Whats a Sea cucumber?
Commonly known as balat in the
Philippines.
Belongs to the family of Echinoderms.
Beche-de-mer and trepang are names fordried sea cucumber.

HISTORY
The exploitation of sea cucumbers was
started by theC
hinese traders in the 16
th
century. These traders started to roam
around Asia to search for this echinoderm.
And they have been trading sea cucumbers
in Indonesia, Philippines and Hong Kong foryears.

In the latter part of the eighteenth century,
British traders began stopping in Jolo in the
Philippines where they traded firearms, Indian
cloth and opium for trepang which were later
sold to the Chinese.
At the height of the marine products trade in
the 1830s, as many as 68 000 slaves were
captured each year and handed to
the sultansand chiefs of Jolo who forced the slaves to dive
for pearl shell and trepang.

During this period, about 600 tonnes oftrepang were exported from Jolo each year.
The harvesting of huge amounts of trepang
in the mid 1800s saw a resurgence of heavy
exploitation in the 1980s and 1990s tosatisfy the demands fr om wealthy
consumers fr om Taiwan Pr ovince of China,
China Hong Kong SAR, southeastern China
and the Chinese communities fr om
Southeast Asia

Sea cucumbers are derived from the order
Aspidochirotida under two families,
Holothuriidae and Stichopodidae.
125 species of sea cucumbers, 52 arecommercially important.
