Background

• In-house digitisation service for Falmouth University and University of Exeter, Penryn Campus

• Transferred to library in 2010• In-house system (Dig-Res) developed for

managing scans• All Exeter scans added to PackTracker

Challenges: Rollover and Reporting

• PDFs sent to straight academics• No record of module • No mechanism for tracking which scans still in use • Time consuming inventory of VLE to update records

Challenges: Compliance with CLA

• Proliferation of checks to be carried out• Demonstrating compliance• Clarity for staff over what is permitted

Challenges: Maintaining in-house system

• Reliant on support from one person • Different authentication screen• In need of more development e.g. request

form, usage statistics

TADC Business Case

• Improving management of scans• Speeding up request and scanning

process• Synergy with Reading List Module• Making requesting easy for staff• Getting away from being “Copyright

Police”

Benefits

• Processing scans – smoother and quicker • Speedy delivery to lecturers• Ability to deal with peak demand• Number of scans processed doubled in

first nine months

Benefits

• Availability of usage statistics• Additional information eg number of

scans rejected

Issues with new system

• Student numbers – inaccurate/ unknown when lists being set up

• Restrictions on PDFs • Downloading to tablets/ iPads/ Editing/

Expiring

• Additional log-ins

Other issues

• Reading list integration

• Still using old systems for Exeter scans

• Dealing with changes to US publishers

Hopes for the future

• Smooth rollover and process for contacting lecturers

• Greater integration with reading list rollover

• More online-friendly access• More staff engagement via Reading List

system
