Routine assessments guide progress and inform instruction, helping to speed up students’ mastery of essential skills. Weekly progress monitoring and Unit Tests are easy to integrate into limited time periods.
¿A qué iban a jugar?Lina era muy lista. Siempre pensaba juegos nuevos.

Spanish TKMake Connections Across Texts
Connect Guide children to make connections across texts. Let’s think about how the two stories we read this week are the same and different. We read City Mouse and Country Mouse, and The Best Place in the World. Where did these stories take place? (in the city and in the country). Are the characters the same or different? (different) How? (In one story the characters are two mice, and in the other story the characters are two boys) How were the endings alike? (the characters decided they liked their home and wanted to return there) Guide children to name other similarities and differences, as you list them on the board.

independent Writing Today you will write about something you learned from this week’s reading selections. Have children complete question 5 on p. 6 in their Student Work Text. Choose from the following topics:
• Life in the country• Life in the city
• Why the ______ is the best place to live
• Why drawing conclusions is important
• How to draw a conclusion
Have children check their writing by asking themselves these questions:• Did I begin each sentence with a capital letter?• Did I end each sentence with a period?
• Did I stay on the topic?
Más PracticaMore Practice
Have children share their sentences with the group. Write their sentences on the board and have children practice reading and writing each other’s sentences.

• ¿Qué juego aprendieron a jugar hace poco?

Expert authorship provides unique, research-based activities and a strong parent-school connection to engage students more, so they learn more.
Cinco oraciones importantes Five Important Sentences
Five Important Sentences are provided for every student selection. Each sentence is logical and cohesive; each provides a key idea from the selection.
How Five Important Sentences Build ComprehensionUsing and reusing Five Important Sentences helps students build the skills they need for comprehension. Five Important Sentences provide selection-based activities that focus on these important skills:
• Recalling facts and details
• Arranging events in sequence
• Identifying main idea and supporting details
• Identifying characters and setting
You can help your students build comprehension with the following activities. Notice that over time, students listen, manipulate sentences, and draw conclusions as they work toward comprehending what they have read. Match the activities with selections as you see fit.
Activity 1: Locate Sentences1 Read the selection aloud to model fluent reading to students. Have them follow
along as you read. Students may also read all or parts of the selection silently.
2 Have students locate each of the Five Important Sentences. These will be those that tell the story or present the important ideas and details of the selection. The sentences on each master are in the correct order. Discuss whether students agree with the choice of sentences. Which could they add or delete?
3 Be sure to clarify potential problems that may impede comprehension, such as pronouns, punctuation, and capitalization.
Activity 2: Sequence Events1. Read the selection aloud to students or have students read all or parts of the
selection silently. Discuss the sequence of events, thoughts, or ideas in the selection.
2. Cut apart the Five Important Sentences and mix the sentences in random order. Then have students order them correctly. (Note: Students can work with the sentences numbered or not, as you wish.)

Reading and Vocabulary Activities at Home
Reading ActivitiesUse the Student Reader:
• Read Aloud Read the selection aloud to your child to model fluent reading. Model reading “as if you were speaking.”
Options: As you read, have your child point to the words or read the text along with you.
• Paired Reading Reader one begins. Switch readers at the end of each page. Read the Student Reader aloud several times to increase speed and accuracy.
Provide Support: If your child misreads a word, help them decode it and have them reread the sentence.
• Comprehension Ask questions to check your child’s understanding.
During Reading: What have I read so far? Who is this story about? When does this story take place? Where does this story take place?
After Reading: What was this story about? What was the main idea? What did you learn?
Vocabulary ActivitiesUse the Word Cards and Photopalabras:
• Find and Match As you say each word, have the child find the word card for the word you are saying. Next, have them match the Word Card to the correct illustration, and then make a sentence using the word.
• Match and Say Put the Word Cards and Photopalabras face down. Mix them up. The first person can choose two cards. Look at them, and if they match, use the word in a sentence and keep both cards. The person with the most cards wins the game.
• Guess the Word Put the Word Cards and Photopalabras facing up. Describe a word, but do not use the word in your description. Have the child find the matching cards based on your description. Switch roles have your child describe the words.
