Guide for the Development of Bicycle Facilities, 4th EditionThis guide provides information on how to accommodate bicycle travel and operations in most riding environments. It is intended to present sound guidelines that result in facilities that meet the needs of bicyclists and other highway users. Sufficient flexibility is permitted to encourage designs that are sensitive to local context and incorporate the needs of bicyclists, pedestrians, and motorists. However, in some sections of this guide, suggested minimum dimensions are provided. These are recommended only where further deviation from desirable values could increase crash frequency or severity. This guide has been updated from the previous guide published in 1999. The fact that new guidance is presented herein does not imply that existing bicycle facilities are inadequate or unsafe, nor does it mandate the initiation of improvement projects. The intent of this document is to provide guidance to designers and planners by referencing a recommended range of design values and describing alternative design approaches. 2012. 200 pp.

AASHTO Guide for the Planning, Design, and Operation of Pedestrian Facilities, 1st EditionThe purpose of this guide is to provide guidance on the planning, design, and operation of pedestrian facilities along streets and highways. Specifically, the guide focuses on identifying effective measures for accommodating pedestrians on public rights-of-way. Appropriate methods for accommodating pedestrians, which vary among roadway and facility types, are described in this guide. The primary audiences for this manual are planners, roadway designers, and transportation engineers, whether at the state or local level, the majority of whom make decisions on a daily basis that affect pedestrians. This guide also recognizes the profound effect that land use planning and site design have on pedestrian mobility and addresses these topics as well. 2004. 142 pp.

2014 Supplement to the Highway Safety Manual, 1st EditionThe 2010 Highway Safety Manual (HSM-1) was developed to provide highway professionals with analytical tools to enhance the consideration of safety in the highway development process. Two new chapters that comprise this Highway Safety Manual Supplement (HSM-1S) help utilize the predictive method to estimate the expected average crash frequency (in total, by crash type, or by crash severity) for both freeways and ramps with known characteristics. The third chapter, Appendix B for Part C of the HSM-1, describes two specialized procedures to be used with the predictive method presented in the new Chapters 18 and 19; the first procedure is used to calibrate the predictive models; the second, the Empirical Bayes Method, helps combine observed crash frequencies with the estimates provided by the predictive models. 2014. 324 pp.

Highway Safety Manual, 1st Edition, with 2014 Supplement The Highway Safety Manual (HSM) was developed to help measurably reduce the frequency and severity of crashes on American roadways by providing tools for considering safety in the project development process. The HSM assists practitioners in selecting countermeasures and prioritizing projects, comparing alternatives, and quantifying and predicting the safety performance of roadway elements considered in planning, design, construction, maintenance, and operation. The three-volume HSM features a synthesis of validated highway research, procedures for including safety in project decisions, and analytical tools for predicting impact on road safety. If you are interested in learning more about an electronic tool that is now available from AASHTOWare that can assist with the application of the manuals Part B, the Safety Management Process, please visit www.safetyanalyst.org. Guide for the Local Calibration of the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide, 1st EditionThis guide provides guidance to calibrate the Mechanistic Empirical Pavement

Design Guide (MEPDG) software to local conditions, policies, and materials. It provides the highway community with a state-of-the-practice tool for the design of new and rehabilitated pavement structures, based on mechanistic-empirical (M-E) principles. The design procedure calculates pavement responses (stresses, strains, and deflections) and uses those responses to compute incremental damage over time. The procedure empirically relates the cumulative damage to observed pavement distresses. 2010. 208 pp.

Guidelines for Geometric Design of Very Low-Volume Local Roads (ADT 400), 1st Edition

These guidelines address the unique design issues highway designers and engineers face when determining appropriate cost-effective geometric design policies for very low-volume local roads. This approach covers both new and existing construction projects. Because geometric design guidance for very low-volume local roads differs from the policies applied to high-volume roads, these guidelines may be used in lieu of A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets, also known as The Green Book. Design values are presented in both metric and U.S. customary units. 2001. 94 pp.

Roadway Lighting Design Guide, 6th EditionThis guide replaces the 1984 publication entitled An Informational Guide for Roadway Lighting. It has

been revised and brought up to date to reflect current practices in roadway lighting. The guide provides a general overview of lighting systems from the point of view of the transportation department and recommends minimum levels of quality. The guide incorporates the illuminance and luminance design methods, but does not include the small target visibility (STV) method. 2005. 70 pp.

Guide For High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) Facilities, 3rd EditionThis guide suggests methods and designs for dedicated facilities to encourage greater use of existing transportation systems, such as increased

use of public transit (primarily buses), carpools, vanpools, or other ridesharing modes. Guidance is given for planning and design of preferential treatment for high-occupancy vehicles (HOVs). 2004. 218 pp.

Guide for Park-and-Ride Facilities, 2nd EditionInformation presented in this guide is intended to provide a general knowledge of the park-and-ride

planning and design process. Applicable local ordinances, design requirements, and building codes must be consulted for their affect on the planning and design process. Local data resources, development patterns, and transit networks may present unique opportunities for park-and-ride implementation, and should be explored. 2004. 154 pp.

    DESIGN

A Guide for Achieving Flexibility in Highway Design, 1st EditionContext-sensitive solutions (CSS) reflect the need to consider highway projects as more than just transportation facilities. Achieving a flexible, context-sensitive design solution requires

designers to fully understand the reasons behind the processes, design values, and design procedures that are used. This guide shows highway designers how to think flexibly, how to recognize the many choices and options they have, and how to arrive at the best solution for the particular situation or context. This publication represents a major step toward institutionalizing CSS into state transportation departments and other agencies charged with transportation project development. 2004. 138 pp.

AASHTO Centennial Commemorative BookAASHTO 19142014: A Century of Achievement for a Better TomorrowOn the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the American Association of Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), this book captures the essence of Americas transportation history since 1914. It provides snapshots, milestones, stories, and photographs that catalogue the events, advancements, decisions, people, and partnerships that shaped and influenced this century of transportation achievement. It is a pretty amazing story. Transportation is at the core of American life. It has influenced the geography and economy of the country. The availability of transportation from waterways to railroads to highways and airports has defined where and how population centers grew, business and industry developed, and people stayed connected with each other. Americas transportation system evolved to meet the expanding mobility needs of an increasingly widespread populationbuses, trains, airplanes, rapid transit, highways, higher-speed railroads, and more. Slowly, roads began to catch up with the itch to keep moving. 2014. 336 pp.
