ces distribuidos por Europa que organi-zaba el “Ministerio de Asuntos Exterio-res”, llegó a Alemania una agrupación de la tuna granadina. Como era habitual en aquellos tiempos de escasez comple-mentaban su paga de artistas con algún negocio pequeño como llevar tabaco español que vendían a sus audiencias. Unos de esos tunos, Alejo Muñoz, em-pleó los dividendos de su pequeño ne-gocio tabaquero en comprar algo que en la Granada de entonces era imposible: ¡una guitarra “electrónica”! Una naca-rada Fame, que sería la primera guitarra eléctrica que llegó a Granada. Y aunque la amplificación artesanal de entonces era tan imperfecta que tenía que tocar-se encima de una caja de pescado, por-que tenía fugas de voltaje, con ella llegó también el Rock and roll. En la actualidad, cuando Granada es cono-cida ya como un vivero de artistas, una mi-

As was common in those times of want, the musicians made a bit on the side by doing little things, like selling Spanish tobacco to their audiences. One of the musicians, Alejo Muñoz, used the earnings from his small tobacco trade to buy some-thing that was impossible to find in Granada at that time: an “electronic” guitar! It was a mother-of-pearl Fame model, which would be Granada’s first electric guitar. Although the amplifica-tion of that era was so primitive that it had to be played standing on top of a wooden box, as its stray voltage posed a hazard, with it Rock and Roll came to Granada. Today, when Granada is known as a hotbed of artists, a look back with a magnifying glass reveals that this is

not any recent phenomenon, as pop music was very much present there, even going back to those antediluvi-an times when your guitar could shock you. The names may have changed, along with the talent on the instru-ments, the gear, the level of local pro-fessionalism, the media coverage, and the relationships making up the mu-sic community, but some one hundred names have always been around, in each generation, or two, or more than three, as in the last 30 years.Perhaps the city’s status as a univer-sity town (once the only one in East-ern Andalusia) has been a beacon in the night, attracting many young peo-ple who have brought to it a yearning to live far from home. Or maybe its cre-ativity is a function of its traditional iso-lation, as a relatively remote city; or, as the Arias theory (named after the mu-

gura la teoría Arias (que lleva el nombre del músico, Antonio Arias, quien la for-muló), se trata de los efectos secunda-rios de la composición química del agua que baja de Sierra Nevada, pasando por capas freáticas donde habitan metales preciosos que estimulan la creatividad, sea cierta, no, o casi. También afectaría a los escuchantes, porque nunca antes en ningún sitio ha sucedido una manifesta-ción, con varios miles de personas cru-zando la ciudad pidiendo música en vivo; ni tampoco después. En Granada la mú-sica es asunto de Estado. Sea o no la composición química del agua que bebemos, lo cierto es que ya en los años sesenta del siglo pasado Granada era conocida como “La fábrica de conjun-tos”, según se lee en un titular de época. En el medio siglo desde que la guita-rra blanca de Alejó Muñoz trajo el primer rock, en todas sus variedades y estilos

They combine to make for a very lively and active scene in Granada not to mention the radical perspective conveyed by the Auxilio de Cientos record label, which recently re-issued all its music, in the USA!Also important to this flowering was the media’s acceptance of musical creation as a significant phenomenon: radio sta-tions, newspapers and fanzines sowed the soil before the arrival of the Inter-net, with its instant communications. Not to be overlooked is its essential set of venues that nurtured musical ca-reers, including its clubs in the 60s, and

But we must point out that these very celebrated (and long-lived, two qualities that almost always go to-gether) represent just a small slice of what during each stage of this half cen-

(Alejandro Salgado) and ¿Por qué en Granada? (J.A. García, Javier and Óscar Parada) give one a good idea of our city’s longstanding musical creativity. Why in Granada? It must be the water. Restaurante vanguardista abierto hace ya más de una década, frente al jardín botánico de la Facultad de Derecho. Desde su inicio, ha sido abrigo de toda clase de intelectuales granadinos y foráneos muy vinculado a poetas, escritores y cineastas. También ha sido refugio constante de la mayoría de músicos de rock alternativo de la ciudad. Lugar de parada de avituallamiento para las bandas que vienen a tocar en el cercano Planta Baja, Discos Bora-Bora o Lemon Rock.

An avant-garde restaurant opened more than a decade ago, across from the Law Faculty’s botan-ical garden. Since opening, it has attracted local and foreign intellectuals, including poets, writers and filmmakers. It has also been a regular refuge for many of the city’s alternative rock musicians. A good stop to eat for bands playing at the nearby Planta Baja, Discos Bora-Bora, or Lemon Rock.

Since the famous drummer of KGB, Los Planetas, Lagartija Nick, Los Evangelistas and the leg-endary rock-flamenco work Omega opened this tapas bar with a pub-like spirit, El Bar de Eric has become a Mecca for musicians from Granada; those who come from outside to play in Granada, and any visitor who wishes to check out its fetishistic and photo-rich rock museum.

The legendary terrace run by the no-less-legendary singer and dancer for whom it is named has been a spot for the city’s flamenco artists, celebrities, tourists, authorities and rock-ers for 30 years. Here the legendary “Omega” from Lagartija Nick and Enrique Morente cut their teeth. Decorated as a museum featuring hundreds of photos, most of them dedicated, of the most wide-ranging artists and musicians.

Between the Cathedral and the Plaza Bib-Rambla one finds the Provincias, where the old and traditional combine with a very eclectic clientele, often including a musician or two. Highly recommended for its fare and typical tapas – and if you want to experience Grana-da’s alleged “mallafollá” (characteristic surliness).

La calle Pagés es la vía de acceso al Albayzín por su parte alta, subiendo por la carretera de Murcia y casi en la esquina de ambas vías se encuentra Casa Torcuato, restaurante clásico y genuino del famoso barrio granadino, con ambiente familiar y decoración tradicional que hace sentir como en casa a muchos músicos y artistas de esta ciudad.

La Calle Pagés is the access street to the upper part of the Albayzín, going up on the Murcia highway. Almost on the corner of the two roads stands the Casa Torcuato, a classic and au-thentic restaurant of the famous Granada neighbourhood, with a family atmosphere and tra-ditional decoration that makes many of the city’s musicians and artists feel right at home.

Mención especial a sus domingos de Jam Session donde se reúnen músicos de jazz y otros estilos en noches de improvisación.

Almost a decade ago this concert hall opened as an extension of the Afrodisia Club. It was first used as a site hosting those performances that its sister club couldn’t. That’s why the best black music is what fills its floor, 7 days a week. Of special note: its Jam Session Sun-days, when Jazz musicians, and those of other styles, meet up for improv sessions.

A legendary haunt for musicians and music lovers. Founded by members of 091 in the 80s, to-day it is captained by Sergio Vela, also a Granada musician. Lori Meyers elevated it to a temple during the first decade of the new century as the band became famous, taking over this small pub on the Calle Sol, where part of the video for Dilema, one of their first singles, was shot.
