EVALUATION OF MDIs

ADVANTAGES & LIMITATIONS

CONCLUTION

INTRODUCTION:INTRODUCTION:

Definition: Products in which the Active drug along with propellant is packed under pressure which is released upon application.

Due to metered valve exact amount of drug is delivered

Mainly for asthma, COPD & heart diseases.

CONTAINERS: Aluminum is used as

material for preparing containers.

Internally coated with epoxy resin.

Having 20mm opening at the tip to receive metered valve.

These are seamless.

It is useful for the easy removal of the drug from the container.

Used for applying drug on a particular site which we desired.

PROPELLENT:Propellants in MDIs are liquefied

compressed gases that are in the gaseous phase at atmospheric pressure, but form liquids when compressed.

Commonly used propellants.

Damage to ozone layer.

EVALUATION OF MDIsEVALUATION OF MDIs:: Dose uniformity over the entire contents. Leakage rate. Total number of discharges per container. Spray pattern. Particle-size distribution. Formulation factors. Component design.

MDIs combine the practical benefits of small size, portability, convenience, and unobtrusiveness, and are relatively inexpensive.

The multi-dose capability means that a dose is immediately available when required to treat a wheezing attack.

Some patients suffer the so-called cold-Freon effect , in which the arrival of the cold propellant spray on the back of the throat causes the patient to stop inhaling.
