1. Asperges me.
1. Asperges me. Gregorian chant. Soloists – Alexander Gorbatenko
& Evgeny Mikheev
The 10th century antiphon Asperges me is performed on Sundays when
the priest sprinkles the congregation with Holy water: “Thou shalt sprinkle
me, O Lord, with hyssop, and I shall be cleansed; Thou shalt wash me,
and I shall become whiter than snow. Have mercy on me, O God, according
to Thy great mercy (Psalm 50). Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall
be, world without end. Amen.”
All Gregorian chants recorded on this CD are taken from the Gradual
choral book which contains texts and melodies of Gregorian chants
reconstructed in the second half of the 19th century by the Benedictine
monks of Solesmes Abbey in France.
The first noted chant books of the Western Church that survived till
modern times date back to the 10th century. These are graduals and
antiphons from St. Gallen, Einsiedeln, Laon and Chartres. All songs in
them are written in a common for the East and the West Coislin notation.
Under the Carolingians, the Roman Church chants, that were a version
of Eastern Christian chants, were widely used during divine services
in the Frankish Empire. With time they underwent significant changes
under the influence of local Gallical chanting traditions and Germanic
and Celtic tribal folklore. In the 9th century, John the Deacon was one of
the first to talk of Roman ornamental fineness that the Franks could
not reproduce [Bruno Stablein. Die Gesange des altromischen
[Bruno Stablein. Die Gesange
des altromischen Graduale, Vat. Lat. 5319. Monumenta Monodica Medii
Aevi. Barenreiter, 1970. Р. 143].
2. In paradisum.
Graduale, Vat. Lat. 5319. Monumenta Monodica Medii Aevi.
Barenreiter, 1970. Р. 143]. It was in Frankish monasteries where
the Roman Church chants were puri fied from orientalisms
and became a strong tradition known today as the Gregorian
chant. During the Gregorian church music reform, this chant
was introduces as the main Catholic Church chant, while most
ancient cantatory traditions related to the Eastern Church art
of singing (including the Roman one) were suppressed and
their manuscripts dest royed.
2. In Paradisum. Gregorian chant.
In Paradisum, a 13th century chant, concludes a funeral ceremony.
After the prayers have been said, the body is transferred into the tomb,
during which the clergy sing the antiphon: “May the Angels lead you
into paradise; may the martyrs receive you at your coming, and lead
you into the holy city, Jerusalem. May the choir of Angels receive you,
and with Lazarus, who once was poor, may you have everlasting rest.”
3. Thou Who Coverest Thyself with Light. Bulgarian chant.
Sticheron for Great and Holy Friday.
In the period of Ottoman rule in Bulgaria, many Christians fled, bringing
the Bulgarian Church chants to other countries; features of the Bulgarian
chant are found both in Orthodox and Latin manuscripts. In the
mid-17th century, some Bulgarian chants came into use in Russian
church singing. The chant is performed from the Synodal Lenten
Triodion with an ison by Alexander Semyonov.
“Joseph with Nicodemus takes Thee down from the tree, who clothest
Thyself with light as it were with a garment; and when he saw Thee
dead, naked and unentombed, he mourned with compassionate wailing
and said: Alas! Beloved Jesus, so short a time ago the sun beholding
Thee upon the Cross covered himself with gloom, the earth trembled
for fear, and the veil of the temple was rent in twain and now, lo! I see
Thee before me, willingly going down to death. How can I bury Thee,
my God, or how can I enwrap Thee in fine linen? How with my hands
dare I touch Thy sacred Body or with what chants can I celebrate Thy
going hence, O Lord of mercies? I magnify Thy sufferings and I praise
Thy Tomb and Thy Resurrection, crying: Lord, Glory to Thee.”
4. Cherubic Hymn. Ancient Bulgarian chant. Rendering by
hegumen Siluan Tumanov (b. 1971).
This melody is borrowed from the collection of ancient Bulgarian
chants under the general editorship by P. Dinev and arranged
in the "Neo-Byzantine" style in 1993.
“Let us who mystically represent the Cherubim, and chant the thrice
holy hymn to the life creating Trinity, now lay aside aside all earthly
care. Amen. That we may receive the King of all Who cometh invisibly
upborne in triumph by the ranks of angels. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.”
5. It is Truly Meet. Greek chant, 15th century. Soloist – Evgeny
Mikheev.
“It is truly meet to bless you, O Theotokos, ever-blessed and most pure,
and the Mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim, and
more glorious beyond compare than the Seraphim, without defilement
you gave birth to God the Word. True Theotokos we magnify you!”
The Roman Empire liturgical singing is rather poorly known. From bits
and pieces found in chronicles we know about the developed system
of cooperation between male and boy choirs during services
in Constantinople, castrate singing, applying theater mechanical
devices during services and court ceremonies. At the same time,
it is rather difficult to form a complete picture of musical life in the
Empire based on separate mentions. Theoretical comprehension
of the Roman Empire singing legacy still awaits its explorer. The
presented chant dates back to the last decades of the Palaeologus
Renaissance, when the last of the Empire weakened by two centuries of
Latin pillaging was resisting the Ottoman army.
6. Miserere. Сharakans. Work by St. Mesrop Mashtots
Two charakans from the Great Lent service represent the earliest
variety of the Armenian Apostolic Church hymns. They are included in
the choral book Charkanots written by St. Mesrop Mashtots (c.
360–440) who created the Armenian alphabet and translated the texts
of Scripture and worship into the Armenian and Georgian languages.
The presented Russian text is translated by Professor Mger Navoyan
of the Yerevan Conservatory; the English version is as follows:
“I live in misery because of a set of the sins,
My God, the Bearer of the world, help me.
I hesitate anxiously in the abyss of the sea of sins,
Good Pilot, save me.
Obscured by the winds of my iniquities, I pray, King, Peace-
giver, help me.
Have mercy on me, O God, for to the One I have sinned.
Healing source, repeatedly wash me from the sins of crime and
have mercy.
Deliver me from the blood, God, having power over every soul
and flesh and have mercy.”
These two 5th century chants are of particular value since both in the
Greek and Roman churches there survives quite few texts and melodies
of pre-iconoclastic hymns. In the 5th–7th centuries, when oral tradition
was very precise, many monks and priests knew the Holy Scriptures
and hymns by heart. In such an environment, the multilevel structure
(text + melody) was least subject to distortion in oral tradition. The
earliest neumatic (khazy) notation of Armenian chants was introduced
by Stepanos Syunetsi (Junior) who lived in the first half of the
7 th century — at the same time when Armenian early-period
hymns were recorded. A. Limondjyan (1768–1839) continued to
record melodies preserved in the memory of the masters of the
church art of singing, and N. Tashchyan (1841 —1885) wrote
down liturgical chants of the 5th–15th centuries creating the three
main music books: Сharkanots (The Himnbook), Book of Hours,
and Liturgy. Finally, already at the beginning of the 20th century,
Komitas (1869–1935) unraveled the stylistic features of works
of different epochs restoring their pristine purity.
7. Before Thy Cross we bow down in worship. Kartli-Kakhetian chant.
“Before Thy Cross we bow down in worship, O Master, and Thy
holy Resurrection, we glorify.”
8. Trisagion. Kartli-Kakhetian chant.
“Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal have mercy on us .”
Not much is known about Georgian church singing. The Georgian Church,
following the Armenian one, was Monophysite and until the 8th century
did not accept the Oros of the Council of Chalcedon. In the 8th century,
they started translating Greek church chants in the most famous
educational centers in Georgia — Khandzt, Shatberdi, Gelati, Ikalto,
Martvili, Shemokmedi, and Anchiskhati monasteries. Georgian cantus
monodicus, written in neuma in the 10th century, have survived to our
times, but are not used in the Georgian Church. Collections of church
chants of the 10th and 11th centuries contain references of authors,
such as Ioann Minchkhi, Mikael Modrekili, Ioann Mtbevari, Evtim
and Georgy Mtatsmindeli, and Yefrem Mtsire.
It is not possible to date Georgian polyphonic chants as all of them
were recorded only in the 1870s. When there remained only few
carriers of the Georgian song tradition, Pilin Koridze, an opera
bass singer, began to travel the regions of Georgia sacrificing his
solo career. He recorded around three thousand ancient Georgian
chants while bringing Georgian singing modal characteristics to
the standards of European sound. In our time, the inaccuracies
of his records were corrected, and these modern reconstructions —
those few chants that were saved — testify to the height of the
prayer mastery and artistic level of the original creators of this
distinctive singing tradition.
9. In Thee, O Full of Grace. Hymn by St. John of Damaskus.
Chant from the Suprasl monastery.
“All of creation rejoices in you, O Full of Grace: the assembly
of Angels and the race of men. O sanctified temple and spiritual
paradise, the glory of virgins, from whom God was incarnate
and became a Child – our God before the ages. He made your
body into a throne, and your womb He made more spacious
than the heavens. All of creation rejoices in you, O Full of
Grace. Glory to you!”
This is a Western Russian singing tradition chant from the Suprasl
Irmologion which dates back to 1601. Anatoly Konotop, Moscow
palaeographer, made a large contribution to promotion of Suprasl
Irmologion chants.
10 Great Doxology. Serbian chant.
This chant is performed from the five-volume edition of church chants
by Stevan Mokranjac (1856-1914). In this edition, its time of writing
and authorship are not specified. The original chant is cantus monodicus,
but according to the contemporary Serbian liturgical tradition, on
the record it is performed with an ison written by Alexander Semyonov.
“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will among
men. We praise Thee, we bless Thee, we worship Thee, we glorify
Thee, we give thanks to Thee for Thy great glory. O Lord, heavenly
King, God the Father Almighty; O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus
Christ; and O Holy Spirit. O Lord God? Lamb of God? Son of the
Father, hat takest away the sin of the world, have mercy on us; Thou that

takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; Thou
that sittest at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us.
For Thou only art holy; Thou only art the Lord, O Jesus Christ,
to the glory of God the Father. Amen.
Every day wil l I bless Thee , and I wi l l praise Thy Name
forever, yea, forever and forever. Vouchsafe, O Lord, to
keep us this day without sin. Blessed art Thou, O Lord, the
God of our fathers, and praised and glorified is Thy name
unto the ages. Amen. Let Thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us,
according as we have hoped in Thee. Blessed are Thou, O
Lord, teach me Thy statutes. (thrice)
Lord, Thou hast been our refuge in generation and generation .
I said: O Lord, have mercy on me, heal my soul, for I have
sinned against Thee. O Lord, unto Thee have I fled for refuge,
teach me to do Thy will, for Thou art my God; For in Thee
is the fountain of life, in Thy light shall we see light. O continue
Thy mercy unto them that know Thee.
Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal have mercy on us.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spiri t,
both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen. Holy
Immortal, have mercy on us. Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy
Immortal, have mercy on us.”
11. Crux fidelis, Pange Lingua.
"Pange lingua".
11. Crux fidelis, Pange Lingua. Gregorian chant.
This hymn is performed on Good Friday. During the reading of
the Gospel of John, the “reproaches” of Christ are pronounced:
“My people, what have I done to you?” Afterwards, the priest delivers
the Cross for veneration during which the clergy sing the hymn Pange
lingua. The church tradition attributes its authorship to St. Venantius
Fortunatus, Bishop of Poitiers, who wrote it on the occasion of Emperor
Justin II (565–578) presenting the Particle of the True Cross to
the newly founded monastery in Poitiers. The hymn Pange lingua
is one of the few singing culture monuments of the pre-iconoclastic
period. Troparions are dated back to the 12th century. The English
text translated from Latin is the following:
[1] “Faithful Cross the Saints rely on, Noble tree beyond compare!
Never was there such a scion, never leaf or flower so rare.
Sweet the timber, sweet the iron, sweet the burden that they bear!
[Himn] Sing, my tongue, in exultation of our banner and device!
Make a solemn proclamation of a triumph and its price:
How the Saviour of creation Conquered by his sacrifice.
(this hyms is sung after each troparion)

[2] For, when Adam first offended, eating that forbidden fruit,
Not all hopes of glory ended with the serpent at the root:
Broken nature would be mended by a second tree and shoot.
[3] Thus the tempter was outwitted by a wisdom deeper still:
Remedy and ailment fitted, means to cure and means to kill;
That the world might be acquitted, Christ would do his Father’s will.
[4] So the Father, out of pity or our self-inflicted doom,
Sent him from the heavenly city when the holy time had come:
He, the Son and the Almighty, Took our flesh in Mary’s womb.”

12. Gabriel the Archangel was Sent from Heaven. Sticheron on
the Annunciation of the Mother of God. Znamenny chant.
“Gabriel the Archangel was sent from heaven to announce to the Virgin
the glad tidings of her conceiving; Coming to Nazareth he pondered in
amazement at this wonder, ‘How shall He who dwelleth in the heights,
Whom none can comprehend, be born of a Virgin? How shall He whose
throne is heaven and whose footstool is the earth be held in the womb of a
woman? He upon whom the six-winged seraphim and the many-eyed
cherubim cannot gaze has been pleased at a single word to be made flesh
of this His creature. It is the Word of God who dwells within her. Why
then do I stand here, and not say to the Maiden: Rejoice, thou who art full
of grace: the Lord is with thee. Rejoice, O pure Virgin; Rejoice Bride
unwedded. Rejoice, O Mother of Life: blessèd is the Fruit of thy womb!’ ”

Christ the uncontained God. Let us, therefore, praise and magnify Him.”
15. Since my Youth. Resurrection Antiphon. Znamenny chant.

would behold Thee crucified, they would understand that Thy suffering
was voluntary, and would proclaim to the world that Thou art truly the
Radiance of the Father.”
17. I Rise for you at Dawn. Irmos of the Holy Friday by
St. Cosmas of Maiuma. Znamenny chant.
“I rise for you at dawn, who through compassion without change emptied
yourself for the one who had fallen, and impassibly bowed yourself to
the Passion, O Word of God. Grant me peace, O Lover of humankind.”
18. Today Salvation Has Come to the World. Hymn of the
Christ’s Resurrection. Znamenny chant.
“Today salvation has come to the world, let us sing to Him who
rose from the dead, the Author of our lives. Having destroyed
death by death, He has given us victory and great mercy.”
Znamenny chants recorded on this CD are performed from singing
books published by the Holy Synod printing house in the 19th–early
20th centuries. These song books contain nuematic chants transferred
onto square notation, prepared by the commission headed by Alexander
Mezenets in the 1670s. Most of the chants on this record can be traced
through hook manuscripts of the 15th and 16th centuries.
In the 10th century, Ancient Rus began actively borrowing artistic
principles from Christian cultures of the Mediterranean countries. In
terms of church singing art, these processes were rather complicated.
Russian singers did not embrace orientalisms alien to Slavonic singing
culture and created their own book of eastern Christian church chant
melodies, harmonious with the intonational characteristics of eastern
Slavs— the authentic music environment in which Slavs had been born,
had been living and dying long before they adopted Christianity.
By the 13th century, a system of church melodies had been established
in Rus written in diatonic major and minor keys. This system was called
“znamenny chant” as Byzantine neumes were transferred in Rus onto a
special singing notation – znamennaya. Just like the Cyrillic alphabet
was based on uncial with certain modifications and additions
corresponding to the phonetic features of the Slavic languages,
znamennaya notation was based on Coislin notation with some
modifications. In terms of melody and style, Znamenny chant
was closely related to Mediterranean Christian chants, but at the
same time remained as different as children might be from their parents.
During several centuries of prosperity and competitiveness between
Ancient Russian towns, other types of church art also witnessed
significant achievements. By the start of the 13th century, Russian
masters had created unique examples of national art, with cathedral
shapes, frescoes and icon-painting peculiar only to Ancient Rus that
one could never mistake for Byzantine or Western European tradition
despite the commonality of icon-painting and the closeness of
decorative language.
The Mongol invasion dealt a bitter blow to the development
of Rus. Out of 74 Russian towns, 49 were burnt down, and 14
of those ceased to exist at all, while 15 more turned into villages.
Only Northern regions, not touched by the invasion, maintained
a part of the pre-Mongolian spiritual treasure.
The victory of the army under Dmitry
Donskoy in the Battle of Kulikovo,
the defeat of the Polish-Lithuanian
army in the Battle of the Vorskla
River suffered from the Golden Horde,
as well as tumultuous events of the
14th century — the “Great Troubles”
in the Golden Horde, the ultimate
Fall of Constantinople as a Christian
capital, and the capture of Asia
Minor and the Balkans by the
Ottoman Empire — strengthened the political heft of Moscow,
making it the spiritual center not only of the Russian lands but also
of the Balkan Orthodox peoples enslaved by the Muslims. The rise
of the Muscovy in the 15th–16th centuries manifested itself in the
flourishing of znamenny chant, white-stone architecture, and creation
of the Moscow school of icon-painting that incorporated the features
of artistic achievements of all Russian lands and synthesized them
into a single national style. The most prominent representatives
of the Moscow school of icon-painting were Andrei Rublev,
Daniil Chyorny and Dionisius.

In 1668, a commission was established to transfer Russian
chants onto church texts corrected in the course of reforms
by Tsar Aleksey Mikhailovich and Patriarch Nikon of Moscow.
This commission, headed by Alexander Mezemets, prepared
the full edit ion of chant prayer books for print . A hundred
years later those prayer books were transferred onto contemporary
five-line notation. The books were published between 1772
and 1909 and preserved old chants thoroughly verified against
manuscripts till our time. One should mention, that the authority
of synodal books was very significant; the majority of Russian
composers of the late 19th to early 20th centuries used the
chants from these books to create their own choral compositions,
for example, Sergey Rachmaninov in his All-Night Vigil .
The beginning of ancient traditions renaissance in Russian
church singing was marked in the works by music scholars:
Prince Vladimir Odoyevsky (1804–1869), archpriest Dmitry
Razumovsky (1818 –1888) , professor S tepan Smolensky
(1848–1909), archpriest Vasily Metallov (1862–1926). The
works of prominent Soviet music scholars Viktor Belyayev
(1888–1968) , Maks im Brazhn ikov (1902 –1973) , Nikola i
Uspensky (1900–1987) continued the stud y of church chant
l egacy, s igni f icant ly expanding the percept ion of ancient
Russ i an s inging s t ruc tu re .
19. Christ is Born. Irmos of the Christ’s Nativity, by St. Cosmas of
Maiuma. Strochnoy chant. The Russian text is taken from the early-
17th century manuscript from the collection of Vladimir Odoyevsky
30-31]. Decipherment by Ekaterina Smirnova.
“Christ is born, give glory! Christ comes from heaven, go to meet Him!
Christ is upon earth, be exalted! Sing to the Lord all the earth; and all
you peoples raise the hymn with joy, for He has been glorified.”
Strochnoy chant originated in Novgorod: it started with polyphonic
two-voice versions of well known chants. Later, a third and a fourth
voice were added. Subsequently, through the efforts of Tsar Ivan IV’s
singing masters, strochnoye (line) singing evolved to the level of
musical theology — this chant conveyed the singing-theological ideas
of the Moscowian Rus elite. Like the architecture of St. Basil's
Cathedral in Moscow where a complex structure of medium and small
domes is formed around the main dome, Strochnoy chant score has the
main voice written in “traveling” chant around which a musical fabric
consisting of other chants and freely composed voices is woven. This
exceptionally prayerful and solemn style was common in Church
practice until the end of the reign of Peter I.
20. Psalm 103. Early partsong. Soloist — Boris Petrov. Canonarch —
Andrey Ivanushkin. This chant in Russian is included into two song
books dating back to 1680s; [РНБ, Вяз. Q 243, л.1об.-6, Солов.
622/673, л.9-10.]. Decipherment by Tatiana Shvets.
“Bless the Lord, O my soul, blessed art Thou, O Lord. O Lord my God,
Thou art very great. Blessed art Thou, O Lord. Thou art clothed with
honour and majesty. Blessed art Thou, O Lord. The waters stand upon
the mountains. Marvellous are Thy works, O Lord. The waters flow
between the hills. Marvellous are Thy works, O Lord. In wisdom hast
Thou made all things. Glory to Thee, O Lord, who hast created all!”
Partsong appeared in mid-18th century as a church singing style that
captures the essence of the church and political reform by Tsar Aleksey
Mikhailovich. Western Russian and Polish musical theorists, invited to
Moscow, developed a rite of new one-voiced chants symbolizing the
Russian Tsar's patronage over Orthodox peoples of Greece, Bulgaria,
and Little Russia. Based on Greek, Kievan and Bulgarian chants they
created a rite consisting of two- and three-voiced songs which was used
as a “trial run” during services in the presence of Tsar and Patriarch.
These songs were characterized by their strict attitude towards
pronouncing liturgical texts simultaneously, a rather gentle melody,
and corresponding to the norms of Western European harmony.

Savior Transfiguration Myrozhsky Monastery of city Pskov was built
in the 1150s by efforts of Niphont Archbishop of Novgorod and Pskov.
According to the legend Archbishop Niphont himself walked around
the city with a cup and collected donations for the construction of
the monastery. He commissioned first-class Greek iconographers
to paint frescos on the walls of the church. He personally supervised all
construction works. The original ground plan brought forth a church
constructed as a Byzantine cross crowned with a massive dome on a
wide drum. The church was painted from top to bottom in several tiers.
Nowadays we have a unique opportunity to see frescoes of the middle
of the XII century. When you enter the church you find yourself in the
world of spiritual being and repeat involuntarily with Prince Vladimir’s
followers: ‘… and we were brought where they worship their God. We
knew not whether we were in heaven or on earth, for surely there is no
such splendour or beauty anywhere upon earth. We cannot describe it to
you: only this we know, that God dwells there among humans.’
In 1904 in Uzhgorod, which at that
time was included in the Austro-
Hungarian Empire, the communities
of Ashkenazi Jews commissioned
to build a synagogue. This beautiful,
neo-Moorish style building was
designed by architects D. Papp and
F. Cablecam.
After the war, with the impove-
rishment of the Jewish community
of the city, the synagogue was
transferred to the Transcarpathian Regional Philharmonic, which rebuilt
the building to suit their needs. The prayer hall was divided into two
floors, a foyer and lobby were attached, and instead of the translucent
glass roof, a wood-tin roof was constructed in order to block the light
from the glass-stained ceiling. Despite the reconstruction, part of the
hall with the surviving dome had excellent acoustic characteristics.
On the Transcarpathian Philharmonic stage many famous artists
performed throughout the years like: S. Richter, M. Rostropovich,
E. Gilels, D. Oistrakh and various others. In May of 2011, the
male choir Optina Pustyn performed in the Philharmonic Hall,
and after this concert an idea was born to record the “Roman”
part of the project “Songs of Ancient Church” in the unique,
acoustic Hall.
