Why Africa?
Africa: A hotbed of NREN Activity • Sub Saharan Africa has historically not
been well connected • As of two years ago, we had
– 1 low capacity (120 gig) cable serving all of South and West Africa
– No fiber in East Africa – Satellite connections dominate – Bandwidth costs $3000 - $12,000/megabit
• Connectivity is improving rapidly

Africa NRENs
• Enhanced capacity from new fiber cables is driving REN buildout on national and regional scales.
• Virtually every country (even Somalia) has REN activities
• Not many RENs yet in operation in Sub Saharan Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, and South Africa to date)
UbuntuNet Alliance • The regional REN in
eastern and southern Africa
• Non-profit association of member NRENs ! "#$%&'()'*+,-''"./"+0&.'()'"./(12(3-
'4"0"5'()'4&)63-'78+"0'()'73%39(-'71+"0&.'()''71:3;#(<=&-'+9">0&.'()'+93)>3-''?1;3%(+"0'()'?1;3%(3-'?@A0'()'?=>3)-'5"0"5'()'?1=./'8BC(D3-'5"+0"5'()'53):3)(3-'+"0@'()'@E3)>3'3)>'F87+"0'()'F3;#(3
• No intra-connectivity yet – AfricaConnect (EU funded)
to fix that

• West and Central African Regional REN – Still in the works – Benin, Burkina Faso,
Cameroon, Cote d'Ivoire, Gabon, Ghana, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Togo
– Will participate in AfricaConnect project
– NOC will be in Dakar, Senegal (SenRER)

Ghana • Ghanaian Academic and Research
Network (GARNET) – Founding members: UG, KNUST, UCC,
UDSL, UEW, UMaT
• Very close to operational status – Will start with 17 institutions, connecting
groups of 5 in a phased approach – Will leverage Vodafone’s MPLS cloud – Cost has been a slowing factor
• Intention is to connect to WACREN eventually
• In 2011 NSRC provided training, technical assistance, network equipment and books
GARNET
Kumasi, Ghana 2011
Network Startup Resource Center
• NSRC enhances network operations globally, making it easier for US scientists to collaborate with international partners
• Builds goodwill for NSF and US scientists collaborating with R&E sites and network training facilities throughout the less-connected areas of the world
