Female Genital Mutilation (a form of circumcision) is classified into four major types – Clitoridectomy, Excision, Infibulation, and other forms. Clitoridectomy is partial or total removal of the clitoris (a small, sensitive and erectile part of the female genitals) and, in very rare cases, only the prepuce (the fold of skin surrounding the clitoris). Excision is partial or total removal of the clitoris and the labia minora, with or without excision of the labia majora (the labia are "the lips" that surround the vagina). Infibulation is narrowing of the vaginal opening through the creation of a covering seal. The seal is formed by cutting and repositioning the inner, or outer, labia, with or without removal of the clitoris. Other form includes all other harmful procedures to the female genitalia for non-medical purposes, e.g. pricking, piercing, incising, scraping and cauterizing the genital area.

Nepal an adolescent girl is menstruating. She is banished from her home to an isolated hut where she will remain until her bleeding has ended. For days she sleeps in the cold and without food. She is experiencing the chhaupadi, a centuries old ritual practice in Nepal that considers girls and women “unpure” while they are menstruating.

A mother irons her daughter’s breasts in Cameroon. She is attempting to shield her from male attention. The smaller her boobs, the less appealing to men and the less likely she will get pregnant before finishing school.

Mauritania a woman is force fed, locally known as gavage. Overweight women are more attractive to Mauritanian men. Thus girls, starting from a very young age, are forced to over-eat in order to gain weight.

“Shaima Alawadi, a 32-year-old Iraqi-American, was brutally attacked in her home in El Cajon¸ California, on March 21. She was found unconscious by her eldest daughter, with a note placed by her beaten body stating, “Go back to your country, you terrorist.” Alawadi succumbed to her injuries and passed away on Saturday. Alawadi is survived by her five children.”

Malala Yousufzai got on the bus on Tuesday morning to go to school. With her, were two of her school friends, also bound for Mingora, the largest town in Pakistan’s Swat District, where their school is located. It was an ill-fated journey. Before the girls could get to school that morning, Tehreek-e-Taliban gunmen accosted the bus.One of the girls, Shazia Razaman confirmed that they were specifically looking for Malala. She was easy to find, and when they did find her, they shot her in the head.

Women are facing a lot of difficulties around the world. Women who get the opportunity for education should go for it no matter what. Women shouldn’t stay weak and remain silent in front of their abusive husbands; they should report them to the police whether it is a husband, a boyfriend, or even a father.Self-defense classes are to be taken into consideration for women. Know your rights and fight for it. As a women you should earn your respect, and they way you dress plays a huge role in how you portray yourself and how you want men to look at you.
