Highlights ABANEWS

Try the questionnaire below for yourself!:

·The diver:oYou want to jump in and get on with it. oYou want to get it over with oYou like to see if things work. oYou like to move onto the next thing. oYou work well in short bursts of activity.

·The dreamer:oYou think a lot about the subject. oYou like to research things fully. oYou put off practical aspects such as writing. oYou have no idea where time goes.

·The logician:oYou like things to make sense. oYou like to know the reasons behind things. oYou are organized in your approach to study. oYou like problem solving.

·The searchlight:oYou find everything interesting. oYou like to see the big picture. oYou have bits of information on lots of things. oYou like details but don't remember them.

You find it hard to select what is relevant.

Each of these styles has strengths and weaknesses, and all can learn to develop other learning abilities: ·the diver, for example, needs to develop the skills of listening and reflection ·the logician needs to develop creative and interpersonal skills ·the dreamer needs to develop time keeping, assertiveness and organizational skills; ·the searchlight needs to develop analytical and critical thinking, and to pay attention to details.

Finally, take note of the following good advice from Cottrell (1999) in approaching all learning tasks: ·approach learning as an adventure ·use many senses ·identify what attracts you ·use active learning ·take responsibility for your learning ·trust in your own intelligence ·recognize your own learning preferences.

by : Rachmie Sari Baso, M.Educ, StdsReference: The Study Skills Handbook in 1999, Stella Cottrell

Stella Cottrell (1999) lists four learning styles (remember this is just one way of categorizing our understanding – it is no secret formula). Her categories include: ·the diver (jumps into things, acts in bursts of activity, is impulsive) ·the logician (is organized, slow, a perfectionist and notices details) ·the dreamer (thinks in circles, is not good at keeping to time lines, thinks a lot about things and likes to research things); and the searchlight (is interested in everything, likes the big picture, is not too good with the small details).

Study Skills for Beginners

Do you really love English? What do you do to improve it? Watch a video, listen to some English songs, or speak English with your friends? Well, those are great ideas! But do you know that building a routine is also important? The reason is it will help you make studying English a habit. And that's the best way to improve your English!! Well, here we have some routine lists you should try to make your English much better dayby day! Try it!!

Make Learning a Habit The first thing you should know about learning foreign language is expose many different areas every day. It means for the basic you can take short listening and reading. And the other day you can write or speak simple conversation with your friends. Just remember don't try to learn too much in any one area too quickly!

Listen - 10 MinutesListening to some easy-listening music or your favorite song is good idea to make your ears familiar with new English words. Do it continuously to get the best result!

Read - 10 Minutes Reading some favorite books, with the simple vocabularies of course, and try to write the meaning of the difficult words or you can highlight it, so when someday you re-read it again, it will attract your eyes in a second!

Improve your Vocabulary - 5 Minutes Take five minutes to write down all the new words you find in your listening and reading exercises. Keep a notebook, and write in the translation in your native language.

Grammar - 5 - 10 Minutes Think about what you are studying in English class (if you are taking it). Or, if you are studying by yourself, take out your grammar book and find one grammar point to review. Take a quick look at the grammar and then think about the listening and your reading. Did you hear or read these forms? How were they used?

Speaking - 5 Minutes It is very important to move your mouth and speak! Even if you only speak to yourself. Take five minutes and speak out loud (not silently). Try to quickly summarize what you listened to and what you read. Can you do it? Of course, it's better if you can do this with a friend. Find a friend and study together a few times a week. You can practice together.

That's it! Approximately thirty minutes a day, every day - or at least four times a week! If you continue to do this, you will be surprised at how quickly your English improves! Of course, there are many more ways to improve your English. However, make a habit of doing these simple exercises at least four times a week. Watch a video online or something you love, try to use English in every way you can - even if the language is too difficult.

GHOST-SHIP / GOSSIP- God cannot Forgive

In this era, almost everyone like to waste the time by gossiping.

It is like a fun, isn't it? But, do you know what gossip actually is? Gossip is derived from the word “Ghost” and the word “Ship”, means that you talk about “ghost”, something nonsense. In other interpretation you act has any relationship with ghost or “Satanic ghost”.

Gossip in moslem religion is called ghibah. But do you know what is the difference of ghibah and fitnah? What is the similarity of both? Fitnah : You talk about untruth things to discredit someone else

Ghibah : You talk about truth things to discredit someone elseThe similarity, both of them are sinful acts. Why? Because you do have purpose to discredit someone.

Sometimes you waste the time to talk about others; you talk too much until you do not realize that you just break the limit. You become jealousy and unintended talking to discredit someone (some whispers of satan will draw you to fall into fitnah act).

It means that gossip is more sinful act than adultery. Allah may forgive someone who did adultery, but not to them who did ghibah or gossip. Someone who did the gossip act cannot get forgiveness from Allah. So, brothers and sisters, do not waste your time by doing this. You can do a creative and productive project than do something useless. Use your imagination in creative work; you will be paid worthy for it.

Study Skills Benefits

Hi Guys, here I will share

about study skill. Study skill also

may start from organization.

Organization is one of way to

improve our confidence; from that

organization we may learn many

structural and personal

development.

You have to know that

organization is very useful in

the office. Students are the ones who can feel fortunate

to pursue science college. There are so many brothers

and sisters who did not have a chance, and dreams

merely wishful. So, is it really possible if we become a

member in one of organization in university, it means

we have take the advantage of the time as possible in

addition to learning in the classroom.

Nowadays, a lot of students at university try to find

some jobs to explore their skills. Although, they still have

responsibility to finish their study, but they have to take

this way because experience in working can't be bought

by anything. Ready to take risk, it means that they are

ready to get valuable experience.

Sometimes, students who are working ignore their

study. They just focus on working. But, there are still

students who are focus on their study. It will be a

great experience to face the real world in working

after they graduated from their study.

Being a tutor in a course, a private teacher, selling

something, etc. They are a few example jobs that

students can do. As long as students can arrange

their time well, they can choose what job that

appropriate with their skill. For example, a student of

English Education Department in fifth semester, he

joins an English course. He gets some jobs to teach

in school. He gets not only money, but also

valuable experience.

Anything is possible if we have passion to do

something. Students have to have creative thinking to

create something that will be useful for their future.

But, studying or working? Just take it easy for this

case. As long as students can manage the time,

it's good for them to get money and valuable

experience.

ABA BALIKPAPAN PREPARES THE GRADUATE WITH ENGLISH FOR SAFETY (Works skills tendency) The effect of the relationship higher education level demands and ABA Balikpapan concerns to prepare the graduates to work in any work field areas that are necessary in Balikpapan makes ABA Balikpapan offers the students with English for Safety. The significant tendencies cover the increasing number of unemployment; both educated and uneducated unemployment. This unemployment is occurred as the result of the socio-economic growth structure, global politics changes, sciences, and also the science and technology growth. They cause changes the basic qualification of graduates needs in the work places as the requirements to enter working areas in many companies in Balikpapan.

According to Paul and Murdoch (1992) that to face the work places tendency, a graduate should be equipped with soft skills, so the graduates can be major and ultimate in a working competition. The first rank soft skills needs are the skills of English and science. Science and English mastery are the most needed skills by many companies. The second rank are; computer communication (internet), team communication and the skills for adaption.

According to Paul and Murdoch (1992), English need has percentage level as 86.3%, meanwhile the graduates who have Advanced English mastery level are only at 6,9%, graduates who have Intermediate English mastery level at 52.3%, and the rest the graduates who do not have any skills in English about 40.8%.

Therefore, many vacant positions in many work field areas are not occupied. As the head of ALKON KALIMANTAN, H.Adenuddin Alwy, SE.,MM, he says that “By judging the market condition of the requirement workers, ABA Balikpapan tries to respond by preparing the graduates to get the position to fulfil those vacant positions. Many of ABA Balikpapan graduates are absorbed in international companies, air flights companies, communication services, public relations, and trainers in international companies”, he assures that this changes should be followed as the requirements of the workplaces.

The effort to respond for the changes in works skills tendency, now ABA Balikpapan offers English for Safety subject for its students. Many companies in this era require their employees to understand about English for Safety. Since safety become the main international issue to cover the rights of the workers as a part of human rights. In Balikpapan, there are many vacant positions needs employees who mastery in English for Safety, but the capable employee to fulfil this place is less. That is why ABA Balikpapan should be a good choice as one of education institution in Balikpapan, because the concerns to prepare the graduates to work in future condition.
