SPOTLIGHT: BEST BREAKFAST — BEE HIVE RESTAURANT
The Bee Hive Restaurant is located in Montesano on the corner of Main and Pioneer.
Tradition is a big part of business at the Bee Hive in Monte-sano.
The diner, owned by Paul and Ralph Larson, prides itself on charming locals with good eats and a dining atmosphere that harkens back to simpler times.
“We’re an old-school diner and we don’t try to be some-thing we’re not,” said Paul Larson, who purchased the eatery in the nineties with his father, Ralph.
Winning in the category of best breakfast, a number of options not found at other locales make this restaurant, which Paul said has been open since 1934, a staple for those who aren’t afraid to eat a full-plate meal.
Swedish pancakes, ham and eggs, cheesy omelets and, something you won’t find at many other diners, razor clams and eggs, grace the Bee
Hive’s menu.The diner does a lot of
work in-house, preparing its own pork sausage brats and chicken fried steaks. The Bee Hive’s milkshakes are also hand-dipped.
Looking for something more with your breakfast? The Beehive also offers drinks on its breakfast menu, including a Bloody Mary and mimosa for those seeking a buzz with their bacon.
“There are still people that like to get a big meal – and we’re not afraid to have a Bloody Mary on our breakfast menu,” said Paul Larson.
What’s more is that the restaurant’s Swedish pancakes are made with Paul’s great grandma’s recipe, another way the Beehive sets itself apart.
“I don’t make up stories to put on the menu,” said Paul Larson. “When it says Grandma’s recipe, it’s not a made up story.”

CITY WELCOME SIGNAGE1ST PLACE
AberdeenThe City of Aberdeen is a historic com-
munity located in Grays Harbor County near the Pacific Coast of Washington. The region, rich in fish, wildlife and timber, supported a number of Native American communities as well as serving to make it attractive area for pioneers to settle in the mid-nineteenth century. Captain Robert Gray first discovered the harbor in May of 1792. Ultimately the city was founded in 1884 by local resident Samuel Benn, a pioneer visionary who saw the region’s tremendous potential.
The history of this area has been driv-en by the logging and fishing industries, although in the last few years there has been a concerted effort to replace these with an emphasis on tourism and desig-nating Aberdeen as the largest retail cen-ter on the Washington Coast.

SPOTLIGHT ON A WINNER — BEST WELCOME SIGNAGEThe City of Aberdeen took the top honors for Best Welcome Signage, thanks to signs such as this one at the east entrance to town. “Come As You Are” is a reference to a rock song written by the city’s most famous son, Kurt Cobain, who died in 1994. SPOTLIGHT: BEST BOWLING ALLEY — RAINIER LANES
For Rob Shaver Sr., running a business is about providing the customer with
the best service possible. And patrons of both his
Rainier Lanes locations in Aberdeen and Ocean Shores have responded by voting Rainier Lanes best Bowl-ing Center for Best of Twin Harbors in 2016.
“Bowling is bowling,” said Shaver Sr. “Service is what makes the difference.”
Rainier Lanes has league bowling, an arcade for youngsters, a restaurant, lounge, four party rooms and a banquet room. The Aberdeen location also has a nine-hole mini golf course on site.
Shaver has owned the Ab-erdeen location for 16 years and has been in charge of the Ocean Shores bowling alley for 18. He became owner of both after work-
ing in the corporate bowling world.
Shaver runs the bowling alleys with the help of his two sons, Robbie and Keith and his wife, Aldie.
For Shaver, recognition from loyal customers is just one side of the coin, say-ing patrons supporting the bowling alleys have been crucial to their success.
“Without them, it doesn’t matter what we do,” he said. Business is tough on the Harbor. You really have to work hard and smart to survive.”
Rainier Lanes not only provides quality service, said Shaver Sr., but also is consistent in what they do. The bowling alleys offer league play year-round, something that he says you can’t find everywhere.
“We’re consistent. People know what they’re going to get when they show up.” Rainier Lanes is located at 415 W. Heron St. in Aberdeen.

SPOTLIGHT: BEST PRINT SHOP — DUNSIRE PRINTERS
A store that endures three generations of family own-ership is likely to contend with changing technology,
and Dunsire Printers, Inc. is no stranger to that.
Since 1959, Dunsire Printers has served as a go-to for professional printing on the Harbor. It’s been awarded first place in Best of Twin Harbors 2016’s Print Shop category.
As far as Alex Dunsire’s con-cerned, “We can’t do it without our customers,” he said. “It doesn’t mat-ter how small they are or how big they are. They’re the ones that are keeping us in business.”
That’s been true for more than half a century. Alex Dunsire’s grand-father, Alex “Ike” Dunsire Sr. bought the business along with partners J. Blake Godfrey, Charlie Cowherd and Roy Randich from Marie Moe and her son’s estate. Ike Dunsire bought the business outright from his part-ners within a year.
Ike Dunsire’s son, A.M. “Sandy” Dunsire, began working for the family business when he was 14, and started full time before graduating
high school. He remains the owner today.
Sandy Dunsire’s son, Chris, joined the operation in 1999, and Chris’ brother, Alex Dunsire III, joined in 2014 after 22 years in the U.S. Air Force.
The printing industry has come a long way since then, and the rise in home printers, Chris Dunsire said, has proven a challenge. Still, he added, the company has tried to modernize its services to offer more than most customers can do at home.
Three generations as a family business has also meant plenty of time to cultivate many working relationships. Dunsire’s regulars, Alex Dunsire said, include Five Star Dealerships, Grays Harbor College and the Quinault Indian Nation.
“It’s a lot of fun knowing that the product we put out is marketing stuff for a lot of other companies around,” Chris Dunsire said. “So we want to put out a high-quality product to help all the other local businesses out and make their stuff look good, too.” Alex Dunsire, left, and Chris Dunsire of Dunsire Printing in Aberdeen.

Boyd and Carol Morrow have owned the Elma Variety Store since 1972.
SPOTLIGHT: BEST ART & CRAFTS SUPPLIES — ELMA VARIETY STORE
The Elma Variety Store, as owner Boyd Morrow puts it, “has everything.”
The Elma store was purchased by Morrow and his wife, Carol, in 1972 and has been offering patrons an eclectic array of items ever since.
The store has evolved over time as people’s wants have changed, said Boyd. Now, the store’s biggest seller is fabrics. But, the lo-cal emporium has a little bit of everything.
Elma Variety carries, fabric, toys, candy, seasonal items, greeting cards, party supplies, houseware items, cleaning supplies and hard-ware, to name a few.
The store is one of only a handful left in the state, said Boyd, as the variety shop business is struggling to keep itself open across
Washington. Support from local shoppers, as well as those from out of town, help to keep Elma Variety up and running.
“We get a lot of locals, and locals are sort of your bread and butter,” said Boyd, add-ing that he believes 60 per-cent of the store’s patrons aren’t from Elma.
The store is a go-to for passionate crafters, with roughly 7,000 bolts of fabric available to shoppers.
“If we weren’t doing the job right, the customers wouldn’t be coming in and I wouldn’t be in business,” said Boyd. “Our local cus-tomers are very loyal.”
Boyd was born on the Harbor, and he isn’t at all surprised of the support the store has gotten from loyal customers.
“Elma is just a good little town,” he said.

SPOTLIGHT: BEST LUMBER STORE — LEVEE LUMBER
Any Harborite build-ing a house should be able to find most everything they need
under one roof.Or three roofs, if you’re
counting Levee Lumber’s two other locations. The company, which has stores in Hoquiam, Westport and Ocean Shores, was awarded first place in the Lumber Store category for Best of Twin Harbors 2016.
Keith German, manager of the Hoquiam and Westport lo-cations, said the business began in 1984, when Jerry Erickson and Merrill Albert purchased Bayview Building Materials in Hoquiam and named it Levee Lumber. A few years later, Er-ickson became the sole owner and then sold the business to Tom Weber, its current owner, in 2007.
The store prides itself, German said, on its customer service, product knowledge
and, yes — supplying just about everything necessary to build a house from the ground up. Le-vee Lumber lives up to its name as a go-to lumber supplier, but also offers, in part, supplies for counter-tops, cabinets, framing, doors, windows, siding, roofing, electrical and plumbing.
The store, German added, sees a mix of clientele, from the do-it-yourselfer to professional contractors, and has several regulars from all categories.
The best part about the job, German said, is giving people the tools to improve their homes — or build them from scratch.
“Customer service, giving back to the community — those are all big things for us,” Ger-man said. “I enjoy watching or being involved in people’s projects from the ground up and watching people … build their homes and know we were part of that.” The staff at Levee Lumber in Hoquiam. The company also has stores in Ocean Shores and Westport.

It hasn’t taken long for word to get around that Wynooche Meats & Deli is a cut above when it comes to meat mar-
kets.The business opened just nine
months ago in Montesano, but it’s building a loyal customer base fueled by word of mouth. One of the big draws is its relationship with Painted Hills Natural Beef, a collection of about a half dozen family-run beef ranches in north central Oregon.
All the beef at Wynooche Meats & Deli comes from Painted Hills. It’s labeled as natural, not organic, but Painted Hills boasts that the meat doesn’t contain added hor-mones or antibiotics and cattle are not fed meat byproducts.
Wynooche Meats & Deli is owned by Craig and Rose Gallington. They raise cattle on their farm in the Wy-nooche Valley and have a custom meat cutting business separate from the Montesano shop. They know about meat. Craig has about
40 years experience cutting meat and Rose, although she doesn’t refer to herself as a butcher, has 16 years experience.
The retail shop (on Wynooche Street just down the street from Del’s Farm Supply) has a “custom twist,” Rose says, because they can make up just about any cut a customer wants. The shop also includes a deli with soup, sand-wiches and other specialties. The Gallingtons are slowly growing the business and building a niche that appeals to busy families. Already, you can come in and buy a meatloaf and twice-baked potatoes ready to pop in the oven and any day now they’re expanding that to include pasta meals and other offerings.
The beef is a little more expen-sive than what you will find in most supermarkets, but Rose Gallington says her customers tell her they’ve been spoiled by the Painted Hills beef. “Cheap and meat should never be used in the same sen-tence,” Rose said. Rose and Craig Gallington own Wynooche Meats & Deli in Montesano.

SPOTLIGHT: BEST OFFICE SUPPLY — ABERDEEN OFFICE EQUIPMENT
The staff at Aberdeen Office Equipment, which has roots on the Harbor dating back to 1939.
If any local business has been forced to evolve, it’s the one that started out selling and fixing
typewriters.That’s all Aberdeen Office
Supply did when it opened in 1939 as Typewriter Sales and Service, said Fred Scott, who owns the business now.
Originally opened by the Cosper family , the local relic occupied the Aberdeen Elks building downtown. It grew just a few years later into Aberdeen Office Equipment, Scott said. The store was awarded first place in the Office Supply/Equipment category for Best of Twin Harbors 2016.
The Scott family took over the business a few decades later, and Fred Scott has worked there since 1971.
In that time, the store has gone through a series of evolutions, beginning with
the move to office supplies beyond typewriters. A com-plete-line office dealer, the store offers most everything today’s office needs, includ-ing stationery and furniture.
And the store is still evolv-ing, stocking copiers and printers, and staying up to date, Scott said, remains a challenge.
The store also services and delivers its products, which gives them an edge when competing with larger chain corporations like Staples, Scott said.
“Staples has its own niche,” he said. “But we stock, with regard to over-night, over 50,000 products from out catalog, so any or-der placed one day, it’s here the next.”
Scott also touted his em-ployees’ years of experience, which, for some, amounts to four decades.

The store also offers just basic things that a customer might need whether they’re just passing through or a local. Perhaps it’s a new pair of socks, light bulb, lamp, towels, window shade, cleaning sup-plies, cookie cutter, muffin tin, pet toy, gar-den shovel, helium balloon or a congratula-

Little Hoquiam Childcare owner Susan Thompson in her Hoquiam home. The in-home daycare tied in first place with Wunderland Child Care, Inc. for Best of Twin Harbor 2016's Childcare Provider category.
SPOTLIGHT: BEST CHILDCARE PROVIDER — LITTLE HOQUIAM CHILDCARE
As the middle child with eight siblings, Susan Thompson has always been tak-
ing care of kids.Thompson, a Hoquiam
native, has operated Little Hoquiam Childcare out of her home for 27 years, includ-ing 12 of those years in her current home. The business has won The Best of Twin Harbors 2016’s award for Best Child Care, tying with Wunderland Childcare Inc.
“That’s a lot of diapers,” she said with a laugh.
Three decades in the busi-ness, Thompson said, is long enough to see two generations of families. Some people she cared for as children have re-turned with kids of their own.
Little Hoquiam Childcare, Thompson added, is a mem-ber of Early Achievers, a program within the state De-partment of Early Learning
that rates child care providers based on quality and offers coaching and resources to providers. The program, ac-cording to the department’s website, is optional for provid-ers to join.
Thompson also touts the fact that children under her care aren’t glued to screens.
“There’s no TV, there’s no computer time, there’s no electronics — we dance,” she said. “I’m almost 59 and I still do the hokey pokey.”
A Hoquiamite all her life, Thompson said only once did she try to move away from the area, when an opportunity to move to Olympia presented itself. But that fell through, and here the business — and Thompson’s own three children — have stayed ever since.
“I thought, ‘Well, I must be destined to stay here,’” she said. “It’s served me well.”

Dr. Tom Floch, D.C., opened Core Chiropractic in Montesano five years ago
SPOTLIGHT: BEST CHIROPRACTOR — TOM FLOCH OF CORE CHIROPRACTIC
Dr. Tom Floch, D.C., puts himself in the shoes of each patient he works
with.Floch, who opened Core
Chiropractic in Montesano five years ago, wants every patient he sees to get the absolute best care possible in a manner that is tailored to them individually.
“I truly try to treat my patients the way that I would want to be treated as a pa-tient,” he said. “I offer short-term treatment plans that are quick and effective for pain relief and I treat each of my patients as individuals with personalized chiroprac-tic care.”
Prior to opening Core Chiropractic, Floch worked as an associate for another chiropractor on the Harbor. Before pursuing a career in chiropractic medicine, Floch was involved in extreme
sports, which gave him an insight into the medical field.
“ I had my fair share of injuries,” he said. “These injuries introduced me to the medical field and developed my interest in helping people through chiropractic care.”
The Montesano chiroprac-tor provides chiropractic care using a number of dif-ferent techniques to fit each patient who seeks treatment. Soft tissue work, stretching and exercise is added into treatment plans when neces-sary, according to Floch.
“I have found that each person responds to differ-ent kinds of chiropractic adjustments. Therefore, I offer multiple forms of adjusting techniques and also incorporate soft tissue work, stretching and exercise when necessary,” said Floch.
Massage therapy is also of-fered at Core Chiropractic by Rosemarie Glaser, LMP.

SPOTLIGHT: BEST HOSPITAL — GRAYS HARBOR COMMUNITY HOSPITAL
For more than 70 years, Grays Harbor Community Hospital has been provid-ing medical care to Harbor
residents and the hospital plans on continuing to evolve with the needs of its patients.
Prior to the adoption of Grays Harbor Community Hospital, Aberdeen and Hoquiam both had separate hospitals before consolidat-ing in 1929. After financial problems forced Hoquiam General to close in 1941, a committee was formed and funds were secured and Grays Harbor Community Hospital came to be in 1945.
The hospital’s main campus was constructed in 1956. In 1988 the hospital purchased its east campus on North H Street.
“GHCH is committed to the health and wellness of the Pacific Coast region as well as the millions of visi-tors to our area,” said the hospital’s public relations director David Quigg. “Our quality scores have been nationally recognized, however it is the compassionate care that we
provide our patients during their most difficult time that keeps our patients choosing GHCH.”
The hospital offers a number of services to its patients, including, but not limited to, cardiac rehabilita-tion, rehabilitation services, surgery, a pediatric unit, nutrition services and diagnostic imaging.
GHCH is the only hospital in the coastal region with a birth center, delivering over 500 babies per year, according to Quigg. The hospital’s surgical services department also has lower infection rates than nearly all western Washington hospitals, regardless of size.
GHCH is a level III trauma center, the highest designation in the area, as well. In 2014 GHCH became a public hospital district.
“GHCH will continue to evolve as the needs our community evolves,” said Quigg. “We are continuing to recruit quality providers, grow our outpatient services, as well as upgrade our facility to ensure our community can continue to receive quality care close to home.” Grays Harbor Community Hospital.

The Roof Doctor is located at 2730 Simpson Ave. in Hoquiam.
SPOTLIGHT: BEST ROOFING CONTRACTOR — THE ROOF DOCTOR
The Grays Harbor climate keeps roofers busy — just ask the ones working at The Roof Doctor in
Hoquiam.Branch Manager Jimmy Holden
said his crew of 10 employees stays busy, and is contending with a workload that must schedule jobs three months out.
“It is obviously a very difficult location due to all the storms we see down here as opposed to inland,” he said. “There’s rarely a time when we don’t have anything to do.”
The Roof Doctor’s Aberdeen branch has been awarded first place in the Best of Twin Harbors 2016’s Roofing Contractor category.
Started in Olympia by Ken Slater in 1959, The Roof Doctor remains a family business that has since grown to eight locations in southwest Washington, as well as Tacoma and Bremerton. Nearly six decades later, Slater still remains the owner, Holden said.
The Roof Doctor’s services run the gamut in both jobs and materi-als, including cedar shake, compo-sition, metal, vinyl and torch down, Holden said. The company services both residential and commercial buildings.
The company’s equipment goes beyond what most other roofing contractors can provide, with its own lift, service and dump trucks, Holden added. Bringing a dump truck to a location avoids the need for renting a Dumpster that sits on a property until the job is com-pleted. Lift trucks allow workers to transport new material to a roof more efficiently than moving it up a ladder.
The company’s advantages, Hold-en added, haven’t gone unnoticed.
“One thing that I really do take pride in that I hear a lot from customers is, ‘We’ve called three different companies and you’re the only one that even called back let alone showed up to help us get our roof fixed,’” Holden said.
