About Haig Girls’ School: our Vision, Mission and Philosophy Self-directed Learners, Critical and Creative Thinkers Established in 1951, Haig Girls’ School is an all-girls’ government primary school. Our school has a heritage of excellent all-round education and this is affirmed in our school vision, ‘Leaders of Character, Striving for Excellence in a Vibrant School’, and mission ‘to develop self-directed learners and critical and creative thinkers who lead and serve with integrity and compassion’. We are committed to nurturing character, leadership and 21st century competencies through a distinctive learning experience that is values-based, engaging, rigorous and innovative. Educating the whole person is important to us because we believe in preparing our pupils for life in the 21st century. We believe that our pupils are never too young to make a difference and give them a voice through advocacy, service and innovation. Our philosophy is that every child can think, learn, achieve and excel. In short, we believe that each child is different, special and talented in her own way. We value our pupils for who they are and seek to bring out the best in each child. Arts Education HGS is one of three primary schools in Singapore to receive the National Arts Council (NAC)'s pinnacle National Arts Education (Blaze) Award. Arts education is integral to 21st century learning at HGS. The arts support character and citizenship education. They stimulate creativity and innovation, and give pupils a personal voice. Our pupils participate in diverse learning experiences in art, music, drama and dance. They also benefit from innovative programmes, e.g. museum-based learning and Drama in Maths, designed in collaboration with museums and the NAC. HGS nurtures pupils’ creativity and spirit of innovation by involving them in creative work and value creation. Our pupils are engaged in the creation of artworks, music and dance sequences in their Art, Music and PE lessons. Through Integrated Project Work, our pupils work collaboratively to create new value: solutions, inventions, creative writing and artworks that address community needs and social issues. Our pupils are also immersed in a stimulating learning environment in which they are taught in innovative ways and contexts through drama as pedagogy, inquiry-based and place-based learning. Holistic Assessment HGS has been a prototype school for Holistic Assessment (HA) since 2010. HA seeks to build the child's confidence and desire to learn, with a focus on knowing and developing the child as a whole. A range of assessment modes, e.g. written and performance tasks, enables each pupil to demonstrate what she knows and can do. Formative assessment enables teachers to provide pupils with quality feedback and plan how they will deepen pupils' learning. Pupils are also encouraged to take responsibility for their learning through reflection and self-assessment. Talent Development To nurture the diverse talents of our pupils, our school has developed D3T2 (Discover, Develop & Dedicate your Talent Time), a school-based talent development programme. Pupils who are talented in the visual arts, music, dance, drama, Chinese creative arts, Maths, Science, Information & Communication Technology or athletic are given opportunities to explore and develop their interests and talents in these areas. As part of our efforts to develop leaders of character, D3T2 participants are encouraged to ‘dedicate’ their talents in service to the school and community.
