DearParentsandFamiliesoftheCoddleCreekSchoolCommunity,

OnSunday,severalstudentswhoattendCoddleCreekElementarywereinvolvedinagunaccident,

resultinginanaccidentalshooting.Thisincidentoccurredinoneofourlocalneighborhoodsand

involvestwoofourstudents.Becauseourstudentsareminorsandbecauseofprivacylaws,weare

obviouslynotallowedtogiveyouspecificinformationabouttheconditionofthestudentortheir

names.

Thepurposeoftheletteristoserveasanimportantreminderofthefollowing:

*DiscusswithchildrenthatitsNEVERoktoplaywithguns.

*Discusstheimportanceofgunsafetywithyourchildren(especiallyifyouhaveanytypeoffirearmsat

home).

*Remindyouasparentsoftheimportanceofkeepinganytypeofweaponssecuredinaguncabinetor

lockedareasothatchildrencanthaveaccesstothem.

*Informyouthatwewillhavecounselingavailableifyourchildhasconcernsandneedstotalkfurther

abouttheincident.

*Talkwithyourchildaboutwhentoreportthingstheymayhearpeopletalkingabout(relatedtoguns,

useofweapons,etc).

Asyoutalkwithyourchildrenaboutthis,pleaseencouragethemtohelpbynottellingstoriesorrumors

thatmayormaynotbetrue.Wetalkaboutthisinourbullyingtrainingsessionswiththem.Ifyourchild

isupsetaboutthissituationpleaseencouragethemtotelltheirteacherthattheyneedtoseea

counselortodiscusstheirconcerns.

Whilethisaccidentdidnothappenatschool,itsimportanttoknowthatyourchildissafewhileat

school.Wewillholdclassmeetingswithstudentsasnecessary.Pleasebethinkingofthefamiliesofthe

childreninvolvedinthisaccident,aswearesurethatbothfamiliesinvolvedareworriedandregretthat

thisaccidenthappened.
