1. We will add English to our first language and learn the traditions of America.

2. We will work to become model U.S. citizens the way countless immigrants have done before.

3. We will be a learning family and stress the importance of education, including partnering with our schools’ teachers.

4. We will make life-long learning our family’s goal and establish college graduation or advanced education as a family tradition.

5. We will constantly strive to improve our skills in order to meet our family’s financial needs.

6. We will prepare for our long-term financial responsibilities, including making plans for savings, housing, college funds, health insurance, and retirement.

7. We will learn healthy nutrition and exercise habits and be attentive to our family’s health needs.

8. We will seek balance in our family by spending quality time together and nurturing supportive relationships.

9. We will accept civic responsibilities and give back to our community from the blessings bestowed upon us.

10. We will carry our home country in our hearts but commit to our obligations in the United States.

A RoadMap to the American Dream

All Americans, whether native born or adopted byour nation, will have the opportunity to achievetheir American Dream.

Mission:

Page 3: About the Cisneros Center for New Americans

Dear Friends and Family of the Cisneros Center,

status? Or will they be educated, productive, and a source of youthful energyfor every institution in American society? Either way, they will move the needleof national progress in one direction or the other.

We established the Cisneros Center inspired by the notion that, as a nation, weneed New American. Welcoming and integrating New Americans is both amoral imperative and economic necessity. And so, we work to empower NewAmericans with the tools they need to achieve self sufficiency and to thrive inAmerican society, and to ensure the communities receiving these newestAmericans are welcoming and supportive.

We approach our work with the singular goal of creating a future in which allAmericans, whether native born or adopted by our nation, have the opportunityto achieve their American Dream. I love this country, and I feel a deep sense ofresponsibility to ensure immigrants strengthen the hundreds of communitiesthey now call home. The Cisneros Center is poised to make a meaningfulcontribution to our nation; as we look ahead, I invite you to learn more aboutthe Cisneros Center’s mission and objectives and I offer my sincere appreciationfor your future active participation in this critical work.

Sincerely,

Henry Cisneros

The full integration of immigrants, particularly the largenumber of poor immigrants, is both an opportunity and achallenge for our nation. Most are going to be here forthe long haul. We can also say with certainty that theywill be numerous. Will they be undercompensated, undereducated, and in time resigned to second class

The Need for Action

The Cisneros Center is a National Partner in the

White House’s “Building Welcoming Communities Campaign,” an effort to

make every community in America a place New

Americans can prosper.

New Americans make up a quarter of the American population – more than at any point in our history.

By 2050, New Americans will represent one third of the US population. And, our nation needs their contributions like never before.

Yet, today, New Americans lack the tools to navigate American life and their communities often don’t know how to support and welcome them. This stifles their potential and limits their contributions.

“At the beginning, the language was achallenge. I knew minimal English. Icould say things like, ‘hello,’ ‘how areyou,’ ‘my name is,’ ‘I am 11 years old.”

Rubicely, Springdale, Arkansas

The choice we must make:

Will New Americans be undercompensated, undereducated, and in time resigned to second-class status? Or will they be educated, productive, and a source of youthful energy for every institution of American society?

The answer rests in ouractions.

“When the stranger in our midst appeals to us, we must not repeat thesins and the errors of the past. We must resolve now to live as noblyand as justly as possible, as we educate new generations not to turntheir back on our ‘neighbors’ and everything around us.”

- Pope Francis

We convene local community leaders to increase collaboration between organizations, fill gaps in services, and align the community's resources with the needs of New Americans.

Our Pilot Program: As our economy has evolved, New Americans havemade homes in new places, like Northwest Arkansas. Here, the foreign-born population grew 850% over the last two decades – a challenging shiftfor any community. In 2013, leaders from the region recruited the CisnerosCenter to make Northwest Arkansas a hometown for all its residents. In thefall of 2014, we launched our pilot program to realize this vision.

Imagine…

This is our Vision for America

A nation where all Americans, whether native born or adopted by our country, have the opportunity to achieve their American Dream.

A nation where we know all our children will receive an excellent education and have their choice of college.

A nation where we live healthy lives, and have access to care when we need it.

A nation where we can own a home, be self-sufficient, and enjoy the fruits of our labor.

A nation where we feel valued for who we are and have the opportunity to contribute to our fullest potential.

A nation where we learn from one another and celebrate our shared traditions.
