March 29, 2018
Dear Nicasio Families,
It is fun to see our kids enjoying our beautiful weather this week during recess and lunch. Next week will be busy as we head into Spring Break. Below are a few photos from Twin Day last Friday. I love the school spirit!
Tomorrow (Friday) is the final day of Superstar Health on campus to teach Puberty Ed to our 5th/6th graders and Sex Ed to our 7th/8th graders. Our guest teacher, Jennifer Devine, reports that students have done a great job of listening, learning and asking great questions.
Tomorrow we will also have a school assembly at 11:30 am in the library. Student council representatives will run the show and introduce the March Teacher of the Month and the April spirit day. Awards will be given to students who exemplified the March life skill courage and the April life skill, integrity, will be introduced. Integrity may be a tricky one for our younger students, but at Nicasio we define it as “doing the right thing even when no one is watching.” I will share photos from the assembly next week.
Next Wednesday, April 4th our board is conducting a budget workshop at 4 pm in the library, followed by their regular monthly meeting at 6 pm. All are welcome to attend.
Next Thursday, April 5th is Open House. Our staff has been working hard to display student work that highlights the teaching and learning from this school year. The evening begins at 6 pm with a Principal’s Welcome and Nicasio Parent Club meeting in the MPR. Please plan to attend and bring your ideas for how we can build our Parent Club and provide fun, community-building events for our kids next year. Then classrooms will be open. I always love watching students as they show off their work to their parents with pride. At 7 pm the Nicasio Community Talent Show will begin in the MPR. This will be a fun night you don’t want to miss!
All the best, Barbara

Rates of youth substance use in Marin County continue to be among the highest in California. We are facing new challenges with the legalization of cannabis, the ongoing epidemic of prescription drug use, and historically high rates of vaping and alcohol use among our youth. For over two decades, Matt Bellace, Ph.D., a clinical neuropsychologist, nationally recognized professional speaker and stand-up comedian, uses science and humor to convey his message to parents, youth and community members about making healthy choices, increasing resiliency in the face of stress and pursuing natural highs (e.g. laughter, meditation) as an alternative to substance use.
