- وهي رحلة التدبر والتقرب الى اهلل: فكلما نظرت الى

الكعبة الم�شرفة تفكرت في البيت المعم�ر الذي ه� في

ال�شماء وان هناك مالئكة يط�ف�ن ح�له كما تط�ف انت

ح�ل الكعبة، وكلما �شربت من ماء زمزم تفكرت في مياه

الجنة وتاأملت في بئر ماوؤه ي�شقي الماليين وال ين�شب.

وكلما رميت الجمرات ايقنت انك ترمي ال�شر بكل رم�زه.

وقد الغربي، ال�سوم�ل ب��سم اأي�س� االإقليم يعرف هذا

التق�سيم ف��ي وي�ستهر ،1954 منذ اإثيوبي� اإل��ى ان�سم

اإقليم اأو الخ�م�ض االإق��ل��ي��م ب��سم االإث��ي��وب��ي االإداري

االإقليم هذا وتقطن اأوغ�ديني�.

و�سمحت لهم ب�إق�مة تدريب�ت ومع�سكرات على اأرا�سيه�.

اإقليم جنوب غربي ال�سوم�ل

من جزء االآن “اأنفدي” وهو ب��سم االإقليم هذا يعرف

كيني� �سمته وقد غ�ري�س�، وع��سمته الكينية االأرا�سي

اإلي اأرا�سيه� منذ 1963 بعد اتف�ق اأرو�س�. وقبل ا�ستقالل

كيني� عن الت�ج البريط�ني، اتفقت االأحزاب ال�سوم�لية

يحدد ا�ستفت�ء اإج���راء على ال�سوم�ل غ��رب��ي ب�إقليم

و�سعهم، فك�نت نتيجته اإعالن االن�سم�م اإلى ال�سوم�ل،

ف�ألغي اال�ستفت�ء واأ�سبحت المنطقة جزءا من كيني�.

اإقليم العفر والعي�سى

ويعرف ب�ل�سوم�ل الفرن�سي، ومنذ ا�ستقالله عن فرن�س�

�سنة 1977 اأ�سبح االإقليم معروف� ب��سم جيبوتي. والعفر

والعي�سى هم� القبيلت�ن االأ�س��سيت�ن بهذا االإقليم. وتعتبر

جزءا االجتم�عية والبنية والت�ريخ اللغة بحكم جيبوتي

من ال�سوم�ل، غير اأنه� ومنذ ا�ستقالله� اأ�سبحت ع�سوا

من ذلك وغير المتحدة االأم��م وفي العربية ب�لج�معة

انطلق حذيفة العدوي في معركة اليرموك يبحث عن ابن عم له، ومعه �سربة م�ء.

وبعد اأن وجده جريح� ق�ل له: اأ�سقيك؟ ف�أ�س�ر اإليه ب�لموافقة. وقبل اأن ي�سقيه �سمع�

رجال يقول: اآه، ف�أ�س�ر ابن عم حذيفة اإليه؛ ليذهب ب�سربة الم�ء اإلى الرجل الذي

يت�ألم، فذهب اإليه حذيفة، فوجده ه�س�م بن الع��ض. ولم� اأراد اأن ي�سقيه �سمع� رجال اآخر يقول:

اآه، ف�أ�س�ر ه�س�م لينطلق اإليه حذيفة ب�لم�ء، فذهب اإليه حذيفة فوجده قد م�ت، فرجع ب�لم�ء

ل كل واحد منهم اأخ�ه اإلى ه�س�م فوجده قد م�ت، فرجع اإلى ابن عمه فوجده قد م�ت. فقد ف�س

على نف�سه، واآثره ب�سربة م�ء.

•••فلب�سه� �سلى اهلل عليه واأعطته بردة هدية، و�سلم، الر�سول �سلى اهلل عليه اإلى امراأة ج�ءت

اأح�سن م� ر�سول اهلل، ي� وق�ل: منه، اأ�سح�به، فطلبه� اأحد وراآه اإليه�، وك�ن محت�ج� و�سلم،

هذه.. اك�سنيه�. فخلعه� النبي �سلى اهلل عليه و�سلم واأعط�ه� اإي�ه. فق�ل ال�سح�بة للرجل: م�

اأح�سنت، لب�سه� النبي �سلى اهلل عليه و�سلم محت�ج� اإليه�، ثم �س�ألته وعلمت اأنه ال يرد اأحدا.

فق�ل الرجل: اإني واهلل م� �س�ألته الألب�سه�، اإنم� �س�ألته لتكون كفني. البخ�ري. واحتفظ الرجل

بثوب الر�سول �سلى اهلل عليه و�سلم؛ فك�ن كفنه.

•••ج�ء رجل ج�ئع اإلى الر�سول �سلى اهلل عليه و�سلم وهو في الم�سجد، وطلب منه طع�م�، ف�أر�سل

�سلى اهلل عليه و�سلم ليبحث عن طع�م في بيته، فلم يجد اإال الم�ء، فق�ل ر�سول اهلل �سلى اهلل

عليه و�سلم:)من ي�سيف هذا الليلة رحمه اهلل(، فق�ل رجل من االأن�س�ر: اأن� ي� ر�سول اهلل.

واأخذ ال�سيف اإلى بيته، ثم ق�ل المراأته: هل عندك �سيء؟ فق�لت: ال، اإال قوت �سبي�ني، فلم يكن

اأن ت�سغل اأوالده� عن الطع�م وتنومهم، اأوالده� ال�سغ�ر، ف�أمره� عنده� اإال طع�م قليل يكفي

لل�سيف، طع�م من عنده� م� كل وتقدم ال�سراج)الم�سب�ح(، تطفئ ال�سيف يدخل وعندم�

واأكل معه، ي�أكل اأنه ي�سعره حتى الظالم في معه وجل�ض لل�سيف، الطع�م االأن�س�ري وو�سع

ال�سيف حتى �سبع، وب�ت الرجل وزوجته واأوالدهم� ج�ئعين.

وفي ال�سب�ح، ذهب الرجل و�سيفه اإلى النبي �سلى اهلل عليه و�سلم، فق�ل للرجل:)قد عجب اهلل

من �سنيعكم� ب�سيفكم� الليلة( م�سلم. ونزل فيه قول اهلل تع�لى: {ويوؤثرون على اأنف�سهم ولو ك�ن

بهم خ�س��سة} الح�سر 9 . والخ�س��سة: �سدة الح�جة.

•••ما ه� االإيثار؟

يبذله، لم� احتي�جه برغم ح�جته، على الن��ض من غيره ح�جة االإن�س�ن يقدم اأن هو االإيث�ر

فقد يجوع لي�سبع غيره، ويعط�ض ليروي �سواه. ق�ل اهلل �سلى اهلل عليه و�سلم:)ال يوؤمن اأحدكم

م� ع�ئ�سة -ر�سي اهلل عنه�-: ال�سيدة وتقول عليه. متفق لنف�سه( م� يحب الأخيه حتى يحب

�سبع ر�سول اهلل �سلى اهلل عليه و�سلم

الدني�، ف�رق حتى متوالية اأي�م ثالثة

ولو �سئن� ل�سبعن�، ولكنن� كن� نوؤثر على

اأنف�سن�.

ف�شل االإيثار:

وجعلهم االإي��ث���ر، اأه��ل على اهلل اأثنى

من المفلحين، فق�ل تع�لى:{ويوؤثرون

خ�س��سة بهم ك�ن ولو اأنف�سهم على

هم ف���أول��ئ��ك نف�سه ���س��ح ي���وق وم���ن

المفلحون} الح�سر 9.

االأثرة:

االأثرة هي حب النف�ض، وتف�سيله� على

بعد به� االهتم�م ينبغي التي االأم���ور من

هل العمل؛ قبول م�س�ألة عمل: ب�أي القي�م

كبرى، ولكنه� ال تتم اإال بنعمة اأخرى اأعظم منه�، وهي

واإذا علم العبد اأن كثيرا من االأعم�ل ترد على �س�حبه�

الأ�سب�ب كثيرة ك�ن اأهم م� يهمه معرفة اأ�سب�ب القبول،

ف�إذا وجده� في نف�سه فليحمد اهلل، وليعمل على الثب�ت

اأول فليكن يجده� ل��م واإن عليه�، اال���س��ت��م��رار على

اهتم�مه من االآن: العمل به� بجد واإخال�ض هلل تع�لى.

�أ�سباب قبول �الأعمال �ل�سالحة

1-��ست�سغار �لعمل وعدم �لعجب و�لغرور به:

ي��وؤدي ال كله عمله ف���إن وق��دم عمل مهم� االإن�س�ن اإن

�سكر نعمة من النعم التي في ج�سده من �سمع اأو ب�سر

اأو غيره�، وال يقوم ب�سيء من حق اهلل تب�رك اأو نطق

وتع�لى، ف�إن حقه فوق الو�سف، ولذلك ك�ن من �سف�ت

يرونه� وال اأعم�لهم، ي�ست�سغرون اأنهم المخل�سين

�سيئ�، حتى ال يعجبوا به�، وال ي�سيبهم الغرور فيحبط

اأجرهم، ويتك��سلوا عن االأعم�ل ال�س�لحة. ومم� يعين

العمل: معرفة اهلل تع�لى، وروؤية نعمه، ا�ست�سغ�ر على

وتذكر الذنوب والتق�سير.

اأن بعد بذلك نبيه يو�سي تع�لى اهلل اأن كيف ولنت�أمل

المدثر * قم اأيه� تع�لى: {ي� ب�أمور عظ�م فق�ل اأمره

ف�أنذر * وربك فكبر * وثي�بك فطهر * والرجز ف�هجر

* وال تمنن ت�ستكثر}. فمن مع�ني االآية م� ق�له الح�سن

الب�سري: ال تمنن بعملك على ربك ت�ستكثره.

2- �لخوف من رد �لعمل وعدم قبوله:

اأ�سد العمل بقبول يهتمون ال�س�لح ال�سلف ك���ن لقد

االهتم�م، حتى يكونوا في ح�لة خوف واإ�سف�ق، ق�ل اهلل

عز وجل في و�سف ح�لهم تلك:}والذين يوؤتون م� اآتوا

وقلوبهم وجلة اأنهم اإلى ربهم راجعون * اأولئك ي�س�رعون

�س�بقون{)الموؤمنون:60،27(. له� وهم الخيرات في

الذين ب�أنهم و�سلم عليه اهلل �سلى النبي ف�سره� وقد

يتقبل ال اأن ويخ�فون ويت�سدقون وي�سلون ي�سومون

)كونوا ق�ل: اأنه عنه اهلل ر�سي علي عن واأث��ر منهم.

ت�سمعوا األم ب�لعمل. منكم اهتم�م� اأ�سد العمل لقبول

اهلل عز وجل يقول: {اإنم� يتقبل اهلل من المتقين} )

الم�ئدة:27(.

3- �لرجاء وكثرة �لدعاء:

وهو نظيره من بد ال اإذ يكفي، ال اهلل من الخوف اإن

الرج�ء، الأن الخوف بال رج�ء ي�سبب القنوط والي�أ�ض،

وكله� اهلل، مكر من االأم��ن ي�سبب خوف بال والرج�ء

اأمور مذمومة تقدح في عقيدة االإن�س�ن وعب�دته.

ورج�ء قبول العمل -مع الخوف من رده- يورث االإن�س�ن

وعندم� اإيم�نه. فيزيد تع�لى، هلل وخ�سوع� توا�سع�

يتحقق الرج�ء ف�إن االإن�س�ن يرفع يديه �س�ئال اهلل قبول

عمله؛ ف�إنه وحده الق�در على ذلك، وهذا م� فعله اأبون�

ال�سالة عليهم� واإ�سم�عيل الرحمن خليل اإبراهيم

وال�سالم، كم� حكى اهلل عنهم في بن�ئهم الكعبة فق�ل:

{واإذ يرفع اإبراهيم القواعد من البيت واإ�سم�عيل ربن�

تقبل من� اإنك اأنت ال�سميع العليم} )البقرة:127(.

4- كثرة �ال�ستغفار:

من بد ال ف�إنه عمله تكميل على االإن�س�ن مهم� حر�ض

النق�ض والتق�سير، ولذلك علمن� اهلل تع�لى كيف نرفع

فق�ل العب�دات، بعد ب�ال�ستفغ�ر ف�أمرن� النق�ض هذا

حيث من اأفي�سوا {ث��م الحج: من��سك ذك��ر اأن بعد

رحيم} غفور اهلل اإن اهلل وا�ستغفروا الن��ض اأف��ض

الع�مرة حي�ته يختم اأن نبيه واأم��ر )ال��ب��ق��رة:199(.

} فق�ل: ب�ال�ستغف�ر �سبيله في والجه�د اهلل بعب�دة

اإذا ج�ء ن�سر اهلل والفتح * وراأيت الن��ض يدخلون في

دين اهلل اأفواج� * ف�سبح بحمد ربك وا�ستغفره اإنه ك�ن

�سبح�نك ( و�سجوده: ركوعه في يقول فك�ن تواب�}.

البخ�ري. رواه لي( اغفر اللهم وبحمدك، ربن� اللهم

وك�ن �سلى اهلل عليه و�سلم يقول بعد كل �سالة فيقول:

)اأ�ستغفر اهلل( ثالث مرات.

5-�الإكثار من �الأعمال �ل�سالحة:

�سق�ية اإل��ى تحت�ج طيبة، �سجرة ال�س�لح العمل اإن

من واإن ثم�ره�، وت��وؤت��ي وتثبت، تنمو حتى ورع���ي��ة،

ف���إن بعده�، الح�سنة فعل الح�سنة: قبول ع��الم���ت

الح�سنة تقول: اأختي اأختي. وهذا من رحمة اهلل تب�رك

وتع�لى وف�سله؛ اأنه يكرم عبده اإذا فعل ح�سنة، واأخل�ض

فيه� هلل اأنه يفتح له ب�ب� اإلى ح�سنة اأخرى؛ ليزيده منه

قرب�.

اأعم�لن� نتع�هد اأن االآن نحت�جه� ق�سية اأه��م واإن

ال�س�لحة التي كن� نعمله�، فنح�فظ عليه�، ونزيد عليه�

الحديث تقدم التي اال�ستق�مة وهذه هي ف�سيئ�. �سيئ�

عنه�.

األعمال الصالحة بعد الحج

ومضات من حياة إمام األنبياء)4( �سفاته �لخلقية:

ظنه باهلل:

– النبي �سمعت ق���ل عنه- اهلل –ر�سي ج�بر عن

يقول: اأي�م بثالثة موته قبل و�سلم- عليه اهلل �سلى

تع�لى« اإال وهو يح�سن الظن ب�هلل اأحدكم »ال يموتن

رواه م�سلم.

اهلل عب�د اأق��رب و�سلم- عليه اهلل –�سلى والنبي

اإلى اهلل واأزك�هم عنده، وهو الذي �سبق اإلى كل خير

ومن اأ�سح�به يو�سي وك���ن ف�سل، كل من واقترب

بعدهم ب�لظن الح�سن ب�هلل عز وجل.

وعن اأبي هريرة –ر�سي اهلل عنه- ق�ل: ق�ل النبي –

�سلى اهلل عليه و�سلم- »يقول اهلل تع�لى: اأن� عند ظن

عبدي بي، واأن� معه اإذا ذكرني، ف�إن ذكرني في نف�سه

ذكرته في نف�سي، واإذا ذكرني في مالأ ذكرته في مالأ

خير منهم« رواه البخ�ري وم�سلم.

خلقه:

عن اأن�ض بن م�لك –ر�سي اهلل عنه- وك�ن �سبي� ق�ل:

اأح�سن –�سلى اهلل عليه و�سلم- من ك�ن ر�سول اهلل

The recent Bushfires that struck NSW have left some fire-fighters describing them as the ‘worst they had ever seen’. As the bushfires continued to blaze throughout NSW, the HAI team worked

tirelessly to supply aid to both victims and fire-fighters. The first trip on Wednesday 23rd October took the team to the victim shelter in Springwood, where food and water was distributed. The next visit was on Friday 25th October, which involved the transportation and distribution of two vans of food, water, hygiene kits and sleeping bags to Winmalee and Mt Victoria. Late evening the team visited the Mt Victoria Fire Station where they met the real heroes; the fire-fighters

who have been working round the clock to control the flames. They were pleasantly surprised by the generosity of our community. The comments and feedback we received was heart-warming. One such example was that of the Chief Fireman ‘Good people like you rise above those who give the Muslim community a bad name’. Hasan IbrahimThe 2nd of November marked the launch of the Australian Muslim Photographers Network (AMPN). What started off as a small group on Facebook, has begun taking its first steps towards becoming a formal not-for-profit organization. The main motive of this group is to promote photography in the Muslim society where it is not openly accepted as a credible art form or a suitable career. They hope to improve photography’s image in the Muslim society by creating a hub for beginners, hobbyists and working professionals.The organization’s president is Ahmad Sabra, a professional wedding photographer who runs a successful photography business (Lahza) in Melbourne.Benny Baharuddin has been appointed AMPN’s Vice President and is located in Sydney. He is a PhD student of the medical sciences and practices photography as a very passionate hobby.The last member to join the team is Hasan Ibrahim as the Treasurer. He is located in Melbourne and currently works in the media publishing industry. He has been practicing photography both professionally and as a hobby for the last 7 years.The, now, small team of AMPN are confident that they will be able to shed some positive light on the art form and create awareness.With the help of funding, they are hoping to hold annual exhibitions showcasing the work by talented Muslim photographers and educate the Muslim community on photography by providing access to workshops hosted by professional Muslim photographers from around the globe.

In the diversity of today’s Australia few can have the breadth of background of fund manager Simon Sokol. Like his new Multi-

Strategy Shari’a Superannuation fund Simon’s background covers many bases. It includes Albanian ancestry, and cross-faith education in Catholicism and Judaism as well his own familiy’s Islamic heritage. “Perhaps this explains why I believe you need to examine every facet of an investment from the macro background to the smallest detail,” he says when showing the layering of what he calls a Multi-Strategy Matrix.”Many aspects need to go into the mix”But why a Shari’a fund? “It’s a dream I have long had,” says the tall and effervescent Sokol in his airy office over-looking Melbourne’s Albert Park Lake.”It may be simply the outcome of all those influences, but in any event it is a great privilege to be able to finally establish this fund to serve the community.”In explaining what led up to the Islamic Principled First Guardian Super fund, he is quick to acknowledge his early mentors. One was a doyen of the Melbourne investment world in the seventies, a forceful character called John Sweeney, the chief investment officer of Trust Company of Australia.“I have to admit I was intimidated by him. It was my first ever job interview straight out of Uni. As I recall it he seemed to spend the entire time shouting at me. If I wasn’t sweating profusely it certainly felt like it. It was a barrage of questions … what is the best analytical tool? Which applies in this case price to earnings multiple or cash to assets?... Amazingly enough it was the best stage to learn and develop one’s fund’s management skills.”It was a good place to start. Trust Company was an organization which had to have the highest ethical standards to serve its mandates. As a

twenty one year old he was given management of a equity common fund, unheard of at his age. It did well over several years. The word spread and some years later one of the largest fund managers of the time Colonial made an attractive offer.Simon found himself running one of Australia’s first global equity funds.”It did well for seven years,” he says”and helped Colonial grow.”Other management opportunities followed including a stint in Japan and then a solidly performing ethical fund which he started. This became his real passion.”People imagine that an ethical fund must be colourless and a bit dull. In fact it’s the reverse. Ethical funds in general tend to do better than average for relatively simple reasons. The mere act of sitting out of markets can play a big part in performance. Managers can be hyper active. There are times when it is better to do nothing. Surprisingly that is harder than it looks.”This may be the case, but after a few minutes with Simon, it’s clear there are other factors in his success apart from patience: enthusiasm is one, but also detailed preparation and a dedication to self-assessment. “You learn more from the bad decisions than the good ones,” he says.

Detailed decision and feed-back systems brought him more recent attention when one of the managers of the Whitney Fund asked him to assist in strategy and risk management. As these are some of America’s oldest family funds, it was quite an endorsement. Did he think a Shari’a compliant fund would limit options ? “No, not really. There is no fixed interest of course, but income streams are available from infrastructure so the options remain broad and are fundamentally not very different for all ethical funds. It is much the same mind set. Shari’a also provides a good discipline. It

is less a case of what is excluded than all the things that are permitted and the approach taken to each decision. You need to keep asking questions, but patience and timing can also be very powerful factors.”It is with humble pleasure that First Guardian Super is being introduced to the Muslim community. Malek Fahad Islamic School (MFIS) is in the headlines again. Not for

the great achievements of its pupils nor for the outstanding improvements since the appointment of its new highly accomplished principal, but because an alarming letter by the state minister of education was leaked to the ABC news on the very day it was signed.

Our community, rather than asking how such a letter could be leaked to the media, went into a state of shock, adults and children became exceptionally worried about the fate of the iconic school that has become the pride and joy of the Australian Muslim community.At a meeting with parents on Thursday 6th November, a parent asked: why are we in this position and how do we resolve it?This opening question summed up the sentiments of not only the gathered parents, but

deserves betterheadlines

pretty much everyone who has heard about MFIS’ present predicament.A well known community leader appeared to seek permission from the MFIS principal to answer the first part of this question.MFIS is in this situation because of two very simple reasons:1 - The vast majority of parents have not always been interested in getting involved.2 - Many parents and community members last year saw fit to sign a petition against the school which many if not most of the signatories did not read before signing.The school arrived at this predicament because past employees had turned on the school and sent exaggerated complaints to the government and other bodies. These people threatened that either they remain doing what they wish to do at the school, or they will try their best to destroy it.Unfortunately, the state government seems to have appointed a minister to the education portfolio who did not have long experience in education (refer to his parliamentary website). This minister is attacking one of the most successful schools in Australia not realising the tremendous damage that he is doing to the students and to the beleaguered community.He took the school to court earlier this year to recover money because he had arrived at the wrong conclusion that the school was operating for profit. Whose profit? It is very unclear.However, months in court and many articles in the media, we have not seen one

bit of evidence to prove the minister’s allegations.It appears to me that the minister (or his representative) has broken the rules to send a private letter addressed to the school to the ABC news in contravention of the privacy laws. The letter was presented in such an alarming manner that some parents could not contain themselves, as we saw on ABC news again.This type of misinformed letter only serves to inflame sentiments, in a lesser society, it would create a lynch mob and one was almost created but for the cool-headedness of a number of other parents and key individuals.MFIS employs about 200 staff and looks after a couple of thousand of our Muslim children providing them with quality education and preparing them for a successful future. For all the minister’s concerns, MFIS is a school of exceptional performance, it is not only a successful school, but it is also at the top of most of the charts relating to schools in the region.Here are the main concerns raised in the government letters including the minister’s and the answers provided by the school:1 - reporting should be improved. To address this, MFIS is investing in new student management software to replace it’s old package.2 - the school had 97% attendance. Show me a school in the South West of Sydney that is even close to this figure.3 - the school is not providing a safe environment. One new staff member failed to obtain a working with children check, she was given a chance to do so

as is required, when she didn’t, she was dismissed. It just so happened that this process was during the inspection.4 - the acceleration of bright students was not systemic. The acceleration program has been operating for years under past principals and the school has faced inspections before without complaints, why now? However, the school admin have acknowledged that the acceleration program can be improved and they have started working on this improvement. MFIS is not the only school with an acceleration program, good private schools do have such programs, even some government schools do.5 - the school does not have a council occupancy approval for the number of pupils. It is correct, the school has not applied for an update for its increasing numbers since 95. Past principals didn’t do it, past boards were not alerted to this by the principals and it was overlooked. This issue was highlighted through a complaint, a dob-in by an acting principal who lost his job, the current principal has assured us that the school has complied with all council suggestions in order to increase the occupancy, a vote

is expected on this by council very shortly.We return to this question, this school was fine and producing great results until a coalition government won office.The school continues to produce great results. However, the terrible timing of the leaked letter, during the HSC exams, has had a terrible impact on the school community, boys and girls doing their exams were in tears, stressed and worried about their future. How could such a letter be given to the media when the minister had not reached a decision at such a bad time?I will continue to support MFIS, I will agitate parents to support it and I am very cross with a system that tries to bring down a successful school rather than help it. I am certain that many people, Muslims and non Muslims, will see the minister’s actions as an ill-advised effort to shut down a Muslim school because he does not want to see Muslims succeed in the state of NSW. God help us.

Melbourne IMAAustralia’s first Islamic Museum, the Islamic Museum of Australia was

given a much-needed garden makeover on Wednesday 20 November as part of a regional community initiative from Bunnings. 40 Volunteers from Bunnings’ head office and eight of its northern s stores donated their time and equipment to plant in excess of 14,000 native and exotic plants throughout the museum’s exterior in preparation for the building’s public launch early next year.Michelle Galea, Environmental Community Organiser for Northland Bunnings, had been sourcing donations and heavily reduced plants from various suppliers over the past six months in order to make the planting activity a reality “Bunnings doesn’t normally take on such large regional projects in terms of cost and man power, but when we were approached by the museum we couldn’t say no. The Museum is such a great initiative and something we need in the area to provide education about Islam.” she said.Northland Bunnings hosted the regional project as one of four community schemes that

they undertake annually. “It is a great chance to get everyone from the Bunnings stores together volunteering their time, contributing to their community and being part of something special.” explained Dom Giovinazzo, Complex Manager Northland Bunnings. Also assisting with the working bee were five VCAL students and teacher, Sonia Hammoud, from East Preston Islamic College. Sonia explained that a component of her year 11 and 12 student’s studies is to plan, organise and execute a complex project. She approached Bunnings who happened to be organising the working bee at the Museum and coincidently it fit in perfectly with her curriculum.The students have been working on the project for the past few months and they were all very excited about the opening of the Museum and proud that they could be part of the development. “The Museum is going to be such a great resource for schools. Part of our curriculum is the study of Islamic history. A place that focuses solely on Islamic substance is just what we need to keep the students interested and enthused about the subject. We will definitely be making the most of the

workshops and exhibitions on offer when the museum opens next year.” said SoniaAll 14,000 trees, shrubs and grasses were successfully planted over the course of a few hours and it is expected they will grow in size and stature before the museum’s

their employees (e.g. when they want to pursue study or start a family). Here are some things we think all candidates should be aware of before deciding to pursue a government job.1. Expect to be up against stiff competition - For all the reasons we mentioned above and more, government jobs are in high demand. If you’re going to be successful in an extremely competitive candidate pool, you need to be prepared to invest a good deal of time in understanding government recruitment processes, deciding which roles you’d be considered a strong applicant for, and of course, perfecting your application.2. Be realistic about your salary expectations - Many people who are after these jobs expect to be able to move into the government sector at a comparable salary to their private sector salary. This is often not the case. The vast majority of these people moves in or out of the government sector take a considerably lower salary, with a view to progressing once they have a foot in the door.3. Understand that government recruitment can be totally different to private sector recruitment - If you’re a first-time government applicant, you should familiarise yourself with the government recruitment process so you know what to expect. For instance, many applicants have been hugely frustrated by the length of time a government job can take to fill. This is due to a couple of key reasons. Government recruitment is subject to statutory requirements that can take time to fulfil. These include length of time a job needs to

be advertised, the formation of a selection panel and merit list, the conduct of panel interviews, advertising of preferred candidate, and many more. 4. Make sure you meet position requirements - Even if you’re applying for a similar job to your private sector job, you may not meet minimum requirements for a role. These can be related to Australian residency, formal qualifications, licences or experience in a certain field. If you don’t meet the listed requirements for a role, it’s best to get in touch with the position contact to check that you’d be considered even though you don’t meet all the requirements. That way, you can save yourself the time in applying where you’re unlikely to be considered, and instead focus on roles where you would be.5.Make sure you submit a full application - Government departments can vary greatly in what they ask their applicants to submit. Typically you’ll be asked to submit a resume, a cover letter and a response to selection criteria. Although some roles will ask for only one or two of these. Selection criteria responses can vary greatly in word/page length, so it’s extremely important to make sure you’re clear on what is being asked for. Be sure to read the position documentation thoroughly – perhaps read over it several times. Your selection criteria response needs to be strongly evidence-based and highly relevant to the position. You need to cite specific and relevant examples that demonstrate the capabilities listed in each criterion, and for most jobs you need to provide a categorical response to each criterion. Things You Should Consider Before Applying

For A Government Job

There’s been a lot in the media around mobile phone use in cars recently. That’s because from 25 November if you’re caught illegally using your mobile phone while

driving, it will cost you $433 and four demerit points. Let’s face it, driving is complex and challenging enough without adding a mobile phone in the picture. That’s why our road rules are changing to help combat the growing problem of distraction, which has the potential to result in deaths and injuries on our roads. The changes to mobile phone rules for P-platers and penalties for illegally using a phone while driving will come into effect in a month. The total ban on mobile phone use is also being extended from P1 drivers on red P-plates, to P2 drivers on green P-plates. It’s a scary statistic that 88 per cent of young drivers using mobile phones report reading text messages and 77 per cent report sending text messages. Young drivers are the most vulnerable road users and we know they face extra challenges because they have grown up with mobile phones, so to take away the temptation to use them while driving, we are introducing stricter laws. Seventy per cent of young and middle-aged drivers report using a mobile phone some of the time while driving. Sixty per cent of middle-aged drivers report reading texts and 51 per cent report sending them. P2 drivers, who are those in the second, third and fourth years of having their licence, will no longer be allowed to use a mobile phone while driving - this includes using a hands-free device while driving or stationary at traffic lights. These tough, new penalties mean that probationary drivers, with a demerit point threshold of just five points, are at serious risk of losing their licence if they are caught illegally using a mobile phone because they will have incurred four points. Any driver caught using a mobile phone illegally risks accruing one-third of the 12 demerit point threshold for a single, stupid act.To help drivers avoid the temptation to use their mobile phone, VicRoads has developed “Road Mode” a free app which, when activated, silences incoming calls and text messages and lets the sender/caller know the driver is driving. The increased mobile phone penalties and changes to the rules for probationary drivers is one of the key initiatives in Victoria’s Road Safety Strategy (2013-2022) and Victoria’s Road Safety Action Plan (2013-2016), announced in March 2013.

MelbourneWhen did Tanzeel Academy established?- Well, to answer that question I have to go back

and mention few stages that we went through in reaching to where we are now as Tanzeel Academy. It was back in 2008 when a group of young brothers brought the idea together

and wanted to teach kids Quran classes and the kids’ number at that time was very few in number. As we go forward and the Hume Islamic Youth Centre became known to the community – these Quran teaching classes expanded with it. Me and few other brothers and volunteers joined the group in 2009, with that the school started to improve in its delivery and overall operational

system and it became obvious that many business and individuals started to support the school and this helped us to be more structured in delivering Quran, Arabic and Islamic studies classes to our children. Followed these progresses, in December 2012, the Quran Shura in its formal meeting agreed to give Tanzeel Academy as a name to the school.

What are the classes or subjects you teach and what are the contents of these teachings?- It is a good question - as many people from within the Islamic and the mainstream community may have enquiries about this – where they want to know what is the content of the teachings that we give to our children. As many of us knows the Islamic religion thought us through our prophet Mohammed (SAAW) to become good to our selves, to parents and to the society that we live in – and that is what we teach in Tanzeel Academy. Kids in Tanzeel Academy learn about how to become patient, teach them to obey their parents, respect their neighbors and ovoid anything which brings harm to themselves or to others – this is the core Islamic teaching that our prophet thought us through ‘Quran’ in the first place and his ‘Hadeeth’ in the second place. Kids also learn how to read Arabic alphabets, then words and then sentences through different Arabic language books. We have beginners, intermediate and advance level classes, where students are tested and put into appropriate suitable level so that they get advantage/benefit from what they learn.

What other programs does Tanzeel Academy runs with the core teachings?-Tanzeel Academy not only teaches Quran, Arabic and Islamic Studies – but also we arrange and organize Soccer tournaments, BBQ events

in close by parks and Quran memorization competitions in Ramadan time where kids who strive and aspire gets prizes. We also run big Islamic Lectures – where both kids and parents are invited to attend and before these lectures – we carefully arrange lecture topics of great concern to the society which helps family and local community benefit at the end. To mention some of the lecture topics that we arranged are ‘Obeying your parents’, ‘Parents - How to best deal with your kids’ and in the future Tanzeel Academy has plan to arrange to talk about ‘violence’ and ‘discrimination’ related topics, this will be delivered by inviting speakers from within the mainstream professionals so everyone can interact and get benefited from each other.

How you recruit teachers and are teachers in Tanzeel Academy paid? - Currently, we have around 14 - 16 teachers in Tanzeel Academy and all of them are volunteer teachers. All teachers in Tanzeel Academy do not get any money, they do it for free and I would like to say here ‘may Allah provides them many ‘Ajer’ inshaAllah’. Coming to the first part of your question, our recruitment process is simple – if we see the need of a volunteer teacher we advertise during pray time or through word of mouth or by circulating SMS messages to the HIYC network we have. As we always need volunteers, if anyone is interested to join the group to teach voluntarily please come to HIYC centre and meet with one of the Quran ‘Shura’ members – and then give your number, we will definitely call you back.

Is there any cost involved for any children to register in the school?-There is a semester fee (for two terms) of $50 that means it is all $100 for a full year. This money usually spent during or for soccer tournament, BBQ

event and also buying administrative / stationery that helps kids for their classes.

Currently how many kids or students are registered in Tanzeel Academy? -First of all Tanzeel Academy runs for four days during the whole one week.. That means, we have WEEKDAYS Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6PM to 8PM and the WEEKENDS classes run on Saturday from 10AM until Zuhur time around 1PM. This will help me now to answer your questions – we have about 45 students learning during WEEKDAYS and 70 students are attending WEEKENDS classes. We have few waiting list who are registered and currently are waiting to join us next year.

What are the last wards you want to say in this interview? - I would like to thank Al-Wasat Newspaper for giving me the opportunity to give a bit of information about Tanzeel Academy and what are the currently programs that we set and we are delivering to the local community and in addition to the fantastic services that The Hume Islamic Youth Centre is providing to our young people. The centre is providing multi-services to the local community where they can come and meet their friends in and learn about Islamic religion, also learn about Arabic language in addition to that as well to come for recreational activities like GYM, soccer while enjoy eating in HIYC Café/restaurant. My last advice goes to the parents of our students – we need them to be pro-active by that I mean to engaging with us before something negative happen, and to follow the request made by your kids teacher to assist their kids, also to allocate time for their kids to learn Arabic and Quran and to help them finish their homework which is given by their teachers.

The declaration of war by Britain in August 1914 committed, without consultation, the whole

British Empire to the conflict. It commenced with the assassination of the heir to the Austrian throne in the Muslim city of Sarajevo in June 1914, by a Serbian extremist. This murder marked a watershed in world history, in Australian history and in Muslim history.Many Australian Muslims find the attention given to the British and French invasion of Anatolia, at the entrance to the Sea of Marmara in 1915, and the central significance of Anzac Day in local culture, to be hard to understand.We must remember that Australia was then a very loyal colony of the British Empire. A huge proportion of the white Australian population had been born in Britain or were the children of immigrants from Britain. About 4.5 million people lived here at the commencement of war and by 1918 some 400,000 volunteers had been recruited to fight in Europe. Over 59,000 soldiers were killed and a whole generation of Australian women spent their lives alone as a result. Nearly all my teachers in primary school were members of this generation.The white complexion of the population, apart from the original inhabitants who were not considered members of the main Australian community and were not even counted until the 1967 referendum, was strictly protected by the 1901 Immigration Restriction Act. It provided that all ‘coloured’ people trying to enter Australia would be required to submit to a medical examination and to a dictation test. This test could be in any European language. In practice this meant any language of which that individual was ignorant. Resident ‘coloureds’ were also required to apply for a special certificate to enter another state. Then the 1903 Naturalization Act provided that applicants for Australian naturalization could not be natives of Asia, Africa or the Pacific Islands (except for New Zealand). There was little evidence of any local anti-Muslim pogroms at the time of the war, although it was against the Caliph of Islam, an ally of Imperial Germany. There was some scuffling after the New Year’s Day murder of passengers on a picnic train in Broken Hill in 1915 by two “Turks” who were in fact Afghans, and the Little Gilbert Street Mosque in Adelaide was attacked. Fortunately it had a high wall and was not invaded but the flagpole was bent out of shape. The police dispersed the rioting heroes.Turkish subjects were the main object of interest for the authorities rather than Muslims as such. The Commonwealth Military Forces Headquarters in Melbourne on 6 November 1914 had requested police for any information as to the whereabouts of any agents of the Turkish Government. It also asked for the “issue of secret instructions for all Turkish subjects to be kept under surveillance by the police throughout the State.” There was evidence of suspicion of Muslims compared to Christians in wartime regulations. The Director of Military Operations for the Chief of General Staff on 22 January 1915 issued instructions that “Any Turkish subject who is by race a Greek, Armenian or Syrian or member of any other community well known to be opposed to the Turkish regime and a Christian and who gives no cause of complaint may be excepted from paragraph 4 Aliens Instructions. Any such person now interned may be released.” States were required to provide a list of all Turkish subjects registered under the Aliens Registration Regulations. Returns for South Australia indicate that they were all Christians, mostly from Lebanon.Of course hundreds of thousands of Muslims were fighting for the British and French Empires, conscripted from their Indian and African territories. Cairo was full of British, including Australian troops before the invasion of Turkey. From 1916 the Arab Revolt was fighting for British sponsored “liberation” from the Ottomans, which culminated in the Sykes–Picot betrayal of Sharif Hussein and the creation of the Ibn Saud family dynasty in the Hejaz, under British tutelage. Australia suffered terribly from the war and even those who came back alive were scarred for life. Post-traumatic stress was not understood then and thousands of men lived out their lives in torment. It was a terrible time and many of the Gallipoli veterans I knew never forgave the British for what they had experienced in 1915 in Turkey and then on the horrific Western Front. They are all dead now but some of us remember their stories.

For Muslims, the most important source of authority after the Qur’an

is the normative behaviour of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), known as Sunna. While the term of Sunna represents the normative behaviour of the Prophet, this Sunna is documented in hadith according to Islamic tradition. Then Hadith refers to information about the Prophet, such as his sayings and deeds and descriptions of his person, as narrated by the Companions. (A. Saeed, Islamic Thought) In this writing, I will elucidate the importance of Sunna (Hadith) in Islamic tradition and emphasise on understanding hadith according to needs of our time. Classical mainstream Islamic teaching emphasises that the Prophet received not only Qur’anic revelation, but also special revelation, Sunna, besides the Qur’an. Gabriel transmitted the sunna just as he brought the Qur’an. In other words, sunna (hadith) was revealed by God through the Prophet just like the Qur’an. Whenever the Prophet received a revelation, he was also given a sunna to clarify it. (D. Brown, Rethinking tradition; A. Von Denffer, Ulum al Qur’an) At this context, it is reported that the Prophet states ‘Indeed, I was given the Book and something similar to it.’ (Abu Davud, Sunna 5) Moreover, according

to classical principles of jurisprudence, revelation is made up of two: ‘Recited Revelation’ (wahy matluw) and ‘Unrecited Revelation’ (wahy ghayr matluw). The recited revelation is the Qur’an, which is the speech of God, while the unrecited revelation is the hadith, which is the Prophet’s sayings and deeds. In general, the unrecited revelation is seen as inspiration from God, while sometimes the Prophet was giving his personal opinions in a number of occasions. According to Islamic law, both are ‘revelation’ while the Qur’an, the recited revelation, is superior. (A. Saeed, Interpreting the Qur’an)For Muslims, indeed, the most fundamental sources of Islam are the Holy Quran and secondly the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and his sunna. He was sent to humanity as a good model by Allah. However, as Prof.

Mehmet Görmez says, we have critical issues in carrying the prophet’s model, guidance and sunna to this age, today’s people and youth. To bring the spirit of the prophet’s message for the future to this age is of particular significance. The spirit of the sunnas, which are valid in all ages, needs to be conveyed to the future generations. Shah Wali Allah (d. 1176/1762) argues that it can be partly said that Muslims practise the sunnas as a form. The prophet has hundreds of sunnas which he did so that people would take them as an example. However, are Muslims successful in conveying the sunnas of His road to their road. Therefore, Muslims need to seriously think about the prophethood, and the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) as a model and sunna. The Significance of Sunna in Islamic Tradition

Most analysts are engaged in reading political r e v o l u t i o n s ;

however, the deep silent revolutions pass by unnoticed. A community with individuals that read for change shall consider itself intellectually wealthy. On the contrary, societies with restricted reading patterns, or those lack interest in reading at all, must not be surprised to see all kinds of community troubles and disengagement. It is the quantity, quality, and variety of reading in a community that usually determines the outcomes of silent revolutions. Reading for change equips individuals with unique tools during the ongoing community progress. There is growing realisation that reading is no longer a hobby, it is rather a culture and an obligation. Without a culture of reading, an individual is deprived of learning from history, isolated from contributing to present surrounding, and as a result, suspended from shaping the future. It’s necessary to dismiss any psychological barriers and obstacles to reading that might appear impossible to remove. A useful strategy would be to

begin reading topics of interest with intention to move to broader areas of reading in philosophy, spirituality, sciences, social sciences…etc. Many struggle with balancing between reading in an area of specialisation and a general interest. In any case, with reading it is a win-win situation; over the years of reading we will gain experiences of many generations, and save ourselves much effort and mistakes in practical life situations. While individual reading is the most common form of reading, it can be done collectively

as well. Discussing books in forums, seminars, and reading clubs, are examples of important interactive reading methods. Group reading attracts largely kids, and nurtures the love of books in them. Many people prefer group discussions as it opens windows of positive critique, and generates ideas in a semi or in-formal fashion. Good readers are those who look between the lines for a space to grow their thinking. They say that our minds are constructed based on our personal experiences, early family environment, and readings. However, there might be deficiencies in some parts of our early mind construction, and personal experiences, thus, we need be aware not to emphasis these deficiencies through our selections and judgments of books. Reconstructing our thoughts is a continuous development process, reached through exposure to new ideas constantly. To achieve development at all levels, a vibrant community constantly provides the suitable environment for exposure to new ideas, and mobilises its members towards a reading revolution.

DEEWR’s Monthly Leading Indicator of Employment (Indicator) has fallen for the fifth

consecutive month in June 2013, as a result of substantial data revision and falls over the latest month in the ANZ Newspaper Job Ads series and the Westpac-Melbourne Institute Consumer Sentiment Index. One more monthly fall in the Indicator would be required to confirm that employment is likely to grow at a rate below its long-term trend of 1.5 per cent per annum in around half a year’s time. Cyclical employment, in contrast, has risen for five consecutive months. Jobs figures released today by the ABS show that Australia’s labour market remains resilient, with our unemployment rate remaining low at 5.5 per cent.Seasonally adjusted employment continued to expand in May, increasing by 1100, to stand at a record high of 11,663,300. Seasonally adjusted part-time employment increased by 6400 in May 2013, to stand at 3,509,600, while full-time employment decreased by 5300 to 8,153,600. The unemployment rate in Australia decreased from a revised 5.6 per cent in April to 5.5 per cent in May. Labour force participation also declined marginally, by 0.1 percentage points to stand at 65.2 per cent. The Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations, Bill Shorten, welcomed today’s employment result, highlighting that more than 960,000 jobs have been

FORD WORKERS LOSSES JOBS AS A RESULT OF PRODUCTION SLOWSIn July, Ford announced it would cut 440 jobs as it slowed production from 209 cars a day to 148 to match falling demand for the Falcon sedan and Territory SUV. Ford was able to prevent 110 of those job cuts - to bring the total job cuts to 330 - after finding placements for some workers in product development, and taking Ford Performance Vehicles in-house from next year. SWAN SERVICES ENTERED INTO VULUNTARY ADMINISTRATIONIn May, nearly 600 cleaners in Queensland have lost their jobs as part of the collapse of Swan Services. They are among almost 2500 workers employed nationwide by Swan Services, which appointed Pitcher Partners as voluntary administrators on Wednesday night. The 43-year-old company had debts of about $2.8 million and 583 staff in Queensland, according to Pitcher Partners director Anthony Elkerton. About $2.5 million is owing to the company and attempts will be made to collect

that money. The blow to workers will be softened somewhat by the potential for work with other cleaning companies. A creditors’ meeting is due to be held on June 3. Earlier it was reported that some 2500 cleaners have lost their jobs after the firm they worked for ran out of money to pay their wages. Swan Services, which has operations in Queensland, stopped trading and appointed Pitcher Partners as voluntary administrators on Wednesday night. Pitcher Partners director Anthony Elkerton says Swan had debts totalling about $2.8 million when it stopped trading. The administrators will try to collect about $2.5 million owed to Swan.

Muslim Wills (“Wasiyyah”).A Muslim Will must conform to Shariah in form and content. Not more than one third of the net estate can be willed away to ensure enough is left for faraid heirs who are dependents (parents, spouse, children). Heirs who will inherit under faraid cannot be beneficiaries under the Will to ensure shares as among themselves are not enlarged beyond what is stipulated under Shariah. The intent is to avoid discontent and disharmony among family members. A charity can be a beneficiary under a Muslim Will provided the charity exists for purposes permissible under Shariah, otherwise it is invalid.The testator can name the executor of his estate in his Will. The testator may also, in his Will, appoint a guardian for his minor children. He may appoint a trustee, who need not be a Muslim, to manage his children’s inheritance while they are minors.Witnesses cannot be beneficiaries to the Will. It’s a Saturday evening. You decide to do some grocery shopping with your daughter. You park the car

and head towards the entrance of the shopping centre when you notice a tall, skinny, white Anglo male, with a beer in one hand staring at you and your daughter. You quickly look away and pick up your pace as you walk towards the shopping complex. “show me your hair” comes a sneering voice, you look back to see the intoxicated man approaching your daughter. Your daughter shoves him away and attempts to distance herself from him. But this monstrous man is relentless, he reaches out to your daughter and rips off her hijab, she shrieks, your heart is racing as you run towards your daughter. “What is your problem?” you yell at the violent man. You push him away, grab your daughter’s hand and run to the shopping centre where you see a gruff looking security guard. You breathe a sigh of relief when you reach the guard. Surely, he can protect you. You quickly explain to him what is going on but he just gives you a blank stare and motions with his hands for you to move along. Your heart picks up its pace again as you realise you hadn’t found safety after all.You walk into the supermarket thinking that you’ll be safe around all those people but there he was, leaning against the wall with a smirk on his face. He begins to walk towards you. You look left and you look right - desperate for safety. You feel your daughter’s hand

squeezing your own. “Go back to your country” he mutters. “We don’t want you here,” he mutters as he steps closer and closer. He reaches his hand out towards you. The rest of the world has gone silent. Thump. Thump. Thump. Your heart is pounding. Suddenly the world goes black. You wake up to find yourself in hospital with your daughter safely by your side. You had fainted and the man had run away. Someone called an ambulance. No one knows your attacker’s name. He was just the racist, drunken man.This story will be completed in the next edition of Al-Wasat. It is based closely on a compilation of similar, true experiences reported to the Muslim Legal Network by Victorian Muslim women. Incidences like this happen all the time and they almost always go unreported. Many Muslims around Australia have suffered from anti-Muslim hate. The next part of the story is taken from a real

situation where a woman demonstrated how such a terrible incident can have a positive ending.

As-salamu alaykum, I hope this message is received in the best of health.

When was the last time you checked your weight? When was the last time you critiqued your diet? Are you following the Australian Dietary and Physical Activity Guidelines? These questions should not alarm you. There has been a dramatic increase of overweight people in Australia over the last 20 years. The clear understanding is our body weight is inextricably linked to health diseases and illnesses such as type 2 diabetes, mortality, coronary heart disease, hypertension and stroke. According to the Preventative Health Taskforce: Obesity Working Group, Australia is one of the most overweight developed nations with over 60% of Adults and one in four children overweight or obese. The government to tackle the crisis injects a cost of up to $56 billion per annum. The holy Qur’an (7:31) states ‘O children of Adam, take your adornment at every masjid, and eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He likes not those who commit excess’. As Australian Muslims we have a responsibility to look after our bodies in every aspect. The question is what will you do now? Eating a balanced healthy diet and getting the right dose of exercise is difficult but attainable in today’s non-stop chop-chop society. The two main dietary ingredients that effect weight gain/loss so immensely are fat and alcohol. As practicing Muslims we are grateful that alcohol is forbidden for many reasons and health being one. A rich 9 calories per one gram of fat only means one thing, if an individual is able to lower their fat consumption they will have a higher chance to lose weight. Carbohydrates and protein also play a role in weight management but not as significant with only around 4 calories per gram irrespectively. Australian Muslims should engrain these guidelines into everyday life:-Enjoy a wide variety of nutritious foods (variety of fruit, leafy green vegetables, legumes/beans, lean meat and poultry, wholegrain rice and breads, oats, quinoa, barley) -Lower consumption of foods with added sugar and salt-Drink plenty of water-Avoid high saturated and trans fatty foodsAs exercise scientists we identify that exercise only comprises of 20% of your health and the other 80% from your nutrition. There is also importance on recovery; this may be sleeping, praying, socialising, reading or stretching. An average Australian adult is recommended to exercise at a moderate-vigorous intensity thirty minutes or more on 5 or more days a week. The recommendation varies with the disabled, elderly and children. Replace ‘strict’ exercise with ‘opportunity’ exercise, it has a much more empowering and invigorating approach. Here are some tips to achieve your daily dose of exercise; cycle to work, school or even half cycle then take public transport half your way, take the stairs rather than the lifts, plan a day ahead, dedicate a day with a group of friends, work colleagues or family members to exercise together, this may be walking to the park, playing a game of tennis. Join a fitness club, designate some space at home for exercise e.g. a mat, door workout bar and Swiss ball for some simple, cost efficient and ideal workouts. September was the day PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced his

much-anticipated democratization package. This was truly a watershed moment in Turkish history. Among the many reforms came the lifting of the decades-old ban on headscarves in the civil service. Female civil servants (except judges, prosecutors, police and military personnel) are now allowed to wear the headscarf with no legal impediments. Interestingly, it is little-known that the reforms also remove the restrictions on men sporting beards in the public work force. The reforms were generally well-received in Turkey and abroad, however opposition came from those sympathetic to the Kemalist ideology. Shortly after the reforms, on October 31; four headscarved female lawmakers from the ruling Justice & Development Party (AKP) entered the General Assembly meeting in Parliament, serving as a litmus test for the new reforms. Turkey passed the test. Thankfully we did not see a repeat of the 2 May 1999 incident where Turkish-American lawmaker Merve Kavakci was shamefully booed out of Parliament and had her citizenship revoked for entering with her headscarf, after then Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit provoked his cronies to “inform this woman of her limits!”. The four headscarved deputies broke the taboo (there are no parliamentary

by-law restrictions) by entering Parliament, effectively setting a milestone and halting the petty debates that have plagued Turkey for years. Turkish democracy has clearly matured and the reforms by the AKP were well-calculated given the opposition parties - the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and the Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) – supported the move. The staunchly-secular main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) had no choice but to exercise restraint and suffice with some criticism of the AKP.Gone are the days were the conservative segments of Turkish society were seen as the “other”. In the words of PM Erdogan: “Turkey is now going through a period of normalization”. Of

course there is more work to be done as a discriminatory partial ban on wearing the headscarf for judges, prosecutors, police and military personnel is in effect. PM Erdogan has assured that these reforms are only the beginning of a series of reforms. Critics of the AKP who argue that it should not have taken so long to resolve the headscarf issue must understand and appreciate that the results today are a culmination of intense grassroots work by the AKP since forming government.Roughly 60% of women in Turkey don the headscarf and thousands were forced to leave Turkey to pursue an education abroad. Many Turkish-Australians who had dreams of working or studying in Turkey were affected by the ban and had no choice but to pursue alternative routes. It is a cause for celebration that they can now pursue their dreams without fear of discrimination. We can finally expect to see an increased participation by women in all facets of society in the years to come, which will be the consolidation of a truly participatory democracy in Turkey.The reforms come as PM Erdogan intensifies his efforts in a bid to resolve Turkey’s decades-old Kurdish conflict.

In front of the world’s eyes Morsi, the democratically elected president of Egypt was

removed from his position by the military. We also remember how few governments around the world disapproved Morsi’s undemocratic removal, especially democratic states namely US and European countries.I was among the people in front of Melbourne Library who rallied against Morsi’s removal. After making this fact straight I have to say that I was against Muslim Brotherhoods’ nomination for the president from very beginning due to Egyptian people’s fears about each other. In short, Egyptian people were not ready for a Brotherhood Government. What they needed was an independent president and a national unity government at least for two terms so that the groups could get to know each other and amend their policies which make other parties worried.But Muslim Brotherhood did not act wisely. Thus, the expected events took place one after another like a snow ball. Muslim Brotherhood and their advisers could not read the Arab Spring properly nor did they comprehend their own country’s dynamics. Muslim Brotherhood had to remember that it was all parties of Egypt which brought the Mobarak regime down not the Brotherhood alone. The Brotherhood also underestimated

the traditional powers of the West as the Old colonial powers with current political and economic and military relations in Egypt.In plain terms, Egypt should have followed the example of Tunisia where the Arab Spring started and inspired other Arab nations. Many people know that No matter what democratically acceptable steps Tunisia’s and Egypt’s political groups would take Neo-Cons of the colonial powers with vested interests would try to destabilise Tunisia and or Egypt in order to continue their rule, However if the main groups of Tunisia and Egypt act wisely, and patiently in a reconciled way and recognise each other’s Universal human rights it would be very hard for the Neo-Cons of the West to deceive their own governments for intervention and also it would be very hard for Neo-cons to find an accomplice to

disrupt democratic process inside the referred countries since all groups had an agreed road map to obtain all democratic rights. The recent assassination of two opposition party figures in Tunisia is a good example of how the evil powers try to stop the national unity government to advance the road map to democracy in the country. If Tunisia’s Pro Islamist party An Nahda and its leader Rashid Gannushi did not have the wisdom of choosing a non affiliated president and forming a coalition government the situation would be unbelievably more chaotic now. When it comes to the West, the West acted hypocritically in Morsi’s removal. Yes we can accept that Morsi had made some mistakes as claimed and thus millions of people wanted Morsi to resign since Morsi was eclected with only 53 percent of votes. At this point, If the West was sincere about elections and democracy It should have waited longer and persuade Morsi to go to early election, possibly reconciling all Egyptians to have a non partisan president. But The West chose killing democracy in Egypt. The West had to be patient because It was the West with three centuries of democratic experience to know that the road to democracy is not quick and easy.

front page articles in different newspapers around the country.Being a prodigious Indigenous footballer and the cousin of boxing champion Anthony Mundine makes this story very significant for consumers of news in Australian and overseas.A number of the articles on the story explained that the appeal to Islam for our new brother is the discipline that Islam can bring into the life of a person when he or she brings his or her heart to Allah.We saw the blessings Islam brought into the life of another football and boxing champion Br. Sonny Bill Williams whose personal discipline was brilliantly expanded to assist his team, the Sydney Roosters, win this year’s NRL premiership.What we saw with Br. Sonny Bill Williams is a migration from one attitude to another, from one state of mind where one day, the media describes club antics, to the next where they describe a life of discipline, maturity, good citizenship, good family spirit and great sportsmanship.We pray that Br. Blake Ferguson’s transformation will be equally soothing to his heart and soul and that Allah will bring him the success he deserves.The Hijra year 1435 has only just started two weeks ago, it marked with it the Hijra/migration of one prominent very talented footballer

into a way of life that appreciates discipline as something that brings a person closer to Allah. The Hijra era marks the migration from one state to another, from oppression to freedom, from insecurity to security and from weakness to strength.In Australia, we have seen the Hijra of many people who embraced Islam to find inner peace. We have also seen the physical migration of many Muslims from many countries looking for all kinds of peace.But we are not the only observers, there is a nation that is made up of many faiths also observing ... and questioning: What are Muslims doing with this new found peace?Are the migrants grateful, like the Muhajirun from Makkah? Are they contributing to the betterment of society, are their children adjusting and being good Muslims?Are the converts to Islam becoming more peaceful?The examples of Anthony Mundine and Sonny Bill Williams have been great, now Blake Ferguson has some giant footsteps to follow, I pray to Allah to support him and give him success and happiness.

The rest of us, we also have a question: can we please cooperate to ensure that our words and actions do not undo the good work that these brothers will do to bring inner peace to society.

At the conclusion of formalities, guests were invited to some food, tea, coffee and traditional Albanian sweets in

Campaignto dob in guns to police

of people who have come up with a solution to gun crime. They have launched a dob in a gun campaign. COMMUNITY leader Jamal Rifi has called on residents to “dob in a gun” in response to the recent wave of shootings across suburban Sydney.The Belmore GP said he and a group of friends had started a campaign on Facebook asking parents and relatives to let police know if a family member was in possession of a gun.“We are telling the parents that their son is better off in a police cell than in a grave at Rookwood Cemetery,” Dr Rifi said.“People need to understand that this could affect their families, that nobody is invincible.”The campaign asks people to contact CrimeStoppers if they have information about illegal firearms.His call to action follows a number of shootings allegedly conducted by members of the Brothers 4 Life gang in recent weeks.Dr Rifi said stronger penalties were needed for gun crime or possession of a firearm.“Community groups and

leaders need to come together to provide leadership.”A top priority was to provide young people from multicultural backgrounds with a positive influence.However, Dr Rifi said people should not stereotype an entire community over the actions of a few.“Not all Middle Eastern youths are criminals,” he said.“Many are innocent victims of this crime.”Dr Rifi said many residents with information were often too scared to talk to the police.
