On July 7, 2015, ABEST21 held the 10 th anniversary celebration at Hotel New Otani Tokyo that was attended by many members. ABEST21 was founded on July 1, 2005 with 16 business schools from Japan and other countries. In 10 years, as of July 2015, the number of members has grown by more than five times, to 89 members from 18 countries. Despite the Ramadan in July, many members from ASEAN countries kindly attended the celebration. ABEST21 activities in quality assurance of management education in the past 10 years started with accreditation of Japanese professional graduate schools. We were authorized by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) as an accrediting institution for business schools in October 2007, and for professional graduate schools of intellectual property in October 2011. Currently ABEST21 is engaged in the accreditation of 15 schools, including initial and maintenance accreditation. Based on the knowledge and experience gained through these activities, accreditation for the business school from Malaysia was conducted for the first time in 2011. After that the number of applicant schools from overseas continued to increase. At present the number of accredited schools from overseas is 15, representing 6 countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, China, Thailand, and Russia. The number of reciprocal agreements with other accrediting institutions has increased, including BAN-PT of Indonesia, MQA of Malaysia, ONESQA of Thailand, and AQAN of ASEAN. on ABEST21 Bylaws 1. Summary for the last decade (from 2005 to 2015) ========================================= The year 2015 marked the 10th anniversary for ABEST21. Here I would like to look back at the past 10 years to soar towards the next decade starting 2016. On July 7, 2015, ABEST21 held the 10th anniversary celebration at Hotel New Otani Tokyo that was attended by many members. Review Model in Asia (2008)”, “Corporate Needs for MBA Education (2009)”, “Competencies of Management Professionals (2010)”, “Developing Asia MBA Curriculum (2011)”, “Developing ABEST21 Asia Quality Assurance System Model(2012)”, and “Fuji Xerox CSR (2014)”. These projects are an extension of ABEST21 activities from quality assurance system development to creation of teaching materials. Upon summarizing the past decade in 2015, a goal for the next decade was set to further strengthen the Global Knowledge Network which struck its root in Asia. With the increasing number of accredited schools in Asia, the quality assurance of education is now mutually acknowledged and the base to promote international exchange among the accredited schools is prepared. The next decade will be the period to substantially globalize the management education at the Asian business schools. It is globalization in substance, not in word: in order to nurture management professionals who contribute to sustainable economic growth in Asia which encompasses diverse cultures, management education should be based on three principles: “Globalizing the School’s Management Education”, “Humanizing the School’s Management Education”, and “Collaborating with industries”. I believe it is the next mission of ABEST21 to develop such education and contribute to fostering of management professionals to meet the needs of globalization in economy, society, and culture. In order to meet the needs of the globalization age, business schools are required to build in their campus a “platform” to nurture human resources who can “coexist” with others from different cultural and social backgrounds, under “diversified and different” society. Such step cannot be taken if we see this world as a closed rather than open space. It is the mission of globalization for the business schools to see the school campus full of diverse students as a “platform”, and foster future management professionals who are able to coexist with others within this “platform”. To build such platforms, cooperation among universities across the world is essential. Needless to say, quality assurance of education is a prerequisite for such cooperation. ABEST21 will contribute to “preparing the educational research environment to respond to the globalization”. “Globalizing the School’s Management Education” and “Humanizing the School’s Management Education” are two sides of the same coin. In the context of accelerating advancement of scientific technology, globalization of the society, economy, and culture, and the information technology in this 21st century, ABEST21 will strive to contribute to nurturing of world-class management professionals at the business schools. At the same time we will make efforts to establish a system to share globally the quality assurance of the education, and to support fostering management professionals who will be able to contribute to the sustainable development of the future economy and society. (Fumio Itoh, President) 2. General Information ========================================= Annual Conference 2016 On Tuesday March 1 and Wednesday March 2, 2016, ABEST21 will hold the Peer Review Committee, Accreditation Committee, Board Meeting, General Assembly, and a Global Knowledge Network Forum at Sony University, Sony Corporation in Shinagawa. 3. The seminar was held with the support of Professor Sujinda Chemsripong, the Dean of Faculty of Business, Economics and Communications, Naresuan University. Membership Information ========================================= 1) New member We are pleased to welcome a new school member, Graduate School of Commerce, Burapha University, based in Chon Buri, Thailand, whose application was ratified by the Membership Committee. The University was renamed as Burapha in 1990, but its origin goes back to Bangsaen Educational College founded in 1955. The University has 50,000 students. Details will be introduced in the next edition of the eNews. Graduate School of Commerce, Burapha University, Chon Buri, Thailand Dean: Banpot Wiroonratch, Ph.D. 2) SBI Graduate School and the new Dean Message from Dean Hideki Ishikawa of the Department of Business Administration, SBI Graduate School: SBI Graduate School was established in April 2008 with the full support of SBI Group which aims to become a “creator of new business”. SBI Graduate School is a correspondence graduate school focusing on e-learning via Internet, but face-to-face classes are also included in the program because we emphasize discussions among students and provide them with careful guidance. Students living abroad, e.g. in U.S., China, Viet Nam, Russia, Venezuela, or those with disabilities are also participating in the face-to-face classes via web conference system. The School emphasizes nurturing entrepreneurs and leaders of in-house ventures. Students are required to prepare business plans choosing their own topic as a goal of their research. Furthermore, the School also puts stress on moral culture to nourish ethical values and humanity. In addition to the study of business theories and practical skills, Chinese Classics represented by the Analects of Confucius and modern business thoughts and philosophy such as by Eiichi Shibusawa are included in the program. The School was accredited by ABEST21 in 2013. During the whole accreditation process, the faculty and administrative staff went through zero-base discussions on our education,

research and business and organized a new curriculum, strengthened the research system, and settled a drastic medium-term business plan including campus relocation. We are currently realizing the plan on a steady basis. Since my inauguration as the Dean in April 2015, we have been making efforts to improve our School, which we are ready to continue. At the same time I look forward to collaborating with members of ABEST21 based on its network. 5. 2015 Retrospect (January to December 2015) ========================================= Time flies, and another year has passed.
