DESCRIPTION

This is an idea for how we can work to improve the teacher training models which are currently being implemented in Cambodia, and many other places around the world.

BREAKING THE PATTERN Teacher Training Supporting Motivated Teachers And Promoting Impact

THE PROBLEM

THE PROBLEM Almost every NGO and Teacher Training Program in Cambodia is…

PAYING $$$

people to attend trainings

RIGHT NOW:

Or USE the training

And if they don’t use the training, we STILL pay them and give more training!

We need to CHANGE this pattern.

LEARN DO BENEFIT

What might this model look like?

It would need to benefit and motivate all parties:

Imagine: A learning center for MOTIVATED TEACHERS

A schedule of classes of many different levels

Motivated Teacher Classes

Math:Grades 1-3 Level 1

Grades 1-3 Level 2

Grades 4-6Literacy Techniques:

Reading Level 1

Reading Level 2

REMEMBER: MOTIVATED TEACHERS ONLY!

The teacher would ONLY be able to join if they had 90% attendance or higher for the 3 months prior to the class.

We would provide a substitute teacher for the class

Teachers must also attend a 1 day “how to prepare for a substitute teacher” class

The teacher would attend the class AND GET NO PER DIEM $

Each teacher would have a card which stated how many kilometers their house is from the training center.

AFTER the day's class, the teacher could go to the Teacher Gas Pump

AFTER the day's class, the teacher could go to the Teacher Gas Pump

and be given a small amount of gas equivalent to the gas used to come/go from their home (excluding the first 2km, so those living within 2km would not receive gas)

IN ORDER TO PASS, TEACHERS MUST DO TWO THINGS

ATTEND ALL CLASSES IN THE SERIES.

#1:

HAVE A TEACHER TRAINER EVALUATE THEIR IMPLEMENTATION OF THEIR LEARNING IN THE CLASSROOM.

#2:

IF A TEACHER PASSED THE CLASS, THEY GET THREE BENEFITS

THEY GET A CERTIFICATE.

#1:  In Cambodia, certificates are important.

THEY GET PAID.

#2:  This could be the same amount as the per diem, thereby just deferring our payment to reflect the impact. Or the equivalent of lost income from days in training.

Payment might increase slightly based on class level.

THEY GET POINTS.

#3:  Each "motivated teacher" would earn a special card after taking their first class.  Each class would be worth a number of points (eg. level 1 classes = 1 point, level 2 classes = 2 points, etc).

Once a teacher has received 10 points, they move up a level.

Higher Level Cards = Higher Level Benefits.

Principals would benefit from the system too.

There would be administrator training options which also gain benefits + they would get money to use to support their school, variable depending on the number of teachers in their school and principals who were part of the program could gain access to the teacher supplies as well.

Principal leadership and participation in the training design/implementation schedule/etc will be necessary for success!

School support committees and the students could also benefit further from more trained teachers, besides just better classes.

Schools that had X% of Level C teachers can have a higher maximum amount of support available to them through our school support committee budgets.

District Office of Education employees would benefit as they would co-teach with our teacher trainers.

GOALS

Give motivated teachers access to high quality training and reward those teachers who put their learning to use

#1:

Developing teacher trainers for the continuation of the program

#2:

Motivating positive impacts and breaking the cycle of being paid to "show up"

#3:

Let's support motivated teachers to support motivated students to improve their communities.
