COMPUTER HARDWARE

PERIPHERALS

PERIPHERALA Peripheral device is generally defined as any auxiliary device such as a computer mouse or keyboard that connects to and works with the computer in some way.

TYPES OF PERIPHERAL DEVICES

INPUT DEVICES OUTPUT DEVICES STORAGE DEVICES COMMUNICATION DEVICES

INPUT PERIPHERAL DEVICES

KEYBOARD MOUSE MICROPHONE JOYSTICK WEBCAM GAME CONTROLLER LIGHT PEN TOUCH SENSITIVE PAD TOUCH SCREEN SCANER

KEYBOARD MOUSE MICROPHONE

A computer keyboard is an input device used to enter characters and functions into the computer system by pressing buttons, or keys. It is the primary device used to enter text. A keyboard typically contains keys for individual letters, numbers and special characters, as well as keys for specific functions.

A computer mouse is an input device that is most often used with a personal computer. Moving a mouse along a flat surface can move the on-screen cursor to different items on the screen. Items can be moved or selected by pressing the mouse buttons (called clicking).

A device containing a transducer for converting sound waves into electrical signals that can then be amplified, transmitted, and output through a speaker

JOYSTICK WEBCAM GAME CONTROLLER  A joystick is a

cursor control device used in computer games.

A video camera connected to a computer, allowing its images to be seen by Internet users.

A game controller is a device used with games or entertainment systems to provide input to a video game, typically to control an object or character in the game.

LIGHT PEN TOUCH SENSITIVE TOUCHSCREEN PAD

A light pen is a computer input device in the form of a light-sensitive wand used in conjunction with a computer's CRT display. It allows the user to point to displayed objects or draw on the screen in a similar way to a touch screen but with greater positional accuracy.

A small, touch-sensitive pad used as a pointing device on some portable computers. By moving a finger or other object along the pad, you can move the pointer on the display screen. And you click by tapping the pad.

A display device which allows the user to interact with a computer by touching areas on the screen.

SCANER

A scanner is an input device that scans documents and images, which can be imported into a computer.

Speaker is defined as an electrical device used to make sound or music louder.

A computer monitor is an electronic device that shows pictures. Monitors often look similar to televisions

A printer is an external hardware device responsible for taking computer data and generating a hard copy of that data. Printers are one of the most used peripherals on computers and are commonly used to print text, images, and photos.

LCD PROJECTOR HEADPHONESLCD (liquid crystal display) is the technology used for displays in notebook and other smaller computers.

A projector is a device that uses light and lenses to take an image and project a magnified image onto a larger screen or wall.

a device consisting of a pair of earphones joined by a band placed over the head, for listening to audio signals such as music or speech.

STORAGE PERIPHERAL DEVICES

CD/DVD Floppy Disk USB

CD/DVD Floppy disk USB

A compact disc (CD) is a small, portable, round medium made of molded polymer for electronically recording, storing, and playing back audio, video, text, and other information in digital form.

A flexible plastic disk coated with magnetic material and covered by a protective jacket, used for storing data.

A USB drive also known as a flash drive or keychain drive is a plug and play portable storage device that uses flash memory and is lightweight enough to attach to a keychain. A USB drive can be used in place of a floppy disk, Zip drive disk or CD.

PRINTERS

What is a printer? An external hardware device

responsible for taking computer data and generating a hard copy of that data. Printers are one of the most commonly used peripherals and they print text and still images on the paper.

Printers

Impact Printers Non-Impact Printers

Daisywheel

Dot-Matrix Inkjet

Thermal Laser

“Impact Printer” These printers have

a mechanism that touches the paper to create an image. These printers work by banging a print head containing a number of metal pins which strike an inked ribbon placed between the print head and the paper.

18

“Non-Impact Printers” These printers create

an image on the print medium without the use of force. They don’t touch the paper while creating an image. Non-impact printers are much quieter than impact printers as they don’t strike the paper.

19

“Dot Matrix Printer”

The term dot matrix refers to the process of placing dots to form an image.

Its speed is usually 30 to 550 characters per second (cps).

This is the cheapest and the most noisy printer and has a low print quality. Dot Matrix were 1st introduced by Centronics in 1970.

20

“Daisy Wheel Printer”

A daisy wheel printer is basically an impact printer consisting of a wheel and attached extensions on which molded metal characters are mounted. A daisy wheel printer produces letter quality print and it can’t produce graphics output.

21

“Ink-Jet Printer” It is a non-impact

printer producing a high quality print. A standard Inkjet printer has a resolution of 300dpi. Newer models have further improved dpi. Inkjet printers were introduced in the later half of 1980s and are very popular owing to their extra-ordinary performance.

22

Thermal Printer

Thermal printers are in-expensive printers mostly used in fax machines. The Thermal printers are further classified into two types.

(1) Electro thermal printers.

(2) Thermal Wax printers.

23

“Laser Printer”

Laser printers use very advanced technology and produce a high quality output. Laser printers can also produce high quality graphics images.

Resolution is 600 to 1200dpi.

24

“Multi-function printer”

A multi function Printer abbreviated as MFP is an all purpose device that prints, faxes, copies and scans. A single multi function printer can replace several bulky devices. A multi function printer is also known as AIO. These printers use inkjet technology and provide high quality print but at slow speed.

25

“Plotter” A large scale printer

which is very accurate in producing engineering drawings and architectural blueprints.

Two types of plotters are flatbed and drum.

Flatbed plotters are horizontally aligned while drum plotters are vertically positioned.
