Miracle escape asshop is set on fireTWO men broke into a Corkcity charity shop and set fire toit while a woman lay sleepingin an overhead apartment thismorning.

The raiders first targeted a car in acar park behind the shop at the junc-tion of Commons Road and Popham’sRoad, and stole some items from it.

They then broke into the charityshop and also took some items from

three fire crews rushed to the sceneafter the woman’s call for help.

The woman had managed to escapewithout life-threatening injuries butwas taken by ambulance to the MercyUniversity Hospital for treatment.

One man was in custody today after

the incident.His alleged accomplice remained at

large, as gardaí tried to establish themotive for the incident.

Gardaí said this morning that oneman was arrested at the scene.

A forensics examination was carriedout at the scene.

Gardaí handed out leaflets tomotorists who passed through theCompass Quay area between9.45pm and 11pm last night.They also targeted motorists in thearea during the same time onWednesday night, while door-to-doorenquiries are also being conducted inthe locality.● Continued on page two.
