TEXT OF THE WELSH LAWS 1969110 Blwyddyn / Year Adroddiad Blynyddol / Annual Report 1968-69 Disgrifiad / Description A Welsh manuscript of 234 pages, on vellum, of the second half of the fourteenth century, containing a text of the Welsh Laws (NLW MS 20143A). The volume is to be identified with MS. Y. of Aneurin Owen: Ancient Laws and Institutes of Wales (1841), then described by the editor as 'presented by the Rev. Mr. Conybeare to the Literary Society of Neath' and subsequently reported by E[gerton] P[hillimore] (Y Cymmrodor, Vol. IX, p. 299) as 'lost since before 1860'. The text, almost entirely bicolumnar, agrees closely with 'Llyfr Cyfnerth' to the end of 'Cyfreithiau Llys' (Laws of Court) on p. 42, but thereafter shows little resemblance to any one existing manuscript, although it appears to be based largely on 'Llyfr Blegywryd', without however corresponding to the text order of the printed version of this code. The volume is rubricated, profusely in parts, with one miniature and several decorative capital letters in red and blue (or green) and pen-work in the contrasting colour. There are also, generally in the lower margins enclosing catchwords, a number of red-and-blue (or green) foliage designs and drawings mainly of grotesques (of which four are described respectively as of the four Evangelists), and there is one larger drawing in the same colours depicting the Crucifixion. Some of the pages are rubbed and the majority of the membranes are cockled, and the condition of the upper margin of about fifty membranes has variously deteriorated, occasionally with the loss or discolouration of pen-work. The volume is bound in calf and is lettered on the spine 'Leges Wallicae Saec 13 [sic]'. Nodiadau Schedule Available, Medieval Manuscripts.
