To my Pupils.
Several years ago when I edited the four books of
my method, .. The Theory and Practice of the Violin ", it
Was to you thai [ mentally dedicated that work.
It is not. suff icient , alas, to he g-ifted with the most
precious talents to attain in art the I!;oal of one's desires.
It is neressary, Lao, that the most rare pnysiolog ical qua -
lities he devulopped by a patient and pror;ressi\'e study .First a nd f 'o re rn ns t one must choose a pr oficient master.
Like most of my colleagues to whom advanced violin
instruction has been entrusted, [ am often painfully sur-
prised hy the faults almost incorrigible, contracted by pu-
pils possessing rcmnrk.ahle natural talents but "-110 have
received neither an intelligent nor well conducted prepa -
ratory instruction. If all professors admire in cert ain cele-
hrated artists the hrilliancy of the runs, the connected and
graceful playing, the vivacious manipulation of the left hand
and the perfect suppleness of the right arru.certain of them
seem reluctant to admit that these virtuosos whom they ad-mire, have only acquired these qualities by makinp a clean
sweep of erroneous theories accumulated by a long routine.
Whatever may he the conviction that one entertains
concerning different schools and however important may be
tue legacy transmitted hy our illustrious predecessors, it is
incontestable that the art of playing the violin has spread
and has further progressed during the past few years. The
instrument better held to the shoulder since the chin-rest
has heen perfected and its use generalized, has in part
freed the left hand of a constraint from which but fewes -
caped. A morc rational study of the changes of position
tends to do away with the incorrect use of. the ;:jrd, 51~ and
7* positions, which was detrimental to the intermediary po-
sitions and to a logical fingering and expression.
The repertoire of the violin, considerably augmented
by the addition of new works and the priceless pages of
th e Italian and French masters of the XVJ1[t . ! , century, com-
pleted by works of chamber music, measur ahly increased

Ii,
quate preparation which the pupil cannot find in the ele-
mentary works generally employed. O J
Thus all my efforts have been specially directed to
present the new acquisitions in a clear and progressive
order, so that you may benefit as completely as possible
from the experience which I have been able to acquire af-
ter a long professorship and at a school of the most emi -nent masters.
The study of the model positions of Ille right arm
and left lIand will aid the pu pi! to obtain the correct pos-
ture and permit h is playing to be performed without stiffness,
The rational study of the keys make for the acqui-
sition of exactness by constantly calling the attention of
tbe pupil to the danger of the false fifth.
The exercise for changing strings gi ves to the
playing a connection and equality very difficult to obtain
otherwise,
An unremitting practice of the changes of position
should have for result the release of all constraint of thc
left hand, and making supple the portamento, render this
express! ve and musical.
A logical practice of the positions, established by
a rational accomplishment of the first, demonstrates to the
pupil that he only plays out of tune in C II/a/or in the se-
cond position, because he has not a sufficient knowledge of
the fingering of B Major in the first position (fingering
and difficulty the same).
The practice of the different bow strokes: MtacM (de-
tached), martele (hammered), staccati, spiccati , saut.ille
(jumpin.g), etc., prepares methodically for the transcen -dent difficulties.
By the employment of the various rllthms and tile
irregular bow strokes, 1 have tried also in tbe sr.d and
41~ parts of this work to better prepare the pupil to meet
the difficulties so peculiar and so important to the
chamber music.
Upon the application, more or less judicious, of the
principles which 1 have enumerated, will depend the results
that you may obtain; they will show me whether Or not I
have succeeded in my task.

First Book.
Introduction.
The Solfeggio.
The solfeggio is the foundation of musical education.
It alone can develop the auditory qualities of the pupil
and permit him to engnge all his attention on the mecha-
nism of the fingers "nd of the how.
Natural Aptitudes.
The student who desires to consecrate himself to the
study of the violin, should possess a left hand sui ted to
the instrument, considerable flexibility of both arms and
be able to sot -fa with perfect precision. No amount of
study would be able to completely compensate for the lack
of these natural qun'lificaticas.
Choice of the Instrument."
The teacher should take great care in tbe choice of
an instrument. It should be- exactly in proportion with the
development of the left arm and hand of the pupil. An in--
strument Whose form is too large hut adds to the difficul-
ties of the early studies, prevents the pupil playing with
precision or of acquiring a good posi lion.
Choice of the Bow.
For the beginner, the teacher should choose a light bow
an d above all, one not too long.
First Principles.
The Carriage of the Body.
The carriage of the body should be both natural and
simple; nor can the old style of supporting all the weight of
the body On One leg he reconunended. A foot placed lightly,
a trifle in advance of the body, is sufficient to maintain the
balance.
How to hold the Violin.
The neck of the violin should he supported by the first
Joint of the thumb and the base of the index finger of the
left hand (fig. 6), the instrument placed under the left side
of the chin in a strictly horizontal position. The middle of
the jaw, which rests On the chin-rest, holds the violin, already
maintained in position by the hand and the collar bone(fig.7).
The instrument must not he held flat but inclined
slightly towards the right. To obtain this result a small cu-
shion or handkerchief is placed on the shoulder and the lat-
ter is very slightly raised.
The elbow should be inclined towards the breast.so as
to fall under the centre of the viclin , the back of the hand
heing nearly in a straight line with the forearm and the fin-
gers above the strings held in a rounded position.
Primera cuaderno.
fecta afinacion , Ningim estudio podra reemplazar completamente
no demasiado grande.
Primer os fundamentos,
Posicion general.

How to hold the Bow.
1s.t The bow is held by all the fingers; the tip of the
thumb resting against the nut of the bow should be in line
with the centre of the hand (fig. 8).
2n.d The fingers are placed on the stick in a natural
position. That is to say, neither closed tightly, nor spread
too far apart, nor held stiffly. The stick should pass un -der the second phalange of the index finger and the ti p
of the little fil.lger (fig. 9) . It should be added that the thnml-
must neither be held stiffly nor turned in but slightly
arched (fig. 8) and the extremity of the little finger, resting
on the stick. should maintain the equilibrium in a sure manner.
The Position of the Right Arm.
The arm must always be entirely supple and one should
be careful to see that the elbow be neither raised nor lowered.
Th e arm sbould descend along of the body when the
bow is dr,lwn across the .B or A string (fig. 7) and be
raised a trifle to reach the bass strings, 1) and (}. In tbeo-
ry, the arm should fall verti cally to attain the position in -
dicated by fig. 13 but in practice it is carded a little in
advance/to facilitate the. general carriage and free the po-
sition of the wrist at the nut.
The Position of the Bow
in its Relation to the Strings.
Absolutely and always parallel to the bridge. The
stick very slight/.V inclined towards the fingerboa.rd,so that
the hair may follow the 'slope of the strings.
On drawing tlte bou: towards the point, the back of the
hand should be in a straight line with the forearm when the
bow has been drawn mid -way across the fingerboard; the
wrist at all times controlling the stick (fig. 4). At the head,
on the .A, the elbow should be at the he.ight of the wrist and
the back of the hand inclined as little as possible towards
the forearm (fig. 5).
While pushing the bow towards the nut, raise the wrist
gradually to maintain: 1'\ The bow parallel to the bridge.2n.d, The bair of the bow to the strings.
Position of the Violin.
The position of the violin should vary according to the
build of the violinist. If n e has a long arm, he will hold
the violin towards the len, in order to obtain a position
more free and easy, If his arm is short, he will be obliged
to bring the violin round towards the right, in order tc con-
serve a correct position of the bow at the head; otherwisethe bow will not rest parallel to the bridge, or the violi •
nist will be forced to advance the arm in an exaggerated
manner to obtain that pos iticn.
dentro, sino t.:geramente arqueodQ (filr.8), y In e xtr em id ad

General Observations.
It would take too long to state in detail the reasons
which have caused us to abandon the course followed hy Our
predecessors in thnt which concerns the choice of keys, the
strokes of the how, the changing strings etc., and the rea-
sons which have caused us to adopt our model positions
for the left hand and the right arm. But the teachers who
faithfully go over our course with interest, will see that Our
aim is to present the difficulties one by one and to require
of the pupil only tkat whick k~ is able to do weU.In the study of the violin, the beginning only is thank -
less, To the difficulty of the position, very awkward to
achieve at first, is to be added the difficulty of acquiring-
precision and tone. The pupil must also Jearn the neces -
sity of going slowly at first, .i f one day he would acquire
a sure technique.
A ~ood carrial-:'e is of primordial importance.Throngn-
out a career one is often conscious of the faults required
at lhe start. It is therefore necessary from the first lessons
to exact of the pupil all the attention possihle on this point.
It will be expedient to have the beg-inner execute tbe
movements of the arm and of the wrist represented by figs.
10 and 11 before he places tim bow on the strings. Should
the weight 01 the bow prevent him bending and stretching
out the hand with facili Iy , the pupil could, for the first les-son, use a bow of lesser weight.
It is indispensable that the pupil hold the Violin and
bow without too much difficulty before commencing the prac-
tice of the exercises,
Exper ience has demonstrated to us that one cannot ex-
pect a beginner to combine the vigor of tone with supple -
ness of play. He will acquire by degrees the two qualities
so indispensable One to the other.
On commencing, he should play the first book in a na-
tural tOM; that is to say, neither forte nor piano. The
weight of the bow and a light pressure of the index finger
should suffice to maintain the hair on the strings. In this
way all the joints will guard the desired flexibility.
It is neither necessary nor desirable that the pupil em-
ploy at the start, the extreme point or nut of the bow, but
each movement must be executed with great suppleness.
Observecienes generales.

Una buena posicion tiene una impor tancia primordial;

Before commencing- the study of the manupulation of the

Popular Melodies. Cantos populares.
Popular melodies develop the musical taste of
the pupil without the slightest effort on his part. Thus
we strongly recommend that one combine witb the study
of this method, the pieces contained in the collection" Me.
lodies and Selections ", which is the musical complement of
this work.

Changing Strings.
No study is treated with more indifference than this one
Numerous methods entirely overlook it. Nevertheless it is abo
solutely necessary that the pupil attaches a distinct impor -
tance to it.The position of the arm remains nearly the same on
the A and D string-s. The change of strings must be made
with the wrist and cous idernble practice will tend to achieve
this with a minimum displacement.

in a too vertical position. To avoid this fault, he will lake
care that the violin is not inclined too much towards the
right and he will practice the following exercises, so as to
achieve the changes of position with a minimum of displace-
ment.
Del mecanismo del arco.(H cuerda.)

Only alter several months of study will the pupil ob-
tain a satisfactory position of the left arm and hand and be
ahle , without effort, to place the fingers on the fourth string
in a good position.
It is absolutely necessary that the student accustom
himself to play on the four strings without modifying the
position of the left arm; the little finger must fall on the
41h~ng while maintaining,at all times, an arched position.
