Do you need control? Do youhave a process to automate, safety features to implement,or a home project thatrequires more hands thanyou have? Welcome to theα Series Controller fromMitsubishi, the Tiny Giant. The α has been designed toprovide flexible supervisorycontrol around your factory, home, office… anywhere youneed it. α has a number of powerfulfeatures packed in its tinyframe – Real Time Clock,High Current SwitchingRelays, Analog Inputs,Security Code Clearance, 100Hrs Memory Backup – all ina range of sizes to meet yourneeds. But what truly sepa-rates the Tiny Giant fromcompetitors is the ease ofuse. The Windows based VisualLogic Software (VLS) is themost user friendly way toprogram a controller for anylevel user. The FunctionBlock programming lets youselect from a premade set ofInputs, Outputs andFunctions Blocks.Anyone can drag, drop, point, and click their way toa complete program. Perfectfor the beginning program-mer yet powerful enough forthe most advanced require-ments! On device program-ming allows fingertip pro-gram updates or data entrydirectly from the front panel. The combination of α’s smallsize, and DIN rail or screw

type mounting capabilityenhance α’s ability to beinstalled wherever necessary.α goes where you need it!The α also has the greatestlevel of functionality for anycontroller in its class. Thesophisticated user will find apowerful range of options tosatisfy the most advanced

requirements. The simula-tion function even allowsthe user to view the opera-tion of the program withoutthe use of any hardware.Powerful, User Friendly,Price Competitive - The αis ready to solve problemsfor you!

predetermined functions, anyone can quickly recog-nize what each segment ofthe program is doing. You can add comments tothe function blocks usingthe VLS software or importselected text of your own. After the program is com-plete, the VLS software letsyou simulate the program inrun mode without any hard-ware. Create your programas outlined above and thenturn on the Simulationmode in the “Controller”pull down menu. Click oninputs to turn them ONand OFF. The wires on theFBD Board light when ener-gized, timer values are dis-played on screen, andOutputs show theirON/OFF status. All the pro-gram debugging can bedone from your computer! From program initiation tothe final installation, theVLS package provides apowerful, intuitive, userfriendly programming toolfor everyone.

VLS Software

Visual Logic Software (VLS)What makes the VLS soft-ware easy to use? The VLSsoftware uses a special, sim-ple method of programmingcalled Function Block.Function Blocks are smallpreprogrammed buildingblocks of software thatprocess input data and thenturn outputs ON and OFFproviding the control youneed. Premade icons(Inputs, Outputs, FunctionBlocks, and Logic Blocks)can be placed on screen, connected with the click ofa mouse button, and youhave a complete program.

The Function BlockDiagram (FBD) Board hassquares already labeled inwhich to place your Inputsand Outputs while the func-tion blocks can be appliedanywhere on the board. Timer values, ON/OFF pat-terns, counters, calendardate, and elapsed times canbe optimized for specificapplications by simply dou-

ble clicking on the FunctionBlock and entering the datain the option settings. Every part of your programappears on screen withinterconnecting lines. Theability to see the relation-ships between the variousparts of your system makeboth programming andtroubleshooting easy tograsp. Since the blocks have

Special FeaturesAnalog Input :

Input your 0–10 voltAnalog data into as many aseight of the α Inputs.Wide Range AC or DC power

Supply :

The α accepts 100-240 VACor 24 VDC Power Supplyfor use anywhere in theworld.High Current Relay Outputs :

Switch currents up to 10amps with α’s heavy dutyrelays.Transistor Outputs :

Fast switching, long lifeOutputs.100 Hr Capacitor Backup for

memory and RTC:

The α can retain its memoryfor 100 hours after a poweroutage. There is no need tolose your programs or infor-mation just because thepower goes down.Security Code Enabled:

Only authorized personnelcan update the α programswith the Security CodeEnable Feature.Sink or Source Inputs :

The α Series can supportyour requirements for Sinkor Source inputs.LCD Display :

Access your data with thepush of a button or auto-matically display messageson α’s front panel LCDDisplay. α lets you displayup to ten characters on eachof four lines directly on thefront panel.NetWork Capability :

Network communicationboards (starting with ASI)are coming in 1999.

Features

Real Time Clock FunctionsThe α has up to 160 entriesfor Real Time ClockFunctions. Begin operationsbased on a calendar date, oron a daily, weekly, ormonthly schedule. The cal-endar schedule takes prece-dence over weekly clockfunctions so that you canprogram special orders with-out reprogramming otherroutinely scheduled tasks. The four digit year displayis Year 2000 Compliant.

Front Panel ProgrammingDo you need to control theα quickly and simply withthe push of a button? The α allows you to pro-gram, edit, access data, orinput data using only thekeys on the front panel - notools or cables are required! This makes the α conve-nient to use in applicationswhere a computer is notavailable, for maintenanceoperations on the shop floor,or to change the temperaturein your living room.

1500 Byte EEPROM MemoryThe α provides enoughmemory for the mostadvanced applications. Upto 64 function blocks or1500 bytes of memory canbe programming into the α.Additional EEPROMmemory cassettes can beused to store and run alter-nate programs.

Flicker -

Design a series of “ON”and “OFF” Output pat-terns. Have the horn soundfour ten second blasts whileyour warning light flashesfor sixty seconds.Counter -

Keep track of the number oftimes an operation takesplace for information or tocontrol your outputs. Resetthe counter with a predeter-mined signal.Compare -

Compare data, currentelapsed time, analog values,or direct input values for >,< , = , >=, < =, or notequal to and manipulateoutputs according to theresults. The compare func-tion can be turned “ON”and “OFF” with an input.Zone Compare -

Check the same data as thecompare function but thistime check your data to arange of values.Offset Gain -

Adjust the slope and offsetof Analog values with theOffset Gain Function.Includes both a High andLow clamp if desired.Schmitt Trigger -

Turn Outputs “ON” and“OFF” based upon a rangeof values. Turn the oven“ON” when the temperaturereaches 110 degrees C and“OFF” when the tempera-ture reaches 125 degrees C.Display -

Present analog or digitaldata, counter values, func-tion block values, or mes-sages on your LED display. The display is enabled viaan input signal.

Operations

Function Block CapabilitiesBoolean Logic (And, Or, Not,

Nand, Xor, Nor) -

Set up your Outputs to turn“ON” or “OFF ” by any log-ical combination of inputsignals.Set / Reset -

Latch outputs “ON”or “OFF”from your input data. Givepriority to either the SetFunction or the ResetFunction depending on yourprogramming needs. One Shot -

Copy a single pulse orspecify your own pulse.Delay times and a resettrigger give this operationmaximum flexibility.Delay -

Delay your output pulse fromstarting or stopping (or both)with the Delay Function.Keep the light turned ON orthe gate open for a set lengthof time after the switch hasbeen turned off.Pulse -

Configure and send pulsesdependent on Up or Downtriggers or both.Alternate -

Alternate turning your out-put device “ON” and “OFF”from the same Input.Real Time Clock (RTC) -

This year 2000 compliantRTC can control up to 160time/date combinations.Set your outputs to functiondaily, weekly, monthly, orset operations by a calendardate.
