Today people rely on their alarm clocks a lot more than they did in the past. This is because of the commitments we make to be in certain places at certain times of the morning.

Some people think that an alarm clock was rst made in Germany. That alarm clock was made in the 1400's. It was a clock that hung on the wall. The clock was made of iron with a bronze bell. It was very heheavy.

A new alarm clock that hung from the ceiling was released. When it was time to wake, a piece of the clock dropped on the sleeper. Sometimes it knocked out the person instead of waking the sleeper.

In 1787, a clockmaker from New Hampshire made a clock that would "sound an alarm." His name was Levi Hutchins. He invented a clock that would wake him for work. It was very big and only rang at 4 a.m.

Other people think the rst alarm clock was wind up and could be set for any time and was patented by Seth E Thomas in 1876.
Did you know that Charles Dickens suffered from insomnia? He also believed that he had the best chance of falling asleep when he positioned himself in the center of his bed facing directly north (?!). If he lived during our time period, his family and friends probably would’ve insisted that he attend therapy.
