EWSLETTE N R GOING FORWARD TOGETHER FOR THE FUTURE
LION President Ken with the Chairman of North West Leicestershire and District Council and District Governor
Lion John Chambers
LION President Ken Garner presents a 35-year Service Pin to Lion Anthony Harris
ASHBY-DE-LA-ZOUCH AND COALVILLE LIONS
“STATUTES” SPECIAL EVENT ASHBY-DE-LA-ZOUCH held special events during
September this year, to mark the 800th
anniversary of its “Statutes”. There had been
Talks, Film Nights, Street Art and Exhibitions.
“Statutes” is an important part of Ashby’s rich
history, but few people who enjoy the rides
nowadays have any idea why the “Statutes”
exist.
The Charter, a gift from Henry lll to Alan la
Zouch, Lord of the Manor, was granted to Ashby
to hold an annual fair where merchandise could
be sold in the street. Although the reasons for
granting the Charter aren’t clear, it did say that
the citizens “might enjoy themselves merrily” –
and they still do!
Stallholders used to be charged individually for
their pitches by the council but as time went on it
was let to just one showman, Pat Collins. Pat
Collins Funfairs still run the event, under the
present owner Mr. Anthony Harris.
Mr. Harris, over 40 years ago, suggested to the
Lions Club that they run the fair for free, solely
for children and young people with special needs
on the Monday morning. He was later made an
Honorary Lion by the Club for his service to
generations of young people over many years.
He also allows the Lions to have their own fund-
raising stall over the whole period of the fair. A
Centennial Award was made to Mr. Harris last
year, and recently on Sunday morning this year,
following a multi-denominational church service
on the Dodgems (how weird is that?), Mr. and
Mrs. Harris were awarded the Freedom of the
Town of Ashby by the Mayor, a wonderful
acknowledgement of their great contribution to
the town. They are the first ever to be awarded
the Freedom of the town.
This year, as in every year for the past 40 or
years, around 650 children and young people
with a variety of special needs and over 220 of
their carers, from around 20 schools in
Nottingham, Leicester, Sutton Coldfield, Burton-
on-Trent, Shepshed, Swadlincote, Coalville and
Ashby were given free rides and treats.
They enjoyed a morning of thrills and
excitement which many of them would never be
able to access under normal circumstances. It
was quieter and there were less crowds. Rides
were run especially for them, sometimes at
slower speeds, and everyone involved was well-
aware of the children’s needs.
Their excited faces wreathed in smiles were
sufficient reward for everyone who helped. As in
many recent years the day started damp and
dreary, but it didn’t dampen the spirits of the
children or the volunteers and fortunately the
rain cleared!
Invitations went out in May, and from then
until September a committee of Lions worked on
the logistics of entertaining nearly a thousand
people.
Ashby and Coalville Lions paid for treats for the
children, with help from some of our local Clubs,
and Local Businesses such as Tesco and KP
donated water and snacks. Daybreak Stores in
Packington provided fruit, Ivanhoe School
allowed its car park to be used for the morning
and the Lions were helped on the day by sixth
formers from Ashby School as well as some of
our local Rotarians, volunteers from Tesco and
Leicestershire Search and Rescue who provided
medical assistance.
Unfortunately increasing numbers of Health and
Safety regulations are preventing some schools
from coming to our event, but we hope it will
continue for many years to come.

LITTER PICKING THE You Can Leos regularly do a litter pick and
clean up at the Cromwell Community Gardens
and the picture were taken at our last clean up
on the in August.
Unfortunately only Charlotte and Michael
turned up, so it was just the three of us, along
with Lion Marian Daintree of Stretford Lions.
BIRCHWOOD Lions had a great Social
Evening in August.
First off was the presentation of the new
Football Strip to the Birchwood Junior FA
Football team, which was presented by
Lion President Pam Dyson and she was
quite “uplifted” by the event!
Next, we had a visit from local poet and
author, David Horrigan, who recited
several of his poems, including some
highlighting his experiences as a
Warrington Bobby.
David is raising funds for a charity at
Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, a cause
that is close to his heart.
QUITE UPLIFTING!

JOINT COLLECTION ON THE PROMENADE LANCASTER and Morecambe Lions Club and
Volunteers from Cancer Care held a joint
Collection during the August Bank Holiday
weekend at the 7th Annual “Vintage By The
Sea Festival” held at the Midland Hotel on
Morecambe Promenade.
This successful free event once again
welcomed thousands of visitors who despite
the strong winds and showers enjoyed
everything vintage: Music and Dance,
Costumes, Cars, Shows, Stalls and Arts and
Crafts.
Thankfully the sun eventually came out and
visitors made donations in exchange for event
programmes during the Festival.
Cancer Care and the Lions used the
appropriately named "Lions Room" at
Slyndales to count the proceeds and the
generous amount of £1,291 was divided
between the two Organisations.
NEW MINI BUS FOR CENTRE
EVERY year hundreds of thousands of people suffer life- changing brain injuries. They face a long and difficult road to recovery, often with limited support.
Calvert Reconnections, part of the Lake District Calvert Trust, located on the outskirts of Keswick, is a brand-new Neuro-Rehabilitation Residential Centre that will offer ground-breaking rehabilitation programmes for those who have suffered an acquired brain injury (ABI).
The focus will be on delivering clinical therapies alongside experienced activity instructors utilising challenging outdoor activities to support individuals and their recovery from brain injury. This will be combined with making strong connections
with the local community to seek out experimential and vocational opportunities to enable ABI survivors to achieve their true potential. Keswick Lions Club President Diane Cannon said: “We
are delighted to support the Calvert Reconnections Centre. “Our aim was to provide the centre with a specially
equipped minibus. This can be used to transport residents and their teams around Keswick and the area, where they can gain invaluable experiences on their road to recovery”. The Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF)
provides match funding to causes that they judge to be suitable. Keswick Lions pledged £8,000 and approached other local Lions Clubs to support the bid. Windermere and Ambleside Lions pledged £5,000, with Kendal, Grange, Furness and Lancaster and Morecambe pledging smaller amounts. Then began the lengthy process of putting the bid
together. Keswick Lion Ray Sheldon prepared the successful bid application and was delighted to hear that the club had been successful and had been awarded $12,500. A fantastic total of £25,000 will provide a fully kitted out
minibus. “I am personally very proud of the efforts from Keswick Lions to co-ordinate this bid, and to see how Clubs in our District have supported us. I cannot wait to see the minibus in use”. said Lion Diane.

DESPITE atrocious weather the “Walk in the
Park” Event in Keswick went ahead and a good
time was had by those who braved the
conditions.
The event was intended to be a District 105 CN
LCIF Fundraiser and although a number of Clubs
had pledged to take part, but the advance
weather forecast persuaded them otherwise and
they made the correct decision not to travel.
The Paragliding Competition had to be cancelled
due to the forecast of extreme weather
c o n d i t i o n s
wh i ch was
disappointing
for all, but

Paraglide from
the nearby
Latrigg mountain.
Some of the stalls cancelled but in good old
British style, the show went on and it was great
to see many Families come out and brave the
rain.
The Mayor of Keswick Councillor David Burn
turned up along with the Town Crier David Hall
and completed a lap talking to entrants and
stallholders.
The Town Crier showed off his Line Dancing
skills with Clare Bell and her Krazy Kickers and
the C2R Committed to Rock Choir turned out in
force and sang beautifully in the Marquee.
Many young local musicians got drenched
p l a y i n g t h e i r
instruments outside
but still said they
enjoyed the day.
The Booths Gin Bar
and Grapevine said
sales were nothing
like what they would
have been if they had
decent weather.
Martin Davey, a member of The Bert Mason
Internet Club walked 15 laps dressed in his Lion
outfit and raised £215 for the Lions LCIF Charity.
The Renton Family won the best Fancy Dress
group and Mark Stainton won the Best Male with
his Blue Dragon outfit.
Event organiser Lion Alan Dunn said that it’s
too soon to give an accurate total of how much
was raised on the day but it looks as though it
will be over
£9,000 which will
go to The Lions
C l u b s

Foundation of
which Lion Alan is
the 105 CN

ordinator. In addition over
£4,000 was raised
by Alan’s son
John and the
Brown Family for
little Grace Brown
who lost her
f a t h e r Ch r i s
recently in a
tragic Mountain accident. The event could not have taken place without
the main sponsor, local Businessman Lee Watson
of O’Reilly Wealth Management and many local
supporters.
It was a great turnout by
several Members of Keswick
Lions Club, many of whom
spent the whole day
preparing the event and
then clearing up afterwards
in appalling conditions.
The Keswick Scouts
manned the lap marquee
and gave out entrants
stickers at the end of each
lap which exactly covered
one kilometre, a count was made of the number
of kilometres and in total the entrants walked the
equivalent of walking to Calais!
All in all the event was a success thanks to the
generous sponsors and local businesses without
whom the event could not have got off the
ground and LCIF will soon be receiving a very
nice cheque to help with their worldwide causes.
Keswick Lions will
now sit down and
consider whether to
put on another event
next year.

musical experience

Dear Lion Friends
I need your help in finding Young Musicians in Lions District 105 CN. This is an
exciting opportunity for them to take part in a fantastic Music Competition

LIONS 105 CN MUSIC COMPETITION, 2020
DISTRICT GOVERNOR 105 CN LION JOHN
CHAMBERS
THINGS have certainly got
off to a quick start as I
have visited quite a
number of Clubs via Zone
Meetings and a number of
Events.
It was great to see the
fun at Prestatyn and Rhyl
Duck Race despite being
put in the stocks by Past
District Governor Teresa
and Lion President Dee but
they had a successful day
and was enjoyed by all.
The Light Parade at
Llandudno watching 100’s
of Goldwing Bikes parade
through the streets all lit
up with the riders wearing
costumes was quite a sight.
I was also invited to help
start the first round of the
Orme swim which also was
successful in raising
awareness of Breast and
Prostate Cancer and the
events also raised a large
amount of money for the
two good causes.
One of the best moments
this month was to be
invited to Ashby-De-La-
Zouch to see the fair that is
put on in the town which
they organise with the help
of other Clubs in their Zone
to bring 1,000’s of disabled
children to ride on the fair
free of charge.
I have never seen so
many happy faces in one
place. A great achievement
for all those involved.
I know many of you have
lots of events and I am
sorry I couldn’t get to
more. It is great to travel
around and see all the
things you do and I am
happy to come along if
available.
It has also been a busy
time for Charters from one
end of the District to the
other in the same
weekend.
I had the honour to
attend the First Charter of
the new Nantwich Club to
celebrate gaining their new
Charter. A great night was
had by all and then the
following night to celebrate
Bolton’s 50 year’s another
great occasion.
Hopefully, a sign of where
we are and here to stay
and have a great future.
Don’t forget to come and
join us on October 12 in
Llandudno for the “Walk
For Sight”.
I have managed to
arrange it with a visit and
tour of Blind Veterans UK
and lots of new activities
and much more to do
including a light lunch.
On a visit there the other
day they have made great
plans for the visit of 105
CN and it is not to be
missed. To have a chance
to see where all the monies
have been spent and with
talks from Billy Baxter the
fastest “Blind Man” on two
wheels and a chance to
walk through the Sensory
Gardens blindfolded to
experience this new
addition.
It’s that time of year as
well, that we should be
looking at our Youth with
t h e P e a c e P o s t e r
Competitions upon us and
looking forward to seeing
all the entries at our next
Cabinet Meeting.
We also have the Essay
Competition and the Young
Ambassador, so let’s look
around our Communities.
We must have many
youngsters that are doing
good work.
Because of all these
Competitions we do need
to be able to support them,
so please look favourably
at the youth appeal for our
District to enable us to
continue this good work
and if anyone would still
like to sponsor a trophy
there are still a couple of
sponsor’s needed either
personal or Club.
Well, I will be meeting up
with quite a few of you in
the next month as I have
another 12 Charters to go
to and a number of Visits
and please remember to
check your information on
the Forum as it contains all
the information you need
for Charters, Events and
News.
It is easy to sign up and if
you have any problems just
e-mail the Webmaster and
we will help sort your
problem.
A Training Session will be
held in January on this,
along with a number of
other subjects. A full
programme will be printed
soon.
So it’s goodbye from me
for now and I hope to meet
up with you all over the
coming months.

ANNUAL 5k ROAD RACE
IN August, Littleborough and District Lions
organised their annual 5k Road Race.
The race started and finished at the
Littleborough Conservative Club.
Seventy seven runners participated, thirty
four being from the Sowerby Bridge “Snails
Club”.
The ages of the mixed field ranged between
25 and 78 years of age and the finishing times
ranged between 17 minutes 45 seconds and
40 min 53 seconds.
After the prize presentation, many people
stayed and enjoyed a supper of Hot Dogs and
Chilli.
It was an excellent event, raising £376 for
local Charities.
Littleborough and District Lions wish to thank
all those who helped with the Registration and
Route Marshalling.
PICTURED the overall winner, of the race, Philip Hinchcliffe, receiving the Annual Race Trophy and
replica, from local Councillor Janet Emsley. 25-year-old Philip, is a member of Rochdale
