FALL/WINTER 2013
Alberto Alessi
After the bulimia of consumption (bulimia = the tendency
to eat obsessively, followed by eventual attempts to purge
the food consumed), which marked the 90s and contin-
ued on through the beginning of the new millennium, for
some time now, a wave of anorexia (anorexia = patholog-
ical refusal of food) has been rolling across Europe, or, it
could be said, across the world.
In five decades of experience working from my vantage
point here at the "Italian design factory", I have witnessed
very distinct and identifiable stages in the evolution of
consumer society: in the 70s, some degree of purchas-
ing power already existed and it was picking up strength
although there was a lack of both an extensive network
of sufficiently-prepared stores and an adequate supply
of aesthetically high-quality products; in the 80s, mar-
kets began opening up, particularly in Europe, to the
consumption of products bearing the traits of design
excellence, distribution networks got going and indus-
tries started updating their products in search of the new
"industrial beauty"; in the 90s, the bulimia in objects of de-
sire reached its peak. Then, starting in the early 2000s, it
began to feel like things were changing: with the gradual
cooling of the economy, a bitter chill settled over con-
sumption.
What should one propose to an anorexic market? Since
going on strike against customers is out of the question,
industries in general and specifically "Italian design facto-
ries" both have to reinvent themselves and reinvent what
they offer: quite the challenge, perhaps even the biggest
that I’ve ever faced in my career.

The collection of figurines making up the ‘Presepe’ (Crib)
by LPWK-Massimo Giacon has been enlarged: under
this year’s gold version of the ‘Presepe’, we find a donkey
and a greengrocer, a bagpiper and a piper joining in the
“Angels’ Band” choir.

My idea is to bring a series of proposals intended for chil-
dren, and for adults who play with children, into the world of
Alessi. This year we are presenting “Le Fiabe” (Fairy Tales).
Our first tale is “Cappuccetto Rosso” (Little Red Riding
Hood), which continues the series of figurines dedicated
to exploring story-telling with the addition of two sets for a
total of four statuettes: “Cappuccetto Rosso” and “Il Lupo”
(“The Wolf”), “La Nonna” (“The Grandmother”) and “Il Cac-
ciatore” (“The Hunter”).

Alberto Alessi
The idea for this series of figurines came from two teach-
ers, Isora Manghera and Vilma Cerutti, and from the book
they wrote about Dante Alighieri’s “Divina Commedia”
(“Divine Comedy”), conceived as a way to make this mas-
terpiece of world literature accessible to students like
theirs — elementary and middle school-aged youngsters
(usually quite busy in very different kinds of activities) —
but nonetheless precise in details and true to its literary
and historical references.
This wonderful initiative gave us the idea to design a col-
lection of small Alessi porcelain figurines, a sort of “Illus-
trated dictionary of emotions”, so well told by the Great
Poet in his work, which, in this new version, offers a chance
for reflection not only to students but also to those, like me
for example, who, until now, had archived the Divine Com-
edy among other textbooks of a distant past. After the
first group presented here (Dante, Virgil, Beatrice, Charon,
Paolo and Francesca, Minos), the intention is to gradually
add new characters over time until all of the Divine Come-
dy most popular characters have been included.

Claudia Raimondo
“The new range of breakfast colours is innovative in terms
of the research carried out on chromatic characterisa-
tions of Alessi products: it relates more to an activity than
it does to a collection of objects or merchandise.
That activity is namely ‘breakfast’: a daily ritual that wel-
comes the new habits we are all trying to introduce into a
way of life that is more economical yet at the same time,
also higher in quality. A ritual full of affection, it is less
formal and more nutritious than the other meals eaten
throughout the day.
This is the scene: everything needed for preparation is
right there on the table, along with the serving utensils; all
in one place, prepared fresh, just the way you want it, on
the spot; the preparation is part of the ritual.
The colours themselves allude to the natural tones of the
freshest and most nutritious foods
The metal’s new finishes create a relationship between
sight and touch through the effects of the material. The
improved, high-performance Super White finish utilises
high-tech particles that make the surface water-repellent
like the leaves of water lilies; Native Biscuit has a particular
matte effect and archaic texture that recalls terra cotta
and bread.”

BirilloPiero Lissoni
Alberto Alessi
I consider Piero Lissoni to be the worthy staff bearer of
contemporary Lombard Classicism in design. Piero is a
neo-minimalist architect capable of endowing his cre-
ations with all-Italian elegance and sex appeal, as demon-
strated by the “Birillo” series that, in 2010, was the first
complete collection of objects for the bathroom designed
for our catalogue. The series has now been completed
with some interesting typologies. A new version in dark
grey is also being presented in this season.

The addition of a thermoplastic resin Bowl with a diam-
eter of 21 cm. allows us (as was done in 2012 with the 29

bowl into a salad bowl. The Bowl is also adapted for the
"The Rose" fruit bowl.

The “Mami XL” glasses are the result of redesigning the
current series that has been in production since 2003, and
to which the following modifications have been added: the
considerably more generous size, the material (crystalline
glass instead of crystal) and the price (much lower).

Nautilus is a mollusk from the cephalopod family. Consid-
ered extinct based on the discovery of fossils dating back
to the Paleozoic Era, only in 1829 was it observed alive for
the first time, and therefore classified as a living fossil. Its
shell, imported through trade with the East Indies, was
well known and used in jewelry as early as the seven-
teenth century. The shell’s highly characteristic structure
was the inspiration for the “Trinity” Bowl: every year anoth-
er chambre is added to its shell, producing a beautiful, du-
rable and lightweight spiral. The young Australian design-
er’s intent was to blend the beauty of a natural structure
with modern manufacturing processes.

Variations on the “La Stanza dello Scirocco” theme, de-
signed for the world of jewelry, is especially tempting for
an industry like ours, which works mainly on decorative
items for the home and kitchen. These new pieces of jew-

Come away with me
You can never ever run away by yourself,
You do it with someone else
With your own soul
or with your lifelong soul mate,
in search of that
nebulous and unattainable.
Come away with me tells softly
of a passionate desire:
the bold and shy declaration of escape
with the most beautiful and elusive woman in the world.
And stubbornly chasing after freedom,
it flows quickly through ones fingers
like the most precious of moments,
those that will never return ...

ulosa.
Sandro Chia
This tray marks the beginning of Alessi’s collaboration with
Sandro Chia, one of the best known Italian artists in the world.
Born in Florence in 1946, Chia moved to Rome in 1970 where,
after a period of experimentation along the lines of conceptu-
al art, he gravitated toward the manuality of painting. In 1979,
Achille Bonito Oliva identified his work with a new trend at the
time called Transavanguardia and invited him to participate
in the exhibitions he curated in order to assert the movement
internationally. In his paintings, the body’s sensuality and the
vitality of nature are celebrated in the exuberance of increas-
ingly monumental figures, which then find concrete reso-
lution in bronze. In his work, the dialogue with iconographic
themes, motifs and techniques of art history is intensified and
re-elaborated with an entirely personal, light-hearted irony.
Alberto Alessi
A tray is a tray, a plate is a plate, a fork is a fork, but not to us…
not to our tray and myself. Even though it’s part of a string of
mass-produced identical objects, our tray thinks it’s unique
and I think I know why. It all begins with a drawing, a tangle
of concentric marks on a sheet of paper, perhaps a cosmic
vortex, a nebula. Gradually, an object takes shape; gradually
it appears in all its details as a tray, our tray. Moving from the
world of drawing to the world of production, often, an object
becomes anxious. Our tray knows that mass production is
to an object like a mirror is to people, simply multiplying their
uniqueness. Comforted by this thought, our tray isn’t anx-
ious at all and firmly thinks of itself as a unique being.

Odile Decq studied architecture at the Universities of Rennes and Paris. She is one of the few women architects to have received some of the most presti-gious awards in her profession, from the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 1996 to the recent Designer of the Year at the Salon Maison & Objet 2013. She is internationally known for always having fought, in this world of men, to express her sensorial and protean vision that continue to redefine the boundaries of her profession and which she has called “hypertension", meaning the fact that a space should make us move, i.e. it should put us “in tension". On her idea of design she explains, “I am interested in some aspects of de-sign: I do not like design when it is simply associated with an idea of ‘concept’ and that you should believe in it just because it’s a ‘concept’. I like it when an object that is offered to me is both a super-idea, very simple and at the same time nice to look at. For me, design is this: reinvention heading towards something essen-tial. “Alice” is a tray that is as simple as a rectangle, as complex as a diagonal, flat so you can look at the world through a mirror.”

Through an iconic and emotive identity, “Sushi” cele-
brates the tool that produces one of nature’s most pow-
erful and admired elements: Fire. Sleek, simple and fluid
shapes, characterise an object full of collective-memory,
comfort and beauty. Its body, colours and material com-
binations emphasise its domestic nature, reminding us of
the warmth and emotiveness present in home-applianc-

in a compact, pocket sized product, suitable for either do-

Bognanco is one of the seven valleys in Ossola, located in the far north of Piedmont
not far from Crusinallo. Here, according to legend, in 1863 a shepherdess stopped
to drink from natural spring water gurgling up from a rock on the banks of the river
Bogna. She found that the water had a strange taste; it almost stung and seemed
like it "was burning". She spoke of it to the village priest who began selling it un-
der the name " Bognanco Gazosa water." Starting in the early 1900s, the original
company — later transformed into a joint-stock company called ‘Acque e Terme
di Bognanco’ (‘Water and Thermal Baths of Bognanco’) — was all the fashion for
a long period, establishing a major spa complex, constructing several hotels and
distributing internationally as far away as America. In recent decades, the Water
and Thermal Baths of Bognanco, with its belle époque charm, remained sidelined
during the boom in the mineral water business, until the Greek entrepreneur Har-
labos Melenos took over operations with a winning plan to highlight the special
qualities of this completely natural water, thus earning himself a well-deserved
niche position in the market. Melenos came to us to design the bottle, something
that, as big fans of our beloved land, we have done willingly, entrusting the project
to Giovanni Alessi Anghini.
