Physical Geography The environment of South East Asia is mostly

rainforest (tropical wet).

Physical Geography Like Japan, most of the large Islands are

volcanic islands, part of the Ring of Fire..

Population Patterns In island South east Asia-which includes

Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore, East Timor, and the Philippines- mountainous island interiors are sparsely populated, while coastal areas are densely populated.

The People More than 370 million people live on the

many islands of the sub region.

The People Chinese traders and soldiers settled in

Brunei, Malaysia and Singapore.

Century.

coasts to the interior areas of Malaysia.

Colonization and Freedom During the 1500’s, the Dutch colonized

Indonesia.

Colonization and Freedom In 1521, Magellan reached the Philippines

(Homonhon Island).

Colonization and Freedom Christian King Rajah Humbon of Cebu welcomed

Magellan and asked him to help him against rival kings.

Colonization and Freedom Magellan was killed in the battle, and his body

kept as a trophy.

Colonization and Freedom In 1565, the Spanish sent the conquistador Miguel

Lopez de Legazpi, who named the country after King Philip II of Spain.
