FORD has unveiled its updated Rangerbakkie in Thailand and its sporting designtweaks throughout, improved engines andthe automaker’s latest technologies.
The new Ranger will be launched inSouth Africa in the fourth quarter of 2015.Specification and prices will be confirmedcloser to launch.
At the front, it has a new trapezoidalgrille, new diod headlights, tweakedbumper and bonnet.
The Ranger can wade through 800mmof water, has 230mm ground clearance,28degree approach and 25degreedeparture angles.
For lowspeed torque or additionaldownhill braking drivers can engage thelowrange 4x4 and activate the electronic
rear differential. The Ranger has a towingcapability of up to 3500kg.
Driving assistance technologies:• Lanekeeping alert helps prevent the
driver from unintentionally drifting out ofa lane when driving at highspeeds.
• Adaptive cruise control makes use ofradar sensors to maintain both a presetspeed as well as a preset distance from thevehicle ahead. When the system detects avehicle ahead, it decelerates automatically to maintain a safe distance.
• Forward alert Gives drivers a visualand audible warning when the gap to avehicle ahead drops below a safe distance. The system also charges the brakes.
• Park assist uses sensors to detectobstacles and provide audible warningswhen the vehicle approaches obstructionsat low speeds.
• Tye pressure monitor alerting driverswhen tyre pressure is too low
• Electronic stability programme withrollover mitigation and trailer sway
• Driver impairment monitor uses acamera and onboard sensors to detect if
the driver is drowsy. If the system noticessigns such as drifting on the road andsudden corrective steering inputs, thesystem warns the driver with signals.
In markets where it is available,Emergency Assistance uses a Bluetoothpaired and connected phone to call localemergency services after a serious collision.
• Adaptive load control adjusts the
electronic stability control based on vehicle load
The new Ranger is equipped with hillassist, hilldescent control and emergencybrake assistance.
Powering the new ranger is choice offour engines (three diesel, one petrol) eachmated to either a sixspeed manual or autoand with stop/start fuelsaving.
The 3.2litre Duratorq fivecylinder
TDCi diesel has updated exhaust gasrecirculation to improve fuel efficiency,Ford says, by as much as 18%. The 3.2litrediesel is capable of 147kW/470Nm. The2.2litre fourcylinder diesel will be offered, depending on the market, in either118kW/385Nm guise or 96kW variant.
The new Ranger will be available withFord’s 2.5litre Duratec petrol capable of122kW/225Nm of torque.
Ford says its new Ranger has “advanced sounddeadening materials” forimproved insulation and cabinnoise reduction. The new Ranger will be equippedwith Sync 2, the latest generation of Ford’sincar connectivity. It allows drivers to usevoice commands, such as “temperature 20degrees”, “play AC/DC” or “I’m hungry” tocontrol the aircon, entertainment systemand satnav.
The new bakkie also sports a 24Vsocket.
The 2015 Ford Ranger will be built atthe automaker’s Silverton assembly plantnear Pretoria for distribution in Africa andEurope. Wheels24.

Ocean challengeon the cardsON Saturday 16 May at 6.30am, about 50swimmers will battle it out betweenDurban’s North Beach and Vetch’s Reefduring the fivekilometre Four ElementsOcean Challenge, now in its second year.Durban Lifesaving Club is the venue for registration and prizegiving.
This is not only about who has theslickest strokes in the water it’s aboutyouth development and creatingawareness for a great cause as well.
“The swim is not only physicallychallenging, but aims to challengepeople's perceptions of the ocean,” saidthe founder of Four Elements Conversation, Olivia Taylor (18).
“The swim primarily aims to createawareness about ocean degradation andto fund an environmental scholarshipcamp at the end of the year whencandidates apply and get chosen, based onvarious criteria including passion andpotential.”
Scheduled to take place in December, the awardees will be taught to beindependent young environmental
entrepreneurs during a fourdayadventure. It forms an integral part ofteenager Taylor’s goal to remind youngpeople that passion can lead to positivechange.
“Youth have the most incredible ability
to look past possible downfalls, allowingbrave ideas to be formed, which leads toaction and then to success. The secret islearning how to initiate change and thento remain optimistic when your confidencewavers,” she said.
All the action at the Ocean Challengewon't be reserved exclusively for theamphibious types, though. Nonswimmers can show their support for the preservation of the oceans by participating in awalk on the beach, in time with theswimmers, while doing a beach cleanup.TheseeffortsarebeingcoordinatedbytheDurban Girls’ College Environment Club.
There's also a special treat in store onthe day for children from LIV Village, aVerulambased orphanage. Four ElementsConservation will be facilitating a snorkelswim hosted by the I Am Water OceanConservation Trust on Vetch’s Reef forthese children.
