City of Canal Winchester
Hello Canal Winchester! Where’s
the snow? Not that I really think we
need any because it sure is nice hav-
ing 60 degree weather and bright
sunshine in early March. The
groundhog said an early spring is on
its way and that means fewer pot-
holes in our streets. Speaking of
spring and streets - the largest project for the 2020 Street
Program will be the paving of Gender Road from US 33 to
just short of the roundabout at Lithopolis Rd. This project,
which will also include street signal upgrades, will be
shared with ODOT with our share of the cost estimated to
be just over $375,000. Another significant project will be
from just east of Wal-Mart’s main entry on West Waterloo
Street to Chesterville Drive. Other street projects will occur
within subdivisions. In total, we will be spending close to
one million dollars on street work this year, the largest
amount in city history.
One street has already been completed - the extension of
Bigerton Bend from West Waterloo to Gender Road. The
extension of this street opens a new horizon for those who
own street-legal golf carts, allowing them to travel to every
retail shop, restaurants, grocery store and service center
along the Gender Road corridor, those within the Wal-Mart
shopping area, and all businesses on West Waterloo in the
area of Aldi, Starbucks, O’Charleys, Firestone, Goodwill and
others. Street-legal golf carts are allowed to travel on
streets of 25mph or under and may cross streets of 35mph
when traveling on a legal street. All residential subdivisions
in Canal Winchester are 25mph and legal for travel.
If you haven’t heard yet, the city of Canal Winchester pur-
chased the former Bob McDorman Automotive Museum
building in February. We are now in the process of review-
ing proposals from four contractors for the construction of
the interior as well as some exterior modifications. We an-
ticipate awarding the contract in Mid-June pending council
approval. After construction is complete, we anticipate a
move in date of February 2021. This building will serve as
the new home of the City Municipal Building, the Commu-
nity Center and potentially the Columbus Metropolitan
Library. This move will also allow us to move the Sheriffs
Sub-station to the current municipal building to give them
more space, more accessibility, and off-street parking for
cruisers and personal vehicles. Once all of these moves are
made, the current community center (which has been
showing its age and deteriorating) will be demolished and
approximately 50 new parking spots will be constructed,
giving downtown shoppers and business employees more
parking choices all hours of the day.
Again, another busy year here in Canal Winchester, “The
Greatest Little City in Ohio”.

Census 2020 — By April 1, 2020, every home in the United States will
receive an invitation to participate in the 2020 Census. There are three
ways to respond to the Census: online, by phone, and by mail.
In mid-March, households will begin receiving official Census Bureau
mail with simple instructions on how to respond to the 2020 Census.
This year, 2020, marks the first Census in U.S. history that allows, and in
fact encourages, responses via the internet.
If you do not have internet access at home, you may still fill out the
Census questionnaire online by visiting a Questionnaire Assistance Cen-
ter. Questionnaire Assistance Centers are public locations made availa-
ble by local agencies, and are not staffed by the U.S. Census Bureau.
Staff in these locations are not employees of the U.S. Census Bureau
and are therefore not permitted to collect responses - and are discour-
aged from assisting with responses. Computers are available for public
use, however, and are offered as a courtesy to allow individuals to fill
out their own questionnaires.
Thanks to the helpfulness of Canal Winchester Local Schools (who
loaned four internet-ready laptops for this effort), the Frances Steube
Community/Senior Center’s (22 S. Trine) library has been set up as a
Partner-lead Questionnaire Assistance Center. The Community Center’s
normal operating hours are Monday-Friday , 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Public use of the computers to complete the Census questionnaire will
be permitted on weekdays beginning March 13, during normal operat-
ing hours.
Additionally, the Canal Winchester branch (115 Franklin) of the Colum-
bus Metropolitan Library, along with all CML libraries, will have a com-
puter set aside starting March 12 for members of the community to use
to fill out their Census questionnaire. People will not need a library card
to use this computer. The Canal Winchester branch library is open from
12:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 12:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Friday & Saturday. The branch is closed on Sunday.

Stormwater Awareness Only Rain Down the Drain — Do you ever notice the storm drains along the side of the street as you’re driving? When it
rains, water running off our roofs, driveways, sidewalks, and parking lots into our streets is directed into these storm drains and be-gins its journey to the nearest waterway. Often this is a direct journey, with the storm sewer running straight to a river or stream. Stormwater picks up oil, other automobile fluids, trash, fertilizer and other pollutants and in many areas is dis-charged untreated into our streams. Even when this water passes through a pond or other stormwater feature, pollu-tants are not entirely removed and still make their way to our waterways.
We swim, wade, kayak and fish and in these rivers and streams. Moreover, people rely on water from these water bodies for their drinking water. The vast majority of people in the Columbus metropolitan area drink water taken from our rivers and streams. The more pollutants that go into our streams, the more money we have to spend to clean the wa-ter for drinking.

Reducing pollution is everyone’s job. Keeping stormwater from pol-luting our streams depends on all of us. Only rain should go down a storm drain. It’s not just a saying or a good idea. It is the law. What can we do?
Sweep grass clippings and lawn care products back onto the lawn.
Pick up trash.
Wash your car at a commercial car wash.
Absorb and clean up and auto fluid spills.
Fix leaking automobiles.
Use drip pans to catch engine oil and other pollutants while repairing cars.
Recycle used motor oil.
Sweep driveways clean instead of hosing them down.
When walking your pet remember to pick up the waste.
Record and report illegal dumping down storm drains.
Don't dump waste into storm drains.
Water your lawn by hand, or adjust sprinklers to avoid over-watering. If any water flows off your lawn, you're using too much water.
