Social Determinants of Health

In aged care, when we are supporting older people we see effects on health from:

War experience

Lack of health care when younger

Lack of education and health literacy

Social/economic disadvantage

Social change – family, neighbourhoods

Family life

Trends

Older people living longer and being more educated than previous generations

Families less able/available to provide support

With longer life comes increased capacity to contribute to home and community but also increased risk of Dementia and chronic disease

Community life

Community Diversity

Valuing People

Aged Care Workforce

3.1% of the Australian workforce (352 145 people)

90% of carers are female

Most employed part time

Volunteers: about 3 million

Unpaid carers: 2.7 million (11% of the population)

Looming workforce shortage!

What is Australia doing about workforce?

Dementia aware people, service providers and workforce…

understand and meet need

promote self determination

respect, advocate for and champion older people in society

research future need

promote family & community connections

deliver good governance of resources
