Lake Orion- Dragon on the Lake is five

years old and the popular summercommunity festival has grown fromhumble roots.

The event began as a fundraiser forthe 30th anniversary for the Orion ArtCenter, says Lauren Dinneweth, Directorof the Orion Art Center, the organizationthat produces the event. It had a fewcrafts, inflatables and the chalk artcontest.

Now theres a full art fair calledLakeside Living which anchors thefestival in downtown Lake Orion. Over50 national and local artists will sell andshowcase their work near Flint andBroadway. The fair will also feature astage for artists to demonstrate theirwork.

Other new features: on Friday night, anew 5K Run to benefit Help Kids Succeed,which provides clothing, supplies andother essentials to children in need. Theunique evening run is being organizedby the Lake Orion United MethodistChurch and sponsored by CrittentonHospital.

Another addition to the Friday night

lineup is a Charity Casino to be held inthe festivals Dragon Pub, hosted inpartnership with the Lake Orion Knightsof Columbus. The evening will includegames like Black Jack, Roulette, and TexasHold em. The Casino takes place 7-11:30pm Friday night.

The festival is in a celebration of art,music and Lake Orions century oldlegend of the dragon. An estimated15,000 people attended Dragon on theLake last year. It will be held the weekendof August 23-25.

A main feature of the event is the

dragon boat races. This year 30 teams willrace against each other, including 3 teamsof cancer survivors. Theres also a specialflower ceremony for those touched bycancer.

Dragon boat racing is one of thefastest growing water sports in the world.

Twenty people join together in a 40-footboat, all paddling together, while adrummer keeps the pace.

Th e fes tiv al inc lud es 3 sta ge s ofentertainment- a main stage in theDragon Pub, the Art Stage, and a stage inthe Kidz Zone, which has moved to thearea surrounding the Art Center this year.

On Saturday night, the main stage willfeature an 80s block party with theDetroit based Square Pegz. Artists can alsocompete in the Chalk Art Challenge inthe streets of downtown. The contestoffers $500 in prizes. And theres the BabyDragon Race in Paint Creek to end thefestival. The baby dragons will race fromChildrens Park to Meeks Park with a topprize of $599. Lake Orion- Dragon on the Lake began as a

fundraiser for the Orion Art Centers

scholarships, classes, camps and community

outreach.

The festival has grown tremendously, says

Lauren Dinneweth, Director of the nonprofit

arts organization which produces the event.

And as the event gets bigger weve been able

to partner with more community organizations,

enabling them to raise funds for their own causes

through Dragon on the Lake.

One example is the Friday night 5K run, a

new addition this year, organized by the Lake

Orion United Methodist Church. Proceeds will

ben efi t the Hel p Kids Suc cee d progr am,

providing students in need in Lake Orion and

Oxford with clothes, shoes, eyeglasses and

supplies.

If a child is comfortable with themselves

and has their basic needs met, theyll perform

better in school, says Volunteer Coordinator

Amy Lieblein. She estimates the churchs

program has helped over 50 students since 2008.

The run is sponsored by Crittenton Hospital

and will take participants through the streets of

Lake Orion. Afterward, runners can visit the

Lighted Boat Parade on Lake Orion or take in

some entertainment at the Dragon Pub.

Inside the Dragon Pub on Friday night, the

Knights of Columbus will be offering a Charity

Casino, with black jack, roulette and other

games. Proceeds will benefit the K of C charity

efforts focused on family and community

causes, including special needs organizations like

SCAMP, NOVA and Special Olympics.

In other areas of the festival, Dragon Boat

teams are encouraged to row for good, gaining

pledges for the charity of their choice.

The All Charity Auction hosted by the

LOUMC allows participants to choose the

charity of their choice with 100% of the

proceeds returned to charity. The Orion Art

Center has also donated a portion of the

proceeds from the Dragon Boat Races to fund

cancer research and awareness.
