Oratoire St JosephOratoire St Joseph

The gigantic St Joseph’s Oratory completed in 1960 and based on and around a 1916 church,

honors St Joseph, Canada’s patron saint.

The size of the Renaissance-style building is a marvel in itself and commands wonderful views

on the northern slope of Mont Royal.

was completed in 1962 and created to alleviate congestion and provide an escape from the harsh winter. It’s unique in the world, with 2000 shops in 29km of corridors, with hotels, restaurants, offices, cinemas, banks, convention centers and exhibition halls, all underground.

Add climate control and Metro stations throughout, and you’ve got a self-contained world, shielded from the frigidity (or sweltering heat) above. Stories abound of mole like Montreal residents going for weeks or even months without seeing the light of day.

You won’t miss signs for Poutine, French fries covered in cheddar curds and brown gravy and served with chicken or sausage. A favorite dessert is pudding chômeur (literally, ‘pudding for the unemployed’), a kind of sponge cake doused in a gooey, brown sugar sauce.
