Normal Approximation by Stein’s Method
Kritsana Neammanee
Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Faculty of ScienceChulalongkorn University, Bangkok 10330, THAILAND
Abstract : One of the most important theorems in probability theory is the central limittheorem(CLT). The standard proof of CLT is based on the Fourier transform which workswell for independent random variables. In 1972, Stein gave the new method, Stein’smethod, for normal approximation of dependent random variables. This method does notdepend on Fourier analysis but use only an ordinary differential equation.
In this talk, we give an overview of the Stein’s method for normal approximation andits applications.

Improving Mathematics Education with ICT: the Place of
the Calculator
Barry Kissane
School of Education
Murdoch University, Murdoch WA 6150, AUSTRALIA
Abstract : Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is a significant influence
internationally on many aspects of society, including the mathematics curriculum in
schools and universities. ICT has the potential to change how we think about mathematics,
how we do mathematics, how it is taught and how it is learned. In this presentation, the
particular role of the calculator will be explored, noting that modern calculators can affect
what mathematical tools students have at their disposal, what mathematical experiences
they can undertake and hence what is regarded as appropriate content for the mathematics
curriculum. Calculators are especially important because they are likely to be accessible to
most students, and hence the mathematics curriculum, including teaching, learning and
assessment, can be designed to integrate technology coherently. While scientific calculators
have many useful features, graphics calculators provide even more productive
opportunities for both students and teachers of mathematics, both in secondary schools and
the early undergraduate years.

Using Calculators for Teaching and Learning Mathematics
Barry Kissane
School of Education
Murdoch University, Murdoch WA 6150, AUSTRALIA
Abstract : In this hands-on and introductory workshop, we will explore some of the ways
in which a calculator can be used to stimulate and support students to learn mathematics
well. We will consider a range of topics that commonly appear in the school curriculum,
including aspects of algebra, trigonometry, calculus and statistics, and focus on the
opportunities provided by the calculator that were not available without access to a
calculator. Some of the time will be spent using an advanced scientific calculator, the
CASIO fx-991ES PLUS, and some time will be spent using a graphics calculator, the
CASIO fx-9860G II, both of which are in productive use in many schools and universities.
As well as offering new ways for students to engage with mathematical ideas, technologies
of these kinds offer new ways for teachers to conduct their classes. The workshop will be
designed to be informative both to teachers in secondary schools and in the early
undergraduate years. No previous experience with either calculator will be assumed.

Spectral Envelopes - A Preliminary Report
Wayne Lawton
Department of Mathematics, Faculty of ScienceMahidol University, Rama 6 Road, Bangkok 10400, THAILAND
Abstract : The spectral envelope S(F) of a subset F of integers is the set of probabilitymeasures on the circle group T=R/Z that are weak∗ limits of squared moduli of norm onetrigonometric polynomials having frequencies in F. Clearly, if µ ∈ S(F) then the supportof its Fourier transform µ is contained in the difference set F −F. However, the conversegenerally fails and an explicit characterization of the elements in S(F) is extremely elusive. We associate to F a symbolic dynamical system (Ω(F),σ), where σ is the shift homeo-morphism on the product space 0,1Z and Ω(F) is the closure of the orbit under σ of thecharacteristic function χF of F. Analytic properties of S(F) are related to dynamical prop-erties of the binary sequence χF . The Riemann-Lebesque lemma implies that if χF is recur-rent, or more specifically minimal, then S(F) is convex and hence, by the Krein-Milmantheorem, S(F) equals the closure of the convex hull of its set of extreme points Se(F). Inthis paper we (i) review the relationship between these concepts and the special case ofthe still open 1959 Kadison-Singer problem called Feichtinger’s conjecture for exponen-tial functions, (ii) derive partial characterizations of elements in Se(F), for minimal χF , interms of ergodic properties of (Ω(F),λ,σ), where λ is a σ− invariant probability measurewhose existence is ensured by the 1937 Krylov-Bogolyubov theorem, (iii) refine previousnumerical studies of the Morse-Thue minimal binary sequence by exploiting a new MAT-LAB algorithm for computing smallest eigenvalues of 4,000,000× 4,000,000 matrices,(iv) describe recent results characterizing S(F) for certain Bohr sets F related to quasicrys-tals, (v) extend these concepts to general discrete groups including those with Kazhdan’sT-property, such as SL(n,Z),n≥ 3, which can be characterized by several equivalent prop-erties such as: any sequence of positive definite functions converging to 1 uniformly oncompact subsets converges uniformly. This exotic property may be useful to construct acounterexample to the generalization of Feichtinger’s conjecture and hence provide a noanswer to the question of Kadison and Singer which they themselves tended to suspect.

Abstract : In this talk, we study two problems in fixed point theory. First, we investigatea class A of mappings on a closed convex subset C of a certain Banach space E such that
Fix(T ) := x ∈C : x = T x 6=∅ ∀T ∈ A ⇐⇒ C is bounded.
It follows from the well known Ray’s theorem that A includes all nonexpansive mappingsin the framework of Hilbert space. Second, we discuss the following problem: For a givencountable family of certain mappings, how can we construct a single mapping of the sametype such that its fixed-point set is identical to the intersection of the fixed-point sets of thefamily? This gives a positive answer to the question posed by Kohsaka and Takahashi.

Abstract: Signal transduction is the process by which an extracellular signal molecule
activates a membrane receptor that in turn alters intracellular molecules to stimulate a
cellular response. In this paper, we study a delay model of signaling pathways involving
G – proteins. We give sufficient conditions on the system parameters for the system's
stability using the Routh – Hurwitz criteria and prove the existence of limit cycles by
applying the Hopf bifurcation theorem. We investigate the effect of time delay on the
dynamic behaviors of the model for the signal transduction process. Finally, some
numerical simulations are given in support of our theoretical prediction.

Abstract : One of the serious problems in the medical profession in Thailand and the
global community is concerned with antibiotic-resistant pathogens. Inflection diseased
patients are increasingly at risk. Antibiotics have been widely used to treat patients, but
prolonged use of antibiotics could give rise to antibiotic-resistant pathogens. Antibiotic
resistance is the ability of bacteria to withstand drugs. Fewer drugs are available to cure our
patients. In this work, we propose and analyze a model for the interaction between drug
resistant and sensitive strains in terms of the solution’s existence and stability and the
existence of positive periodic solutions.

Abstract : In this paper, the uniformly convergent Fourier series is used to approximate
solutions of the second- order linear Volterra type integro-differential equations with
quasi-smooth coefficients. The solutions are obtained using a Galerkin method with the

Abstract : Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by a bacterial infection
with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and commonly affects the lungs. The bacteria are
resistant to dry and cold air, as well as to heat and chemicals in the air. However, an
exception is that the bacteria are not resistant to sunlight. TB is one of the most common
infectious diseases with about one-third of the world population currently infected, and
approximately nine million new cases develop yearly. This results in two million deaths,
which mainly occur in developing countries. Mathematical models are powerful tools in
formulating TB control strategies and establishing TB prevention goals. In this paper, we
formulate a model for the spread of tuberculosis in a human population. Based on
epidemiological status, the population is divided into three classes: susceptible (S),
infected (E), infectious (I).

Abstract: Deeper understanding of insulin kinetics is crucial for the control and treatment
of diabetes mellitus. It is clinically important to be able to identify pancreatic secretion of
insulin hormone during oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). An approach based on two-
compartment kinetics model for C-peptide and two-phase clearance of insulin kinetic
model for insulin, called extended combined model (ECM), was proposed by Watanabe et
al. to be an alternative approach for identification of the rate of pancreatic insulin secretion
and kinetic parameters. Hence, the aim in this work is to examine the accuracy of
estimation derived from the approach and the numerical method used. The data of
concentrations of insulin and C-peptide are generated by the ECM with known parameter
values and rate of secretion to replicate the data of insulin and C-peptide during OGTT.
Next, the approach is used to estimate kinetic parameters and secretory rate from the
generated data with added levels of error. Finally, the values of parameter estimation are
compared with known values used to generate the data. The result appears that the
approach is able to provide accurate parameter estimates and rate of secretion. Therefore,
the approach may apply to the practical experiments to reconstruct insulin secretion during
OGTT when insulin and C-peptide concentrations are measured.

Abstract: In this study, we estimate the parameters in a glucose/insulin nonlinear
differential model with GLP1-DPP4 interaction, describing the role of the Glucagon-like
peptide-1 and dipeptidyl-peptidase-4 on the glucose/insulin metabolism, by using the
Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method, which is used in a Bayesian setting, and
Generalized Least Square (GLS) method, which is used in the classical statistic
formulation. A comparison between the two methods are performed in terms of point and
interval parameter estimates. Our results show that MCMC is capable to estimate the
parameters in this model based on smaller bias and standard deviation.

Abstract: This paper studies the patient flow of the otolaryngology outpatient department
in one of the largest public hospital in Thailand. The problem in the current system is that
the patients’ waiting time in the system is long due to the doctor service process. To
improve the doctor process we proposed two different policies: shifting doctors’ schedule
and increasing number of doctors. The objective of this paper is to study the impact of
these policies on the system. Different scenarios have been tested using computer
simulation. Both methods reduce the waiting time of patients as well as the total time they
spend in the system. Moreover, our results show that shifting doctors’ schedule is more
effective in the otolaryngology outpatient department for our case study.

Abstract : We investigate the problem of robust exponential stability for uncertain neu-tral systems with discrete and distributed time-varying delays and nonlinear perturbations.Based on the combination of descriptor model transformation, decomposition technique ofcoefficient matrix, and utilization of zero equation and new Lyapunov functional, sufficientconditions for robust exponential stability are obtained and formulated in terms of linearmatrix inequalities (LMIs). The new stability conditions are less conservative and moregeneral than some existing results.

Abstract : A comparative study on three numerical methods, the semi-discrete finitedifference method, the Galerkin finite element method and the operator-splitting methodfor two-dimensional unsteady advection-diffusion problem is presented. For the operator-splitting method, the governing equation is slit into advection and diffusion equations andsolved by finite difference method and finite element method, respectively. For advection-dominated flow, the operator-splitting method is the best resolution. The semi-discretefinite difference method seems to give the best resolution for the diffusion-dominated flow.

Abstract : Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a retrovirus that targets the CD4
+ T
lymphocytes. When HIV infects other cells, it causes the most damage to the CD4+ T cells
by declining the cells and decreasing the resistance of the immune system. Mathematical
models of HIV infection which included distributed HIV virus delay are more accurate to
represent biological phenomena. Some models are formulated as a system of integro-
differential equations. A delayed HIV infected system with discrete distributed HIV delay
for the infected cells and virus population described by integral with a weak delay kernel is
considered.
In this paper, We apply a weak kernel technique to transform the system of
integro-differential equations with distributed time delay into the system of ordinary
differential equations with a constant time delay. By linearization the system at two
equilibrium points and analyzation of the associated characteristic equations, the
asymptotic stability of the disease-free equilibrium and endemic equilibrium are
investigated and Hopf bifurcation are demonstrated. Additionally, we use the mathematical
program in Matlab to compute and plot the graph of the numerical solutions.
It is shown that the introduction of time delay in the model has destabilizing effect
on the system and periodic solution can arise by Hopf bifurcation.

Abstract : Hemotopoiesis is the process by which red blood cells are produced and
regulated in the blood stream. The process is complex, with hematopoietic stem cells
(HSC) responding to a wide variety of cytokines and growth factors (GF). The system
contains three time delays, a time delay before proliferating HSC divide into non-
proliferating HSC, a time delay before release of type I growth factor and a time delay
before release of type II growth factor after stimulation by non-proliferating cells. In this paper, we consider a model consisting of five age-structured, time delay
ordinary differential equations for non-proliferating and proliferating HSC populations, for
populations of type I and type II growth factors, and for an age-structured time-delay
factor. The behavior of the system has been investigated both analytically and numerically
for a wide range of values of the three time delays. The Matlab software package has been
used to solve the system of equations numerically for both the zero and non-zero time
delay cases. It is found that the dynamical behavior of the model is very complicated with at
least five types of long-time behavior, namely, trivial and non-trivial steady states, limit
cycle with one local maximum and minimum per cycle, limit cycle with more than one
local maxima and minima per cycle, and chaotic-type behavior. For some special cases of
the time delays, analytical formulas have been derived for the Andronov-Hopf bifurcations
from the non-trivial steady state to a limit cycle with one local maximum and minimum per
cycle. The analytical results have been confirmed by direct numerical integration.

Abstract : Coral bleaching is a phenomenon of coral loss symbiotic algae zooxanthellae.
To assess bleaching responses to the fluctuating environment, the time courses of
zooxanthellae population must be quantified. Among several factors that influence the
observed bleaching, the sea surface temperature (SST) is considered as the most common
factors of thermal stress on coral reefs. In this study, we propose a mathematical model
of two competing species of zooxanthellae. The effects of SST and adaptation to
bleaching which is based on thermal tolerance are examined. We show that the model
exhibits the exchange of equilibria. The condition for a stable periodic solution is also
determined. We show that the dominant type of zooxanthellae can be switched under the
variation of SST and the thermal tolerance.

Abstract : Several mathematical methods have been used to solve the nonlinear partial
differential equations which are extensively applied to physics, chemistry and engineering
problems. The F–expansion method is a powerful technique and obtains an exact Jacobi elliptic function solution which gives many exact solitary wave and periodic solutions. The
Hirota–Ramani equation is a nonlinear third-order partial differential equation which
describes fluid physics, quantum field theory, and plasma physics.
In this paper, we apply the F–expansion method to construct the exact travelling
wave solutions of the Hirota–Ramani equation. The F–expansion method expresses a
solution function as a sum of another independent function and constants which are
determined the algebraic equations. This method obtains exact solitary wave and periodic
solutions for integrable nonlinear partial differential equations. It is easier and faster by
means of a symbolic computation. Therefore, we obtain the new exact Jacobi elliptic
function solutions for the Hirota–Ramani equation. After that, the Maple program is used
to compute and verify all exact solutions. Coupled examples of Hirota–Ramani with the
initial condition is presented the exact solutions and shown their graphs.
The benefit of the method is that it obtains exact solutions for nonlinear partial
differential equations with higher order. When, the solutions of this method write in terms
of Jacobi elliptic sn-functions, we can select the modulus m of the elliptic functions equals
to one. Then the solutions obtain hyperbolic tangent functions which represent the solitary
wave solutions.

Abstract : For a nonempty set X , let E be an arbitrary equivalence relation on X and T (X)the full transformation semigroup on X . We consider a subsemigroup of T (X) defined by
TE∗(X) = α ∈ T (X) : ∀x,y ∈ X ,(x,y) ∈ E⇔ (xα,yα) ∈ E
which is called the semigroup of transformation that preserve double direction equivalenceon X . In this paper, necessary and sufficient conditions for regularity, left regularity, rightregularity and completely regularity of elements in TE∗(X) have been given.

Abstract : In this paper, we study the pseudo-parabolic equation
ut − k4ut =4u+a(x)up x ∈ Rn, t > 0
with a nonnegative initial condition having a compact support and c|x|σ ≤ a(x) ≤ c∗|x|σwhere c,c∗ and σ >−2 are constants. We find that the characteristic of solutions dependson two interesting values of p. The nonnegative classical solution blows up in a finitetime when 1+(σ/n)+ < p < 1+(σ+2)/n regardless of the initial condition u0, whilethe nonnegative classical solution blows up in a finite time if p > 1+(σ+2)/n and u0 issufficiently large.

Abstract : The definition of an admitted Lie group of transformations for stochastic
differential equations has been already presented for first-order equations. The
transformation of the dependent variables involves time as well, and it has been proven that
Brownian motion is transformed to Brownian motion. In this paper we discuss this concept
to second-order stochastic differential equations and present some applications of
stochastic differential equations.

Abstract : A Bergman space H L2(B, dvα) is the space consisting of all holomorphicfunctions on the unit ball B which are square- integrable with respect to dvα where dvα =cα(1−|z|2)α. The space is non-zero when α >−1. However, these spaces can be extendedto the case −2 < α≤−1 by defining a generalized Bergman space
HL2(B, α) =
f ∈H L2(B, dvα+2) : z
d fdz∈H L2(B, dvα+2)
which HL2(B, α) = H L2(B, dvα) when α > −1 and HL2(B, α) is non-zero when−2 < α≤−1.
In this paper, we are interested in giving some equivalent conditions for a functionbeing in a generalized Bergman space.

For i = 1, 2, 3, letTi : C→ X be an asymptotically quasi-nonexpansive nonself mapping such thatF(T1)∩F(T2)∩F(T3) 6= /0. Let f :C→C be a contractive mapping and let an, bn, cn,dn,en and gn be sequences in [0,1]. Define xn, yn and zn by
