Pride in his family and pride in quality Angus cattle – ask any Illinois Angus breeder and they’ll tell you that’s what drove Lynn Miller. Without a doubt, Lynn left his mark on the Angus business with his commitment, and contributions to youth and his local community. However, his greatest legacy may be the impact he made on the lives of others in the industry.

Dan Kiesewetter of Farmington said his family’s relationship with the Millers goes back as long as he can remember and his fondest memory of Lynn was that you could count on him for anything.

“Lynn was, without question, one of the best contributors and supporters to Illinois Angus and the Lamoine Valley Angus Association activities,” he said. “He wasn’t a man of many words, but was definitely a man of action and everyone appreciated and respected him for that.”

Lynn’s devotion to the Angus business spanned more than half a century and his family is continuing the legacy with the lessons he left behind.

Born in Ottawa and raised in the New Holland area, his legacy began with his family’s commitment to the livestock industry through raising dairy cattle and a few Herefords. But, it was his interest in raising Angus cattle that began a tradition for the Miller family.

Lynn’s daughter, Tracey, recalled her Dad’s love for Angus cattle, especially in the spring when calves were born and cattle were moved to green pastures, and the challenge began for another year to raise the next show champion.

assistant beef superintendent at the Logan County Fair; member of the Flach Memorial Day Show; member of the Logan County Farm Bureau; and a Logan County Calf Scramble committee member.

Lynn also bought and sold cattle in several Illinois association-sponsored Angus sales, including the Lamoine Valley Angus Sale and the Illinois Angus Futurity Sale.

“Lynn wanted to support the Illinois Angus business and you could always count on him to consign to sales and go home with a purchase at the end of the day,” Dan said. “He had a real passion for quality Angus cattle. He knew what he liked and wanted to purchase cattle that could improve his herd. I think he passed that down to his daughter and grandson because I see them doing the same thing.”

Chances are, as they continue their devotion to producing quality genetics and caring for their local cattle industry, Lynn Miller’s legacy and their family tradition will carry on for years to come.

“We can track our family’s first registered Angus cattle back to the early 1950s and it was just something Dad loved being a part of,” she said. “When I was growing up, he loved to take us to cattle shows and we exhibited at around 10 county fairs during the summer and at the state fair. My son has the same passion for Angus cattle and my Dad never missed one of his grandson’s shows – even if he had to drive several hours for the event.”

As a testament to his love of local agriculture, it’s only fitting that the story behind Lynn and his wife Donna’s 52-year marriage began at the Menard County Fair – where they met a few years before they married.

Family and the farm were the focus of Tracey’s parents from the beginning, but she said they also made sure to stay involved in their community. Donna was a beautician for many years and Lynn enjoyed working at the Peoria Union Stockyards on sale day, was a member of the National Guard, and refereed basketball games for nearly 20 years.

He was a lifetime member of the American Angus Association; a member of the Illinois Angus Association; a member of the Lamoine Valley Angus Association, where he was past president; member of the Logan County Angus Association, where he was past president; member of the Illinois Beef Association;
