildlife that can infect humans - so we can prepare
for them before they jump to us

Livelihood Impacts & Economic Pressures
• Majority of emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) in people are of animal origin (zoonotic)
• 75% of emerging zoonoses have wildlife origins
• Human activities at the interface linked to EIDs (Nipah virus, SARS, Ebola)
• Annual population growth among highest in buffers to protected areas near wildlife

The Challenge
Pre-empt or combat, at their source, the first stage of emergence of zoonotic diseases that pose a significant threat to public health (potentially pandemic infections)
The goal of the PREDICT project in
Thailand is to strengthen surveillance
and diagnostics to protect human
and animal health.
