Pep Talk on Policing by MA Saleem. IPS

Sept 3rd, Wednesday: Midtown's weekly meeting at RCL hall wore a busy look. Guest for the day was none other than Police commissioner of the City Dr. M.A.Saleem. Pres. Venky and his team managed to pull out a good crowd for the speaker that included kids from RMA accompanied by the principal Mrs. Vanitha Bhat, innerwheel members who were celebrating their Friendship day, people from the media, and few guests of the Rotarians. The meeting started off with the introduction of the guest by Rtn. Wajid Suryani who had done a great deal of homework in collecting statistics about Mr. Saleem from the news papers for the last 1 month. It was followed by release of the traffic rules hoardings to be given to the schools by the Commissioner. Rtn. M. N. Srinivas, with his experience and knowledge in his driving school, has put considerable efforts to prepare these hoardings.

Mr. Saleem himself took off nicely starting from the history of policing. He said that the Policeman should be the first friend and the best friend. Policeman should be people friendly and the fear of police should be removed from the

people's mind. Removal of anonymity and presence of alertness among people can reduce the crime in the society to a large extent. Also he insisted that police should improve their credibility to be more accountable to the public.

Coming to the traffic policing he said lack of good public transport system, increasing vehicles on the road, lack of good road discipline are resulting in increasing road traffic accidents. Implementing automated challaning, stringent traffic laws are improving the traffic management in Mysore. He emphasized the “Value of Life” while dealing with the driving on the road and said “we should live our dreams” and “dreams should not end up in graves”. The whole talk was interspersed with suitable anecdotes, statistics that kept the audience interested. It was good meeting well conceived and well organized –congratulations to Azeez bhai, Wajid, Venky and his team.

Now for this week's dose of Kagga

Teachers' day at RMAIt was a different kind of an event at RMA for the

teachers' day this year. A good experience for the teachers as well. The programme was scheduled for 2 days Friday and Saturday. First day 1st session belonged to Innerwheel sisters organizing 'cooking without fire' competition for teachers. The second half was occupied by our PM. 1st half was a fun filled enjoyable event showing their talent. Vow! What a competition & professional presentation that was. Our most talented & artistic drawing Master Mr. Manjunath won the 1st prize and stole the show out beating all the women compatriots. Thanks to president and members of Inner Wheel for organizing such thoughtful show.

Second half was the one & only Narendra Bhai Modi's. The only PM after Nehru who addressed the country's teachers & children on Teachers' day. What a message that was. Critics are critics and they are bound to do that. Politics apart it was a great move by the Country's Pradhan Sevak. Our teachers & children were glued to screen throughout the session enjoying every bit of it. Thanks Raju for arranging the AV equipments.

Saturday was fully allotted for the children to entertain their teachers with dance, humour and games. All the teachers fully refreshed from the previous day's events whole heartedly participated throughout. The catchy part was our secretary of RMA Ramki talking to teachers and thanking them for their efforts. Following Modi, he also gave some inputs for teachers to nurture the talent within their wards. The presence of School Chairman Allagappan uncle, Secretary Ramki sir, President Venky and Secretary Mohan created lot of energy with the staff and students.

Finally the cake was cut by teachers along with students which was arranged by 10th STD children. A sumptuous veg & Non-veg lunch was arranged from Hotel Highway18 for the teachers and students.A big thanks for the Rotarians Vishwa, Milti, Seena, Umesh, Raaghu for being on the occasion and charging them. - Rtn. Aiyanna

A AC H A RYA D E VO B H AVA- T EAC H E RS' DAY BY INNERWHEEL. On 5th Sept morning inner wheel midtown organized Teachers day in a unique way at Rotary Midtown Academy. All the teachers participated. We had cooking competition for the teachers, time slot of 30 minutes was given and they had to prepare one nutritional dish without using fire. The participants were so creative and able to project their skills in their work. We could see the influence of master chef program. Mr.Manjunath bagged the first place.

It gave me great pleasure in judging the dishes. Myself, Mrs.Roopa Ashok and Mrs. Uma Vivek were the judges for the event. We also recognized all the teachers and gave then

Life is Calling Sports conducted the 4th edition of Celebration Mysore 1/2 Marathon and 10K run. The event was scheduled on a Sunday morning so that the runners and their families get to soak the culture and heritage of Mysore over a weekend and participate in the fun filled events. Organisers expected 4000+ runners to participate in this running event. I know at least 70 mid towners by name and face. If I assume secretary Ta.Na. Mohan represented LIC – he was on stage with the LIC group- there were only a few faces from Mid-Town Rtn. Solanki and Rtn. Ravindranath, Rtn. Venkatesh and Rtn. Narendra Babu and Annetes Deepa Narendra, and Pratham Mohan.

It was a pleasant morning, sun peeping through the clouds, a few drops of rain

was refreshing too. A lot of young energy of college students and a fairly good MC kept the spirit of participants high. Credit to the organizers the events were flagged off on time but for the 5km walk which started late only by 5minutes. At kilometer intervals drinking water, energy drinks and biscuits were provided for those who wanted it. Volunteers and traffic police did an excellent job of neither hindering the runners \ walkers or the vehicular movement. Medical facility partners BGS Apollo Hospitals team reported there were no injuries and they were jobless (to quote the MC). All is well that ends well. Unfortunately to keep the tradition and culture of India going most cups were thrown on the road and could be seen all along the route. A sumptuous breakfast provided at the finishing line tasted good. But again plates were thrown near the bin and a pile of food was wasted. Considering t h e o r ga n i ze r s e x p e c t e d 4 0 0 0 participants they lacked in estimating the rubbish we may produce and had kept 2crates as bins to discard used plates. Even if civic sense prevailed at that point of time there was not a lot to do other than to follow the crowd and throw the plate where ever it takes your fancy or fold it up, carry it carefully taking care not to spill the leftover food on it and bring it to your vehicle and dispose of it at home. Its rather tedious don't you agree? Paying attention to small details would put this event in a league of its own.

·“POLIO FREE INDIA feeling is good,

but complacency could be the worst challenge for the programme. Many believe with the certification of India

becoming Polio Free early this year, the task against Polio for Rotary is over. They sure

cannot be farther from truth because Rotary's task is not over as long as there is Polio virus anywhere in the world.” - Dr. P. NARAYANA, Vice-Chairman, Rotary international's India National Polioplus Society.

Government of India has tentatively decided to hold Two National Immunization Days for Pulse Polio Immunization on 18th January, 2015 and 22nd February, 2015.

Rotarians have always participated in the programme with zeal and Enthusiasm and I request you to ensure the same momentum. As the Club President it will be Your responsibility reach the Polio Vaccine to every Child on National immunization days and to every new born as part of Routine Immunization. Remember 'Polio Eradication is the only programme that every Club is mandated to carry out.” I am just a phone call away for any help any time on Polio related matters. We will serve together, contributing up to the very end. The children of today and tomorrow will say “Thank you Rotary”. As you set out this year to Light up Rotary, you will not only change lives, you will also change the course of history, for every child and for Rotary.
