AFTN: Aeronautical Fix Telecommunications Network
AMHS: Air Traffic Service Message Handling System
-
ATN Overview
4
- A new telecommunication system standard for aviation.
- Performs the communication aspect in CNS/ATM and
manages
+ Ground-to-Ground (between aircraft and air traffic
controller) communication
+ Air-to-Ground (between air traffic controllers)
communication
- Provides data communication services for aeronautical
purpose, e.g. ATS (Air Traffic Services).
- Capable of bridging multiple ground systems
-

ATN - Concept
6
ATN is an internetwork architecture that allows
ground, air-ground and avionic data sub-networks to
interoperate by adopting common interface services
and protocols based on the ISO OSI reference model.

AFTN :
Aeronautical Fixed Telecommunication Network
Use voice transmission
When an airplane needs to communicate to the ground during the flight, the pilot contacts the ATC
(Air Traffic Controller) via the communication radio
(VHF) verbally. If the message needs to be delivered to
a remote airport, an operator rewrites the message in
a form of NOTAM format and transmits it through the
AFTN routers.
Problem: Voice Interference and Dialect
NOTAM: NOtice To AirMan

AFTN - Message
16
AFTN messaging is a low-voltage teletype used for
communicating air traffic flight plans and other aircraft
operational and weather messages such a NOTAMs, TAFs,
and METARs
-
AFTN Weaknesses
17
1. Not user friendly, using NOTAM format
2. Not secure enough
3. Low throughput and slow
4. Only support ground to ground communication
(G to G communication)
5. Air to Ground communication uses voice
communication (Very High Frequency Radio)
6. VHF Radio does not cover all regions in FIRs
