助動詞(modal verb)とは助動詞は必要性(necessity)や可能性(possibility)の度合いを示すために用いられるもので、動詞の原形の直前に置かれる。

modal verbs – must, shall, will, should, would, can,

could, may and might

can [kˈæn]の意味① 能力 (ability)

② 可能性 (possibility)

③ 許可(permission)

④ 依頼(request)

①canを含む肯定文かたち － can＋動詞の原形

• I play the piano. 「ピアノを弾く。」

➔I can [k(ə)n] play the piano.

「ピアノを弾くことができる。」

• May plays the guitar. 「メイはギターを弾く。」

➔May can [k(ə)n] play the guitar.

「メイはギターを弾くことができる。」

基本語法• play the 楽器

通例という場合、その楽器(piano, violin, 「楽器を演奏する」guitar, flute)の直前にtheを用いる。

play the violin 「バイオリンを弾く」

play the flute 「フルートを吹く」

①canを含む否定文かたち － cannot [can’t]＋動詞の原形

• I can’t play the piano.

「ピアノを弾くことができない。」

• May can’t play the guitar.

「メイはギターを弾くことができない。」

①canを含む疑問文• かたち － canを文頭に置く

Can you play the piano?

「ピアノを弾くことができますか。」

- Yes, I can. / No, I cannot [can’t].

「はい、弾けます。/いいえ、弾けません。」

Can May play the guitar?

「メイはギターを弾くことができますか。」

- Yes, she can. / No, she cannot [can’t].

「はい、弾けます。/いいえ、弾けません。」

②「可能性」を意味するcan(1)

• Anybody can make mistakes.

「誰もが失敗しうる。」

※anybody [anyone]「誰でも」

※make a mistake [mistakes]「間違える」

• Smoking can cause cancer.

「喫煙はがんをひきおこしうる。」

※cause ~ 「～をひきおこす」

②「可能性」を意味するcan(2)

• Abe’s death can be quite a problem.

「安倍の死は大変な問題になりうる。」

※quite a + 名詞「大変な～」

③「許可」(permission)を意味するcan(1)

• Can I use your room for a while?

「しばらくあなたの部屋を使ってもいいですか。」

※for a while 「しばらくの間」

• Can I use your pen, Mike?

「マイク、ペンを借りてもいいかな。」

より丁寧に「許可」を求めたいなら、“Could I~?”を用いる。

• Could I borrow your laptop?

「あなたのノートパソコンを借りてもいいですか。」

③「許可」(permission)を意味するcan(2)

• You can eat first. 「先に食べていいですよ。」

• You can chat with her after the concert.

「コンサート後に彼女とおしゃべりしてもいいですよ。」

④「依頼」(request)を意味するcan

• Can you help me with my homework?

「宿題を手伝ってもらえますか。」

より丁寧に「依頼」したいなら、“Could you ~?”を用いる。

• Could you show me the way to the post office?

「郵便局へ行く道を教えてもらえますか。」

Exercise1次の文に助動詞“can”を補って文全体を書きかえよう。またそれぞれの英文を和訳しよう。

1. Ken speaks three different languages.

2. Chris uses the cash card.

3. Tom does not buy the chocolate.

4. Does Yumi speak Japanese?

5. Anybody does that.

6. You eat snacks here.

7. You two play football together.

8. Do you take the bag to the third floor?
