Two Hundred Plus (200+) OTC Nail Treatments for

Fungal Nails

Dr. Robert Spalding, President MediNail Learning Center

Good News

• The Entrepreneur spirit is alive and well….

• Did you know that there are well over 230 topical nail fungus treatment products on the market that you can choose from?

• The labels can be very entertaining to read

The Bad News Scenario or “BS”The Bad News Scenario or “BS” is the American Public is confused as to what to do, buy or spend money on.

Promises, Promises

Approach for Hopeful Companies

• Find an active ingredient or approach • Build-a-Brand or design a “Catchy Name”• Trade off an Existing Brand Name

The Best Advice I can Give• The best, most accurate advice I can give after 20 years of practice is that any of these

OTC products are better than not treating the nail fungus problem; even with Vicks Vapo Rub. Many of these products can temporarily bleach the nail, soften the nail for trimming or simply improve the appearance but many of these topical products cannot cure nail fungus. The problem has to be properly diagnosed to treat for best results. Some nails are not fungal, but psoriasis, eczema, trauma or simple genetics.

• Only FDA approved topical and oral products/treatments in combination with FDA approved laser therapy give the best documented results. Only multi-therapy combinations of these FDA modalities and/or medical office dispensed topicals have the highest rate of cure in my experience.

• Most of the OTC treatments are less than 5% effective. Some companies have over promoted or inappropriately stated their claims of cures. Even the FDA treatments are not 100% effective. At the very best, the FDA therapies in combination are 70% effective . This would include ongoing yearly or periodic monitoring and prophylactic use of FDA topicals, orals and/or laser to prevent reoccurrence in many patient populations. Interdigital and plantar athletes foot is a major cause of nail fungus. You have to treat both the skin of the entire foot and nails for the nail fungus to resolve.

Disclaimer• Many listed antifungal creams were marketed or sold in online nail

treatment search categories.• Nearly 230 nail fungus or related nail treatments are listed but others

are periodically being added and some may be missing or rebranded.• Not all label's are readable or spelled correctly in the slide show• A few labels are repeated with different graphics• This is not a complete list of all treatments• All labels are copyrighted per each company• The intent of this presentation is to show the enormous international

product variety and extreme marketing of OTC topical antifungal nail treatments but not to comment on the effectiveness of any particular brand unless I have had direct experience with a product’s use or marketing.

Money Spent on Antifungal Treatments for nails

• The amount of money to try the following items for nail fungus of just one of most every OTC product listed you would have spent over $2000 with less than a 5% cure rate based on my OTC use experience depending when the treatment was started.

• The total antifungal nail treatment market is over a ($1 Billion) One Billion Dollar a year market.

• The Average Cost of a medical office based treatment with prescription based FDA approved topical, oral and including approved FDA Laser treatments could be as much as $1000 with up to a 70% cure rate based on my results.

• The reoccurrence rate of nail fungus is very high; over 40%• Topical treatments can last over one year and beyond

Nail Salons*Nail Salons contribute a large number of new nail fungal infection cases each year due four main reasons:

1. Poor disinfection protocols with contaminated instruments

2. Poor education as to what constitutes “normal nails”

3. Working out of their scope of practice by servicing clients or “diagnosing” clients with nail fungus

4. Nail techs are encouraged by clients to “treat” their fungal nails, thick nails or ingrown nails without physician referral and by dispensing or marketing “nail fungus” treatment products.

In Review• The market for fungal nail treatment is very active.

• There are significant problems with OTC fungal nail treatment product purchases. Not all nails that are dystrophic, discolored or have debris are always fungal in nature until you have a professional working diagnosis obtained by a good medical history backed up by a nail biopsy and/or nail culture. BAKO pathology labs is one of the foremost dermo-pathology labs in the country that provide those advanced identification services.

• Any of these products may help some individuals or the individual may perceive improvement depending on the respective pathology.

• Some products work much better than others for patients to obtain results. Some nail problems are well beyond the scope of topical treatments.

End Goal of Presentation

• To make podiatric, allopathic and osteopathic medical professionals, medical assistants, nursing staff, medical nail technicians, salon personnel and the general public aware of the numerous options to treat fungal nail problems.
