The Adriatic-Ionian Region
 7 Countries (4 EU MS)
 2 MSFD marine subregions
EUSAIR (EU Strategy for the Adriatic and
Ionian Region) Action Plan being
finalized. MSP is expected to be an
important component of it
More than 12.000 km of coastline
From very shallow to deep (4000 m)
waters
 Adriatic: semi-enclosed dilution basin,
collecting a third of the freshwater
flowing into the Mediterranean
ADRiatic Ionian maritime spatial PLANningwww.adriplan.euProject co financed
by the European Union (DG MARE)
 Commonly-agreed approach to cross-
border MSP in the AIM, considered as a
whole (Pan-AIM view) and more
specifically through two Focus Areas
MSP priorities based on the best
knowledge available
 Concrete Planning and Management
options on Focus Areas and specific
problems
 Recommendations for the
implementation of cross-border MSP in
the AIM and other regions of the
Mediterranean

●
● Creation and discovery of metadata
● Upload of datasets and geospatial
services
● Visualization and composition of maps
● Interoperability through standard
services (OGC, INSPIRE)
● Modular and extensible

the Seas, ...)
● Management of users and permissions
● Possibility to interactively editing metadata, attributes, styles and geometry
● Possibility to develop MSP specific tools to help future implementation of plans

ADRiatic Ionian maritime spatial PLANningwww.adriplan.euProject co financed

1. MSP is just a tool to give reality to a (common) vision of our sea
2. MSP is real life. Make its added value evident to local (coastal) communities
3. Think transnationally but act regionally / locally
4. Data and knowledge gaps and difficulties in acquiring and harmonizing data.
Information are often there, but integration and capitalization from previous and
ongoing projects is still a challenge
5. MSP is an opportunity to connect the marine and the maritime world, essential
components of Blue Growth
6. Harmonization with other EU and Intl. policies (i.e. ICZM Protocol and MSFD)
7. Governance at national and international (EU, non EU)
level is foreseen as a key issue
8. MSP is a platform for international cooperation on R&I
