EXECUTIVE SUMMARY  AgriProFocus is a growing network consisting of over 4,000 multiple stakeholders dedicated to supporting farmers who have the entrepreneurial drive to make their resources and social capital productive and sustainable. It links different stakeholders (farmer organizations,  NGOs, financial institutions, research institutions, private & public sector actors, the Dutch and other internat ional  development  agencies )  in the agri business sector and also has an online platform that features information, a forum for discussion, a market place all aimed at enhancing Farmer entrepreneurship. The members of the network are coordinated around innovation communities (ICs), the youth innovation community inclusive.  

AgriProFocus Uganda IC youth in agribusiness in partnership with SNV, Inter Church Organization for Development Cooperation (ICCO) and Uganda Youth Forum organized and facilitated the northern region youth in agribusiness inspirational conference from 23rd to 24th April 2015 at Lira Hotel. The objectives were (I) to motivate and mentor youth both male and female to engage in Agribusiness (ii) to share existing and emerging agribusiness opportunities for youth both male and female in Uganda (iii) provide a platform for networking, product promotion and making business deals (iv) to increase the appreciation of living a healthy life for wealth creation through agribusiness  The conference attracted 300 attendees. There were 169 male and 110 female participants as well as 30 exhibitors.    The participants were ranging from farmers, seed companies, and agro in‐put dealers, media, Government Institutions, non‐governmental organizations, financial institutions, academia and members of Parliament. The conference drew youth from Acholi, lango and west Nile sub regions and a few from Central, western and eastern regions.   The conference was graced by district leaders like Mr. Anthony Ojuka, District Youth Councilor and secretary for production–Lira district. In his opening remarks, he put emphasis on the importance of attitude, focus, foresight, bulk marketing, and value addition in agri business.   Woman MP for lira Honorable Atim Joy Ongom in her key note speech urged the youth to embrace value addition, adopt multi‐cropping (include coffee), change attitude towards agriculture, exploit opportunities availed by Civil Society Organizations and Government programs. The Deputy Resident District Commissioner for Lira, Mr. Mwaka Emmanuel Lutukomoi, in his closing remarks  urged the youth to take immediate action in line with all the inspiration they had received, endeavor to stay healthy and work hard because Government is committed to supporting them.  

As a result of participation in the inspirational conference, 27 participants (25 male and 2 female) pledged to start up their own agribusiness projects in different enterprises like; piggery, poultry, bee keeping and horticulture. As part of the way forward it was suggested that these participants would be registered and followed up by AgriProFocus coordination. They would then share their experiences at the next regional youth inspirational conference in 2016.

1.0 INTRODUCTION 

1.1 Background  

Whereas  Agriculture  accounts  for  22%  of  Gross  Domestic  Product  (GDP),   it is evident that there is an ageing farmer population in most of the regions in Uganda hence the need for young farmers to take up the mantle.  In the quest to commercialize agriculture, the Government and other key actors need to provide productive alternatives for the engagement of youth into Agribusiness. It is in relation with this cause that AgriProFocus Youth innovation community in Agribusiness in partnership with SNV, ICCO and Uganda Youth Forum organized the northern region youth in agribusiness inspirational conference from 23rd to 24th April 2015 at Lira Hotel.   

The theme of the event was “inspiring the youth into agribusiness as a means of employment to foster development in Uganda” while the slogan was “Youth go Agric, it pays!  The conference drew youth mainly from Acholi, lango and west Nile sub regions and a few from Central, western and eastern regions.  169 male and 110 female participants attended the event.  

1.2 Objectives and Methodology  

i. To motivate and mentor youth both male and female to engage in Agribusiness ii. To share existing and emerging agribusiness opportunities for youth both male and 

female in Uganda iii. Provide a platform for networking, product promotion and making business deal iv. To increase the appreciation of living a healthy life for wealth creation through 

agribusiness      Methodology entailed presentations, plenary, exhibitions and business networking as well as product pitching outside   

1.3WelcomeRemarksMoses Otim from AYINET(Africa Youth Initiative Network), Jane Acola from Radio Wa and Hudson Ogwali from DETREC ( Development Training  and Research Center), the moderators for the event welcomed the participants and thereafter invited Ms. Jennifer Nakiyemba, chairperson IC YIA from ICCO ( Inter Church Organization for Development Cooperation)  and Rolf Schinkel from AgriProFocus, Network Facilitator‐Netherlands to deliver their welcome remarks. 

1.3.1 Welcome Remarks by Jenipher Nakiyemba ‐ICCO  Jenipher Nakiyemba the chairperson for youth in Agri business welcomed participants   to the regional youth inspirational conference and highlighted the theme and objectives of the youth conference.  She also gave an overview of the Innovation Community of youth in Agribusiness. (IC YIA). 

AgriProFocus is a growing network that links agribusiness professionals around various themes and innovation communities. Youth in Agribusiness Innovation Community (IC) is an agribusiness innovation Community that aims at inspiring and mentoring the Youth in Uganda to take up agribusiness for improved livelihoods. This is achieved through; experience and knowledge sharing through organized inspirational conferences and show casing at Regional and National levels. The Community is mostly

comprised of organizations and Institutions that have youth in agribusiness as their focal point in their daily undertakings. Currently, the youth and young people constitute 78% of Uganda’s population. The youth unemployment rate stands at 83% (World Bank report, 2008), the second highest after Niger in the world. In addition, focus on youth in Agribusiness fits well within the mission and aims of AgriProFocus Uganda. Therefore, AgriProFocus Uganda together with her partners agreed to jointly identify possible areas of collaboration and joint action on motivating youth into agribusiness. The youth IC is led by ICCO whose contribution to the initiative is through the Agri skills for you (AS4Y) program that is funded by the Netherlands Embassy.  Other  partner organizations include  (Inter church Organization for Development Cooperation), , SNV,Uganda Youth Forum (UYF), Young Farmers Coalition (YOFACO), Miss Uganda Foundation, FINAFRICA, Youth Agribusiness Network Africa (YAAN), Trias‐Uganda, Community Efforts for Local Economic Development (CELED) and Development and Research Associates (DARAS) , .  She concluded her remarks by wishing the participants fruitful deliberations. 

1.3.2 Welcome Remarks by Rolf Schinkel Rolf Schinkel (AgriProFocus network facilitator) gave an overview of AgriProFocus and highlighted the mission and background. He emphasized the importance of networking and advocacy in influencing Government, private sector and NGOs to consider youth in their initiatives and plans. Networking enables one to make new friends acquire solutions to challenges and offers inspiration from success stories. Rolf advised youth at the event to learn from others and to become part of the ever growing AgriProFocus Network. He concluded his remarks by acknowledging ICCO, SNV, and Uganda Youth forum for having collaborated with AgriProFocus to make the event a success. 

1.4 Opening Remarks Honorable Anthony Ojuka, Lira District Youth Councilor and secretary for production, represented the LC V chairman and he thanked the organizers of the event given that most stakeholders fear to mobilize youth because they face challenges in accessing funds, the assumption is that youth have high demands and require quick results. He said that there is a need to devise means of showing the rest of the world that there is a change in mindset among the youth. Mr. Ojuka advised the youth to prioritize value addition and marketing because they are key components of agribusiness. He then went ahead to emphasize the importance of positive attitude, focus, foresight, bulk marketing, and value addition in agri business and declared the conference open. 

1.5 Testimonies of Successful Youth Farmers: During this session Odong Markfat a pig farmer and Opiyo Richard an agro‐input dealer both beneficiaries of AS4Y program shared their success stories. This was purposed to share a local content that brings out exactly what the successful  youth farmers go through and how they over come certain challenges using local solutions. This was inspiring because generally the youth could identify and were familiar with the local examples.  

1.5.1 Odong Markfat  19 year old youth from Gulu is a pig farmer with over 200 pigs. He went through the training with Agri skills for you (AS4Y) by ICCO and was selected by AVSI to participate in Fin Africa’s business skills training which inspired him to start an agribusiness center. “I used to earn about 300,000Ugx to 500,000Ugx after every three months but I was able to record revenue of over 1,000,000Ugx in just two months. I have recruited over 260 out growers and I am extending to Nwoya District. I have also trained over 60 youth at a fee of 20,000UgX. I offer veterinary and agriculture consultation services too.  I am yet to attain my vision of being the leading pig farmer

in region” said Markfat.  

1.5.2 Opio Richard A 28year old Richard Opiyo said “I own Camkwoki farmers’ center that comprises of an agro vet shop, mobile money and phone charging services. I set it up in 2012. I also own seven acres of land where I use four acres of the land to cultivate vegetables, that is (tomatoes and cabbages) and for demonstration plots.  I supply my vegetables to four schools and Uchumi supermarket –Gulu branch. I have earned 7 million UGX out of 1 acre demonstration plot for cabbages and out of a 6m by 5m plot with tomatoes and watermelon I have earned 3 million UGX. I am a seed agent for many seed companies such as Balton, Victoria seeds, E. Africa seed. I also offer apprenticeship training for students examined by Directorate of Industrial Training in horticulture. In order to enhance my business I embarked on networking with the youth that I have trained, I work with ten groups (comprising of 30 members each with 40% females and 60% women). Another secret of my success is giving discounts to my clients and integrity to the extent that I can obtain my stock on credit”. 

1.6 Key Note Speech  Patrick Ogwang the director of AFSRT invited Woman member of Parliament for lira Honorable Atim Joy Ongom to deliver the key note speech.  Honorable Joy Ongom applauded the youth for turning up in big numbers and the organizers for choosing an appropriate theme for the youth conference.  She strongly cautioned the youth to desist from being lazy and harboring the perspective that agriculture is tedious and dirty. 

Honorable Joy Ongom urged the youth to embrace value addition, adopt multi‐cropping (include coffee), change attitude towards agriculture, exploit opportunities availed by CSOs and Government programs such as the youth livelihood fund and operation wealth creation. She concluded by pledging to offer free maize seed to interested youth in Lira and urging the youth to leave the conference transformed. 

2.0 PRESENTATIONS AND PLENARY   This session entailed presentations, plenary discussions as well as generating recommendations and way forward. It was moderated by Moses Otim  

2.1 Presentation on an Enterprising Farmer In his presentation, Bless Agume the head of the training and mentorship program at FINA AFRICA and also Council member of ICCO challenged the youth to take on an entrepreneurial approach to agriculture and exploit the various opportunities along the agriculture value chain..   Over 60% of the people in Uganda are relatively poor, out of the 60%, 80% are farmers. Farming has been deemed as an unattractive venture because majority of farmers are subsistence and take long to earn the little that is paid to them when they sell. This is one of the reasons why youth deem agriculture as unprofitable and attractive.  On the contrary an enterprising farmer has a better story to tell because they combine their  interest  in agriculture with  business, and  exploits other areas in the value chain.

I lost my entire piggery project with piglets obtained from NAADS to swine fever, what advice do you have? The pork joint we had also closed down 

   Foresight is every essential for every farmer. It is important to carry out  vaccination and treatment, you can sustain the piggery by buying pigs from others or diversify  to goat , go into value addition 

2.  Please differentiate  between  youth capital venture fund, youth livelihood fund and youth graduation scheme   

  

 

Youth education loan scheme is for youth at university level   particularly sciences; though one has to apply for it. Youth capital venture; this was being accessed through banks yet the banks had stringent conditions (collateral), this was renamed to the youth livelihood scheme. This requires forming groups and then apply ) you utilize it and then refund the money ,  Operation wealth creation is under NAADS ( youth can also benefit from it)   

3.  We are a group of 20 youth who applied for the youth livelihood program. We submitted a budget of 12.5 million but only approved 8.6 m after assessing of the project. We were also required to hire someone to draft a business plan. 

A group of 20 youth cannot fail to liaise funds to  pay someone to draft the  project proposal 

 

4.  Most youth have little knowledge about youth livelihood fund    

     

  

I am  required to give an accountability of the youth livelihood funds  

In September 2014 a total of  16.4 million was released , expenditure  for this was on  beneficiary selection, training , sensitization stationery , communication, vehicle maintenance,  photocopy , project desk appraisal, monitoring and technical support at district and sub county, radio talk shows . 268 million is what is left for that  the actual fund ;  you should  follow up relevant  authorities to sensitize fellow youth ,

5.   Are there initiatives that the elderly can benefit from?  

 

 

There is registration going on so as to obtain seeds and benefit from Government initiatives, what is your take on this? 

Last year I gave seeds to women groups, widows and I will also do the same this year if you ask for it. . I encourage the elderly to network and exploit other crops like passion fruits , hot pepper  

    Do not wait for that , go ahead and they will  find you 

6.   Issue directed to Bless Agume 

I have been practicing traditional agriculture but  , after your advice, I plan to take to take on entrepreneurial approach because I have  lost a lot of money in farming , and  to middlemen 

 It is so disturbing to see how much we depend on other people.  Good to see that people have been inspired. Stop waiting for free things; endeavor to deliver even during off season. if each of us  just employs 10 people , it would  be commendable  

2.2.2 Recommendations and Action Points   This session was facilitated by Facilitated by Hudson. Day one’s events were concluded by visits to the   exhibition stalls, networking and making business deals.  

• Avoid extravagance, be economical/ plan the expenditure , save much and spend less   • Stop waiting  for large amounts of  capital, start with the little that exists  • Develop  business plans  , do cost a benefit analysis and record keeping  • Implement the action plans  • Be creative and innovative , be  accountable to yourself and your creator  daily  

(relate this to YARIC) • Have  a vision and pursue it , be hungry for information on markets, prices , eliminate 

middle men ,  • Identification of important stakeholders in the value chain  is vital ‐‐ why?? • Do continuous self evaluation , believe in oneself , avoid laziness , hard work  • Determination , participation, concentration , avoid dependency syndrome • Shift away from one step in the value chain i.e. digging and  think big , • Exploit all available  opportunities in the different value chain  Jennifer Nakiyemba “whatever you get to do, do it with your hands, head and heart! Dream Big but remember to wake up from the dream, failure to do so will hinder realization of the dream”

DAY TWO After a word of prayer and a recap of day one’s events Hudson called upon youth that had been inspired and were willing to start up agribusiness projects to register with him. He said this group of people will be followed by AgriProFocus Youth IC and will share their testimonies in the next youth event in 2016 while those who had shared their’ during the conference  will exhibit their products. 

Jenipher Nakiyemba invited  the participants to leave their remarks on the wall of wisdom as indicated in the picture below

She then invited Rolf Schinkel, the AgriProFocus Uganda Network Facilitator to give his farewell remarks. 

Rolf stated that he was inspired by the participants’ enthusiasm, fantastic success stories and positive reactions. He pledged to do attend the youth event in 2016 in order to witness the progress. He concluded his remarks by thanking the participants for their active participation and the organizers for the good work.

2.3 Testimonies of Successful Youth Farmers Day2 This session was moderated by Jane who invited the youth to share their success stories  

2.3.1 Joyce Atuhairwe  Joyce Atuhairwe and her associates formed (DARAS) Development and Research Associates  in 2008 to provide a wide range of services in the horticulture value chain.  “We began our journey in farming by preparing a coffee nursery bed and we supplied NAADS in Bushenyi and Mbarara however delayed payments forced us to devise other means.  

We ventured into fruits and vegetables in 2011 by planting an acre of hot pepper in Bushenyi District using 1.5 m but the start was not good.  We lacked knowledge on pest control, post harvest handling and packaging. Currently, hot pepper has become our major source of income and we have expanded the farm to 6 acres per season. We have contracts with exporters and we are therefore not cheated by the middlemen and we are able to get 48,000,000 million per season. Using those proceeds, we have been able to expand to other farm enterprises. We have now moved to other ventures like Okra, Chilies, Sweet pepper, cherry tomatoes etc depending on our market analysis.  Other services that we offer include product consolidation where we collect fresh fruits and vegetables and sale directly to exporters, we train farmers on enterprise development, pest and disease control, post harvest handling, we provide extension services to individual farmers, farmer groups and cooperatives.  We contract commercial farmers/farmer associates and sale their produce at a commission, these are ten at the moment” said Joyce.  

2.3.2 Frederick Ocen Frederick Ocen is a poultry farmer from Gulu who was inspired by his mentor from Jinja. He acquired skills in poultry management by looking managing his mentor’s poultry farm of 1000 birds.  “I used my savings of 1.8 million UGX after school to start up a poultry farm of 200 birds and sold them after six weeks. From this venture I was able to raise money to fund my wedding and tuition fees at Arapai where I graduated as a livestock officer. In 2014 I bought a total 0f 800 broilers and once they had matured I sold the hens at 20,000 UGX and cocks at 25,000UGX. I used the proceeds from this to purchase 2 acres close to town and another piece of land worth 10 million shillings since I needed more land for expansion. 

Since I have a certificate in feed formulation and yet the quality of feeds in Gulu was not good, I ventured into mixing feeds in December 2014, I supply feeds to four farms in Southern Sudan that order in tons. My daily sales from all my ventures are approximately 500,000UGX   of which the profit ranges from   180‐200,000 UGX.  I am now able to pay fees for my siblings. I offer consultancy services due to my hands on experience (e.g. I offer farm planning services at a minimum fee for 50,000UGX).  I train groups of poultry farmers in Gulu for free with the condition that they buy feeds from me and I also liaise with eth district veterinary officer to go on air over the radio to train farmers in poultry” elaborated Ocen. 

2.3.3 Jane Fioxy Jane Fioxy from Zombo District is a senior two drop out and a mother whose initial aspiration was to be a disco Jockey and dancer. However after trying out a few jobs in Kampala and attending a two year course at YMCA in food catering, she decided to venture into poultry farming. 

“I attended the training by ZOA at my sub county where I learnt how to vaccinate birds and mix food. I bought my first bird at 10,000 UGX from a drunkard, after two weeks it was able to lay 14 eggs. These also hatched and currently the poultry farm has 54 local birds.  Zoa has given me ten improved ones to

add into my farm. I want to stock more birds and become a commercial farmer. I have trained two people and they are working at my farm and I plan to train more. I also want to network with more poultry farmers so as to advance my skills” said Jane.  

2.4 Presentations This session entailed presentations on “Youth and Agribusiness Financing” presented by  Paul from Centenary Bank , as well as  “Youth and agriculture  value addition (product branding and packaging )” presented by Ambrose Angulo  from Ambrosoli wonders. 

Ambrose elaborated on qualities of a good brand, importance of packaging and branding. He encouraged the youth to embrace branding and packaging in order to attract more customers and earn more profit. Paul from Centenary bank presented to the details of the agribusiness loans available, their main features, basic requirements and the credit cycle.   

2.5 Plenary Session, Recommendations and Action Points 

2.5.1 Plenary Session   Issue   Response  1.   Why do you banks require a guarantor 

before offering a loan  It is a background check, an assessment to find out whether the client is credible  

2.  What procedures does one have to follow in order to get their brands fully approved by UNBS? 

It is not a prerequisite to get approval in order to brand your product. UNBS’ approval mark enables your brand to qualify for greater market coverage. Do not copy other people’s brands so as to avoid competition. 

3.  Frederick Ocen, how do you handle the labor constraints?  

I have four people, 2 people at milling machine and 2 at the poultry farm. I also have 5 university students attached to me, during holidays I have  interns from vocational institutions attached to my farm 

4.  I harvested about 700 metric tons of maize but marketing is a challenge; the middlemen are cheats. I have tried marketing at the boarders like Malaba and   Nakuru  to no avail 

Through networking, a solution to the market challenge can be obtained. ‐AgriProFocus does business brokering , and offers a market  place where buyers and sellers interact, you can also  exploit  opportunities at  such events

Is biotechnology the solution to agriculture in Uganda? 

How  can partnership be facilitated with the farmers  in western region in order to solve marketing issues

2.5.2 Recommendations and Action Points Day 2 To the youth  

• Be flexible in agribusiness and be open to advice   • Networking with those within your sector in order to enhance your capacity  • Exchange visits are useful and should be considered • Since quitters never win and winners never quit , face your challenges  squarely • Learn by doing and not seeing , aim higher , sacrifice your time in order to achieve your goals  • Networking is vital : Learn to share information, discuss  with those that have the experience , 

avoid greed and selfishness  • Acknowledge your background/ past,  have a clear vision , be a positive thinker and be 

courageous  

To AgriProFocus for follow up  

• Next year around the same season another youth event will be organized in the Northern region.  

• During next years’ event,  youth should be educated on patent rights , the importance of  respecting the copyright and patent rights   

• Disseminate information from the conference  to other females who have not been able to attend. Youth from Alebtong , Oduke  and other rural areas  find it hard to access this kind of information so means of dissemination should be devised   

 4.0 EXHIBITION AND FEEDBACK 4.1 Feedback This session entails feedback from presenters, organizers, participants and exhibitors. The Idea of such quotes/testimonies is to see how the events/activities have impacted on the  individuals being interviewed personally. 

PARTICIPANT: “I am a pig farmer with 7 pigs currently. This event has inspired me to expand my piggery as a business and I am determined to improve my income (next time it would be nice to know his/her age and how much he is currently earning and what his projections are) by end of 2015” Drawru Jemilee‐0773 997 607. (Also good to find out how many contacts he has made that will help him in his new plan for the business 

EXHIBITOR: “The event has defied the general perception that youth   attend such events just to pass time however many youth have bought business directories including those that do not have businesses. This indicates that they have truly inspired” Solomon Kalema, AgaSha ‐0788 380 239. (For an exhibitor it would be great to find out how much they have made in sales on that day and business contacts

4.2 Exhibition and Closure  It would be nice to give an overview of how many exhibitors they were and the categories of services they represented. All the exhibitors were given a chance to pitch their stands during this session. For details of exhibitors please see list of exhibitors on page  

The Deputy Resident District Commissioner for Lira, Mwaka Emmanuel Lutukomoi, shared his life experience with the youth during the closing session. He urged them to embrace the business plant canvas and pledged   Government’s commitment to support the youth.  

He further on encouraged them to think and act now in line with all the inspiration they had received, endeavor to stay healthy and work hard. He then concluded his remarks by handing certificates to organizers and exhibitors at the event. Here below is a pictorial of the session.
