“A robust follow-up and review mechanism for the implementation of the new 2030 Agenda for Sustainable
Development will require a solid framework of indicators and statistical data to monitor progress, inform
policy and ensure accountability of all stakeholders.”

“The SDGs reflect stakeholder expectations
as well as future policy direction at the
international, national and regional levels.”
SDG Compass
“While the SDGs are not legally binding, governments are
expected to take ownership and establish national frameworks
for the achievement of the 17 Goals.”
UN Sustainable Development Agenda
“The new Goals and targets will come into effect on 1 January 2016 and will guide the decisions we take over the
next fifteen years.”

Monitoring

Basic understanding
• 5 Step process is logical and
iterative
• Compass aids translation
to business perspective
• Framework to implement
SDGs in order to prepare for
coming national policies
• Compass helps to
understand that SDGs
represent future business
opportunities and
symbolize a new,
sustainable view of growth /
development
„SDG compass“ zeigt Potential der SDGs
und verdeutlicht Bedarf an Quantifizierung

• Baseline is all relevant
legislation, science base
needs to be integrated
• Impact assessment is
focused on benefits of the
company itself – inherent
value of sustainability
comes through relevant
stakeholder analysis
• Level of ambition does not

Benefits Challenges
SDG compass is designed to foster strategic alignment, enable integration of goals within the
business and guide reporting of company contribution to SDGS

Business
indicators?

targets?
Targets & indicators are designed
for countries, not business
Link to business context is indirect
– targets are not quantified
16
Beispiel: SDGs mit ökologischem Bezug
sind hauptsächlich qualitativ
65 related to
environmental
sustainability
• Targets are formulated using qualitative descriptions, e.g.
• „Improve“ / „Integrate“ / „Strengthen“
• Quantitative targets are often indistinctive, e.g.
• „all … leading to relevant and effective“ (SDG 4.1)
• „universal … access … to safe and affordable drinking
water for all“ (SDG 6.1)
• „universal access to affordable, reliable and modern
energy“ (SDG 7.1)
12%
quantitative
• Of these targets only 3% are quantitative
• 14% are „hybrid“ targets, comprising an indistinctive or
extremely broad quantitative aspect, e.g.
• “universal access to safe, inclusive and accessible,
green and public spaces” (SDG 11.7)
• Only 3% of these targets refer to science-based concepts
• “regulate … and implement science-based
management plans” (SDG 14.4)
88% of targets are formulated in a qualitative way
65 targets are related to environmental sustainability
3%
“60% of indicators with an environment component
do not have agreed methodology or data available
at the global level.”

18
Unsere Empfehlung an Unternehmen
