CARIBIC meteorological supportUpdate

Peter van Velthoven, KNMI

Status: complete up to June 2007

WAS-trajectories8 day backward trajectories every 6 seconds (0.1 min)

WAS-samples are taken within a minute so the trajectories stick very close together, therefore:

15 additional trajectories are calculated in a cube centred around the sample to indicate uncertainty.

Flight 186/189 April 2007PV remnant

Flight 190/193 May 2007Close to tropopause (TP) in “high” Subtropical TP break sampled at 2 levels

Flight 178/181 June 2007 Subtropical TP break sampled at 2 levels

Tracer signatures?

Summary Frankfurt-Canton-Manila

• Frequent sampling of subtropical tropopause break

• Examples of flying in/above fold Frankfurt to/from Canton

• Sometimes strong subtropial (blocking) highs over Asia

• Tibetan mountains seem to be preferred location for folds
