Because of us, Carmen’s smile is coming straight from her heart.
Every day at Roche Diagnostics we work to help patients like Carmen live longer, healthier lives and not let things like a cardiac emergency define them. That’s why we develop diagnostic tests that help save lives by saving time when every heartbeat matters. Together, we’re making a difference. And it’s written all over Carmen’s face.

According to the National Center for Charitable Statistics, more than 1.5 million nonprofit
organizations exist in the U.S. today. When a company wants to support and give back to the community by partnering with a charity, that business
can be challenged to find the right fit.
“We had been looking for a charity with which to become involved for a couple of years,” said Jim England, president of the J.D. Byrider Advertising Group,
Inc., and chairman of the board for the Indianapolis American Heart Association.
“In 2004, our chairman and founder, Jim DeVoe, Sr., made a contribution to the AHA on behalf of the J.D. Byrider Foundation, and I got involved to see how our contribution would actually be

put to work,” England said.In time, the company decided
to direct its support toward the Indianapolis Heart Walk.
Walking and eating for a healthy heart
After several years of hosting a National Walking Day event on Monument Circle in early April, J.D. Byrider now encourages individuals to get involved wherever they are.
“This year we coordinated an early morning walk around our campus in Carmel,” England said.
That event was one of several local “mini walks,” with involvement growing.
J.D. Byrider also is expanding its affiliation with the American Heart Association by promoting heart-healthy eating and partnering with local TV programs to spread the word
about National Eating Healthy Day in November. But the company does more than talk about healthy lifestyles — leaders and managers also help train employees in life-saving techniques.
CPR saves livesEngland knows full well the
importance of CPR knowledge. In October 2011, he suffered a “widow maker” heart attack — a condition caused by a blocked left anterior descending artery. This type of heart attack has earned its fearsome nickname by having a mere 5 percent survival rate.
“I was fortunate to receive CPR within the first 2 minutes from a bystander,” he said.
Not only did the good Samaritan’s help save England’s life, but that quick action enabled a full recovery with no damage to the heart muscle.
“I was so very lucky to have been
where I was when this happened and, thanks to the quick actions of several people, am still here today.”
According to the American Heart Association, someone experiencing sudden cardiac arrest who receives bystander CPR has a much stronger chance of surviving.
Since England’s frightening ordeal, his wife, Cynthia, has helped organize CPR training parties for J.D. Byrider. To date, more than 150 people have become certified, and another training program is set to take place this fall.
As for England, he is committed to living healthier every day.
“Today I’m even more dedicated to heart health, diet and exercise,” he said.
He shares this commitment to success at each level of the company, too. J.D. Byrider is the nation’s leading used car and dealer-carried finance franchise, with 161 dealerships in 33 states. Nine are located in central Indiana. ♥
