In 2015, our tightly clenched fingers will be further loosened from the steering wheels of our cars as the responsibility for safety moves further from the driver to the capable technology of the car itself. While 2014 saw major advances in the creation of advanced driver assisted systems (ADAS), 2015 will find rapid strides being made in standards, regulations, and breakthrough solutions. Drivers behind the adoption of ADAS continue to be the growing number of road fatalities, the public outcry for safer systems, and legislation coming out of most developed countries. An added impetus behind adoption now, however, is the inclusion of ADAS technology in not just highend, but also lowcost vehicles. Additional breakthroughs in sensorfusion algorithms will join such physical sensors as near and farfield monitoring systems that use radar, LIDAR, ultrasonic, photonic mixer device (PMD), and camera and nightvision devices. These algorithms will increasingly deliver safety based on traffic, weather, time and distance, fuel economy, and emergency conditions—so that automotive systems all respond consistently, safely, and fast. Source: Texas Instruments Wireless connectivity will enable and integrate invehicle cameras and human body sensors to heighten the ability to monitor driver conditions via additional interior cameras to measure and analyze drowsiness, body position, facial posture, eye movement, and more. ADAS is the precursor to the autonomous vehicles of the future, providing the performance and accuracy foundation that will one day pave the road for truly handing over the wheel. meantime, the line is blurring between infotainment systems and ADAS. While such companies asFreescale and Texas Instruments are at the forefront of ADAS innovation, a wave of independentcompanies are entering the ring to provide ADAS solutions to existing vehicles, creating aburgeoning aftermarket.

Advancements under development continue to involve such areas as improved gesture andspeech recognition and proximity sensing. To date, Audi, BMW, Cadillac, Ford, GM, Hyundai, Kia,Lexus, MercedesBenz, Nissan, Toyota, and Volkswagen are actively implementing some form ofgesture technology into their automobiles. Fortunately for Kinect system users, the concept oftracking body movements will easily translate to hand gestures. For nonKinect users, there maybe a tougher learning curve.  Autonomous car efforts are already gaining ground, evident by such programs as Google’s selfdriving car.

Many legislative occurrences have already taken place that set up 2015 to be a stellar year forADAS and autonomous car advancement, including:

The US Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration(NHTSA) announced that all new vehicles less than 10,000 pounds must have rear viewcameras by May 2018.The Automotive Coalition for Traffic Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety

Administration has called for a Driver Alcohol Detection System for Safety (DADSS) programimplementing alcohol detection devices in all cars.

Several manufacturers are clearly on the bandwagon, driven to receive high rating scores in theNHTSA's New Car Assessment Program. Honda, for example, rolled out Honda Sensing includingthe firstever Honda application of a collision mitigation braking system and lane keeping assistsystem, and the first CRV adoption of adaptive cruise control and forward collision warning(FCW) on its 2015 Honda CRV Touring. The program already delivers a passengerside mirrorwith a fieldofview that is approximately four times greater, eliminating blind spot issues.

Honda is not alone. Toshiba announced expansion of its image recognition processors launchingthe TMPV760 series, with first device shipments in January 2015 and mass production expectedin December 2016. The 2015 Subaru Impreza, Outback, Legacy, and Forester all offer Subaru’sEyeSight Driver Assist Technology that includes adaptive cruise control, precollision breaking,and vehicle lane departure warning.

Practical applications are announced consistently. For example, Freescale is enabling a safervehicle through tirepressure monitoring in an extremely small package featuring low powerconsumption. Its FXTH87 tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) family weighs in at only 0.3grams and is 50% smaller than some competing products.  The company’s Smart ApplicationBlueprint for Rapid Engineering (SABRE) simplifies Ethernet audio video bridging deployment.

The Texas Instruments’ DRA75x processors are blurring the linebetween infotainment and informational ADAS. TI added signal processingfunctionality to DRA75x processors, augmenting infotainment andinformational ADAS features. Its “Jacinto 6 EP” delivers additionalperipherals and DSP horsepower so that designers can add features whilecontrolling system cost and the “Jacinto 6 Ex” improves performance andintegration with the use of two embedded vision engines (EVEs) thatdeliver simultaneous informational ADAS and infotainment functionalitieswithout compromise to either system.

In addition, TI’s recently announced TDA3x processor is the basis for an ADAS SoC that, for thefirst time, targets apps for front, rear, and surround view apps in entry and midlevel cars.

Renesas also recently announced an RCar Series for automotive, the RCar E2 automotiveSOCs and the new RCar E2 software development board optimize infotainment and displayaudio for entrylevel integrated cockpit systems.

One of the most important announcements, however, is Freescale’s plan to introduce an OpenComputing Language (OpenCL)based automotive development environment that will open themarket for car OEMs and tierone suppliers to bring ADAS technologies to a wider range ofvehicles faster, which again should have substantial impact in 2015. OpenCL is an open, royaltyfree standard for crossplatform, parallel programming that is maintained by the nonprofittechnology consortium Khronos Group. While a move to open standards is critical, the companyhas also challenged the industry to design safety from the ground up rather than reuse existingtechnology.

ABI Research estimates that the global ADAS market, which was worth $16.6 billion at the end of2012, will grow to more than $260 billion by the end of 2020. Activities in 2015 that will fuel thisgrowth include the establishment of design guidelines, coding standards, and reviews andprocesses with rigid accountability and traceability so that across the full supply chain, safety andquality issues are fully and rapidly addressed.

As much as ADAS assists, what they can’t do is detract. Drivers cannot find these systemsdifficult to use as they try to digest and react to increasing loads of complex data.  Simplicity andease of implementation are paramount at every step along the way.

Also watching: Wearable technology: This zoomy sensorbased technology is moving from fad to fashion andon to providing important functions. While it is predominately used in fitness applications so far, itis gaining ground in the medical arena. Expectations are that its use in remote diagnosis andmonitoring will mushroom over the next several years.
