Reading comprehension

—What has changed in the past few years in Tangsa?

—In the past, there were no trees left in or around the village. But now trees grow thickly on all the hills around the village. Also the villagers there know the importance of trees.

Paragraph One

作业被她做完了。→ The homework was finished (by her).

→ People can cut a few of trees each year for firewood.

• 2. in order to: with a particular purpose (It can be replaced by ‘to’ or ‘so that ’.)

e.g. 1) I must work hard in order to pass the exam. 2) I must work hard to pass the exam. 3) I must work hard so that I can pass the exam.

※ in order to + Verb phrase to so that + clause

→ People had to walk many kilometers so that they could fetch wood.

• 3) fetch: go and get a person or thing and bring them back.

take : to carry someone or something from one place to another.

bring: to carry something to or towards a place.

★ → (fetch) e.g. Run and fetch the doctor! ← → (take) e.g. It’s time to take the children to school. ← (bring) e.g. Bring your books with you when you came.

• 4. The Passive Voice The Active Voice※ When it rained, the soil was carried away down the

hills and into the rivers.

→ When it rained, the rain carried away the soil down the hills and into the rivers.

Paragraph Three

certainly happen e.g. Make sure you get here before midnight. ※ make sure + clause• 5. 1.2 million = 1,200,000 Read as: 1) ‘one million two hundred thousand’ 2) ‘one point two million’ e.g. 7.58 million (7,580,000) Read as:1) ‘seven million five hundred and

eighty thousand’ 2) ‘seven point fifty-eight million’

e.g. Soldiers are expected to obey.
